Lee Epstein is Ethan A.H. Shepley Distinguished University Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Kartik Hosanagar is the John C. Hower Professor of Technology and Digital Business and a professor of marketing at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The co-founder of four different ventures, he was recognized in 2011 by Poets & Quants as one of the "Top 40 Business Professors Under 40." His writing has appeared in Wired, Forbes, and the Harvard Business Review, and his past consulting and executive education clients include Google, American Express, Citigroup and SunTrust Bank. The machine was invented by Hungarian inventor Wolfgang Kempelen in 1770, and inside its array of clanking gears, levers, pulleys and mechanisms - was intelligence. Which brings me to this important book written by Kartik Hosanagar.Professor Hosanagar’s book, “A Human’s Guide To Machine Intelligence,” provides an eloquent overview and simplified explanation on the impact algorithms and AI are having on our lives. It’s an important book for a few reasons. As Hosanagar points out, algorithms are already commonly occurring and are having a real impact on many lives, and their applications are dramatically increasing. Already Machine Learning and AI are having a significant influence (currently approximately 33% of purchases on Amazon and 80% of recommendations on Netflix are influenced by algorithms) and the applications for Machine Learning and AI are increasing dramatically. The topic in general is all too often ignored by many people as being too complicated or difficult to understand. In his book, Hosanagar successfully educates and informs the reader by demystifying the buzzwords and technology (an algorithm is simply instruction, “like a recipe for an omelette”), and provides insights concerning what new AI applications are coming in the near future. Concurrent with these new tools, he describes suggestions as to how we can best manage them.As for Benjamin Franklin’s chess loss, it was discovered years later that the chess playing machine was a hoax, and in fact had a concealed human chess master hiding inside the mechanical housing! Read Hosanagar’s book and learn how algorithms are still influenced by humans (although there’s no one physically hiding inside) and how we can stay in control.

A very easy read that will help everyone get caught up on the state of the art of Artificial Intelligence, how we got here and the path that lies ahead. Through out the book there were anecdotes and examples from history and living memory that were really fun to learn about. The last part of the book was very thought provoking in terms of describing the crossroads we are at with AI as a society and the opportunities that lie ahead!

An accessible yet ambitious survey of the algorithm landscape. The author not only elucidates the technical concepts involved but also the social impact at stake. The writing is crisp and the topics are covered in detail without being intimidating to outsiders.

This book is very informative and fun.

Prof. Hosanagar does a great job at explaining the way algorithms impact our lives today by providing good details into the way the algorithms are designed by companies such as Netflix and Spotify. The first half of the book is a very easy read and paves the way for extremely interesting discussion questions such as what degree of transparency should companies provide to their customers on the algorithms at play as well as a proposal for an Algorithmic Bill of rights, which I personally liked a lot. I finished the book with a set of actionable insights into thinking about implications of these algorithms, both as a customer as well as someone who is involved in creating good experiences in the tech industry. I also liked some of the personal experiences described by Prof. Hosanagar in the book, especially his own research in the space, and through examples of companies he has advised/worked with in the past.Highly recommend the book!

The reviews I read cast a better light on this story than I thought it deserved. Loving this genre of story I found this book very shallow. There were many times the author could have written deeper more compelling story line. Very predictable.

At the end of PRESIDENTIAL SHIFT, the President called Cal and told him to watch his press conference. He gave a speech, then promptly resigned, naming VP Brandon Zimmer as the new President — it was a move nobody expected. President Zimmer faces threats from home and abroad during his first weeks in office. Will he hold out or give in?President Zimmer chooses an interesting Chief of Staff and picks an even more interesting Vice President (I am not sure I am happy with one of the career changes)... The SSI team works to "stop a plot to manipulate the stock market and the country's economy"...The fifth book in the Corp Justice series is different as in there is less shoot 'em up action than in previous books, but that is not a bad thing. Much of the story took place in Washington DC; there were plenty of shifty politicians with grandiose ideas and greedy plans to become richer and more powerful. Then there are the patriots who will do whatever it takes to protect America and her people. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep things interesting. The biggest shock to me was the Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot ending! I cannot wait to get started on LETHAL MISCONDUCT!

This Book again is full of suspense,and just when you think at some point these book have to get boring,they don't.They somehow get more interesting,the more you read.In the first 4 book,Characters get introduced,starting in this book you pretty much know the players.You don't have to read them in order,because each one is a stand alone story,and the author will explain who's who in each book.I suggest reading them in order.Something strange happened when i got to the end of this book.the author offered a free book of and Corps To Justice series,so I emailed him.The next day on my Kindle I had the Manuscript of book 6.Two days later I bought book 7.Like I said they are like Crack for your eyes..I hope you enjoy them the way I am. I'm sure when I get done with the last book in the series,book 10,I'll be heartbroken.

I've been hooked since reading the first in CG Cooper's impressive list of novels and stories.This one is fascinating, as a relative newbie to national politics has risen faster than he might have, to become POTUS. Having had a father who betrayed his oath of office, and having been appointed to VP, he now finds himself embroiled in intrigue and politics, as unusual.While I'd love to believe that what happens in Washington is not nearly as convoluted as this novel, I hate to admit that it probably is much worse than it appears to us on the outside.Cooper is masterful at character development and plot development, and shows he keeps on growing as he continues writing.As others have written in reviews, I'm not sure I like Travis' new position and his leaving the group behind. I'm also not convinced that The Hammer is where she's supposed to be.And having Cal become CEO and now spending his time running the place is almost too much. What an excellent way to be reminded that those who run this country have damaged integrity. It is not too difficult to relate to the author's portrayal of the character of those in power of our country today. By what we read in the news and see on television, the revealing flawed personalities are an insult to what our country has always held in higher esteem. So, what I am saying is that as a citizen of America, this story had me cheering for the guys who fought the good fight to overcome the evil intent of the adversaries. The cliff is high and to fall from it will surely take its toll on those who choose the crooked path. I love the ex-marine characters banter as they go about the high-risk job of protecting their country and the president.This is a fast moving, action packed thriller. The tense scenes really found me holding my breath while they played out, only to breathe a sigh of relief when it all came together and then moved on at an even faster pace. There are surprises and clever twists in the storyline. I liked this novel and would recommend it with great enthusiasm.

