Having read all of the "Trawler Trash" books over the years (and loved every one of them), this change of pace was (for me) a little disconcerting. If I'd read the book independently of the authors' previous sea yarns I probably would have related to it more. Meade Breeze's salty dog character has embedded himself in my psyche so deeply over the past 11 books, I found it hard to relate to him becoming a "landlubber". I think that is a testament to the depth of character Ed Robinson has written into his anti hero, and possibly more about me not wanting him to change. However, Ed Robinson is a top notch story teller and Meade Breeze is a likeable rogue. Many authors would have ended the Trawler Trash books and started the new storyline with a new character. A bold move, Mr Robinson, one I sincerely hope will play out as successfully as Meade's Mountain Man character develops. If the author has faith in his "tree change" character I will persist with the author's new storyline, after so many good books, how could I not?
I can’t say I was thrilled with the Character’s move from boat bum to the mountains but was looking forward to something new. The story just didn’t cut it. Popcorn Sutton’s son? Why? What did that add? Then we’re supposed to believe that a guy ups and kills him for a few thousand dollars in pot plants? Why not just steal them from him? The whole story was just unbelievable. Most of the book was about us trying to believe that Breeze is now one w the mountain like he was one with his boat. Eh. Big deal. This book just didn’t do it for me but I’ll probably read at least one more and hope for better.
This is more of my experience with this area than it is a review. My husband & I have twin sons who are seniors at LMC so we have fallen in love with this area of NC for the last 4 years and my husband wants to move there so very badly. We were recently there to watch our sons run one of their last XC meets and as we were driving by the destroyed tents of the Wooly Worm Festival (thanks to high winds) this book came up on my FB feed! I'm looking forward to the next book, and I do like that it's fast-paced, to see what places you'll include that we've been to or hiked. There are a many great places to hide a body if one needed to-LOL (I read a lot of mysteries & thrillers).
Over the many books in the Trawler Trash series, I came to appreciate Ed Robinson's creativity and writing skills .... not to mention my envy at Breeze's lifestyle and general approach to life. The change of space and change of pace in his life - and that of his partner Brody - has taken me aback. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed their foray on the mountain in South Carolina and look forward to new developments. Yes, I will stick with the new series.
I enjoyed Banner Elk Breeze very much. The buildup to the ending was well done. The ending was great. I like Brody. Normally, when the hero has a significant other, she tends to get in the way and interfere with the rhythm of the story, but Brody is okay. The dialogue at the end between Breeze and Brody was perfectly written. I am looking forward the next adventure of Mountain Breeze.
From the Florida Gulf to the Mountains of NC, Breeze still rules. His character gets stronger and more defined with each book. While I hated to see Mr Robinson leave the Florida and Caribbean waters, I thoroughly enjoyed how Breeze adapted to new “terrain†without sacrificing the story. Hey, maybe Breeze will even enjoy trout fishing over tarpon...Nahhhhhhh
I've always enjoyed Ed Robinsons style of writing. Getting to know his characters as if they were "friends" of mine makes the "read" go by quickly. I'm already looking forward to the next "Mountain Breeze" book.
Great story, new location but you helped us make the transition too. Breeze and Brody and their adventures are captivating and never disappoint. Well done, looking forward to the next adventure from our new mountain man and his lady.