While it has some good points and good references in the back I don't think that this will be your last book to help you run your small business. Accounting unfortunately is not anything you could cover in a book with less than 50 pages. There are just so many variables and nuances that will differ from business to business. The book has lots of good information if you are not familiar with different accounting processes. In chapter one, he discusses the importance of assets, liability and equity. Chapter two discusses business transactions and the accounting cycle. In chapter 3 discusses financial statements. In this chapter you get a brief discussion on the different types of financial statements.In chapter 4 discusses Fraud and Ethics when you are into accounting. Chapter 5 is probably the most important of all the chapters to me. This chapter has so much inforamtion about what is called the GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). The terms discussed are the Four Principles and the roles of each and the Four Accounting Assumptions. In the last chapter 6 raps up using the software to building your business and using accounting to run it. I received this product for a discount rate in exchange for my honest review. This however has not influenced my opinion. As an online shopper I know how important these reviews are in helping someone decide whether or not to buy a product. I wanted to learn more about accounting and came accross this book.Unfortunately is not what I've expected.I expected something that could teach me from scratch and help me understand how accounting works. This book did not help me too much because it has a lot of technical terms which I do not understand. It's not a bad book but too technical.

This book was a huge help in understanding basic accounting functions for my small business. I am a new small business owner and accounting is still one of the things that I am trying to read up on. This book did a really good job of breaking down some of the more complicated aspects that come along with accounting. The examples that were given were simplified in a way that a beginner, such as myself, can understand what is being explained. It also did a very nice job of giving definitions of all the different phrases that are commonly used with accounting. There are still some things that I need to look into that I did not fully understand, but overall this guide really helped to give me a leg up in starting my business. I would also like to mention that I received this eBook for free.

Being a CPA I understand the importance understanding accounting is to the success of most small business. I have heard of stories that business owners were so proud of how much they sold of there most popular product, but could understand why they weren't making as much money as they thought. Turns out when the product was reviewed by another professional considering all the costs that went into making it the business was actually losing money on their must popular product :(This book provides the basic small business owners should understand to manage their company. Accounting isn't something to be intimidated, by it something that once learn, can help your business expand and grow into new markets. The book doesn't involve any of the complexities of accounting that could confuse individuals. Which is good since the complexity is not needed at a small business level.Although I am a CPA I do recommend accounting books to my friends who currently cant afford the services of an accountant. Excellent book for tourists and those who wish to explore Guyana. It's detailed with alot of information about where to visit, history, where to eat, where to stay and much more. I've found it useful on my journeys throughout this region. Highly recommended.

I purchased this specific travel guide in preparation for a trip to Georgetown this summer (2008). I found it to be both educational, timely (January 2008 copyright date),authentic and insightful from the author's personal narrative and perspective about this unique South American country. I also wanted to add some of the perceived "typos" mentioned by the previous reviewer are possibly not really typos for those of British or European backgrounds, I believe it is how they form and spell specific word patterns in their country, for example...realised (European) in the USA is spelled "realized" or enquiry (European) in USA is spelled "inquiry"Callie Wilder

If you are going to Guyana, get this book.When you get to Guyana relax over a cappuccino and enjoy the lunch buffet at the Oasis, then get out of Georgetown and get into the interior. (Don't forget to bring steel leader if you plan on fishing, the piranha bite through regular leader like it wasn't even there).

This is the first Bradt travel guide I have purchased and the standard is excellent, Better than any other travel guide I have purchsed for any other country. The author writes very well, has actually lived in the place, and has taken the trouble to visit just about everywhere he describes. I purchased separately a map by another publisher and it was lousy and a waste of money. The maps in the Bradt guide are excellent and show every single place you might want to visit. A travel guide for Guyana can hardly be a great commercial proposition and Bradt are to be congratulated for taking such a brave decision.

This is a great book because it covers the history, tradition, food, biodiversity, among other things from Guyana. It is illustrated with maps, photographs and drawings. I liked this book because I am planning on traveling to Guyana and this guide helped me plan my trip. It even has a section with drawings for animal tracks that you might see in the forest. I recommend it

Just got back from Guyana, a broken country. Used Kirk's guide book, excellent coverage, but too charitable/not realistic enough about the country. Georgetown is a dump, but the guide dodges around this fact. This book was written in '07, but it doesn't seem much has changed in the last 4 years. (I notice an '011 edition is just out, btb.) Pretty indicative of the progress, or lack thereof, in this country.A few quibbles. If you go to Guyana, bring binoculars! Nowhere does Kirk mention this. Also, no advice at all on tipping. It would have been useful. And finally, I really don't know why the Canopy Walkway is so highly rated. Practically a waste of time. A stay at the IwoKrama Field Station is a thousand times better, as well as a stay at Rockview. Skip the canopy walkway unless that is going to be your only time in the rain forest.

This is the first guidebook that treats Guyana separately as a country, and is very well researched. There is no contest between this and other guidebooks -- the level of detail and coverage of the country is unmatched when compared to the Lonely Planet's "South America on a Shoestring", the only other guidebook I know that covers Guyana well.This book is a must have for anyone visiting or moving to Guyana. My only gripe with the book is that there is the occasional typo that can be annoying.
