Hartley is a venture capitalist who in the past has worked for Google and Facebook, been a Presidential Innovation Fellow at the White House and worked at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. His goal in this interesting and generally well researched book is not to show that being educated a fuzzy (majoring in college the humanities or social sciences) is better than being educated a techie (the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math). Rather, for technology to work optimally, the two approaches, techie and fuzzy, need to be blended. That also means that in the foreseeable future, there are, and will be, jobs for fuzzies as well as techies, and not just as barristas at Starbuck’s or behind the counter at McDonald’s. There are illuminating passages that illustrate just where and how fuzzies can fit into an increasingly technologized business environment. Thus, Harvard psychologist Joshua Greene, in an article on driverless cars and the challenges they pose to design, writes that machine decision-making “is more philosophical than technical. Before we can put our values into machines, we have to figure out how to make our values clear and consistent.” Shyam Sankar, director of Palantir Technologies, a $20 billion firm that designs analytics platforms for security and police work, states that human intelligence is essential to stay ahead of the curve: “Terrorists are always adapting… Computers don’t detect novel patterns and new behaviors. Humans do.” What do fuzzies bring to this world? Hartley emphasizes flexibility, breadth versus depth and the ability to bridge disciplines (especially important today), ethical orientation. He stresses too that many of the ‘soft’ disciplines do in practice train students in intellectually sophisticated mathematical and statistical analysis, or, conversely, in rigorous ‘philosophical’ thinking. Lastly, machines are built to serve humans, and human needs, and humankind has problems of its own which technology can help to solve (or at least abate). Here too, people need to collaborate across disciplines to address complicated, human-centric design and sales problems. Hartley roams wide in topics discussed and examples cited. If occasionally, he veers over into boosterism, he deserves to be cut slack because, over all, this is a worthwhile and eminently readable book on a topic that should be of interest to all of us.

Scott Hartley's soft and informative touch on a topic that affects us all is great. He constantly references organizations, people, and events that bring evidence to his claims. I appreciate that his insight is backed by a world perspective. As a fuzzy that is constantly questioning if I am living in the wrong century, Scott gives me a sense of ease knowing that a balance must be maintained for society to thrive."As "software eats the world," technology requires input and expertise from every corner of society. We need more techies in traditionally fuzzy institutions such as our government, and we need more fuzzies building tech companies. Our technology ought to augment rather than replace, and ought to provide us with great hope rather than great fear."

As a techie who has obsessed, worried, and generally just been quite skeptical over the chance non-techies have in surviving the potential automation explosion that could soon come, I found myself relieved to FINALLY find such a convincing argument that the future may be bright after all for both "fuzzies" and techies alike. Prior to reading this, I had come across the Oxford study (that is also discussed in the book) which estimated some 47% of jobs would be automated in the next one to two decades. This study initially rang true to my intuition, as I had been involved in programming several products which were responsible for automating away many manual, repetitive jobs. Having done these jobs, I really couldn't see any end in sight to the potential automation wave that could really create a dire future for any non-techies.But, Hartley presents many studies in the book which contradict these findings - the most prominent of which I found to be the Mckinsey study -which states the number is probably closer to about 5%. More importantly, though, throughout the book he gives several explanatory models explaining WHY many jobs will survive automation, as well as why many "fuzzy" jobs will need to be created and even why these fuzzy jobs will be complex, high skilled and high value jobs. These models further *qualitatively* distinguish what jobs are ripe for automation, and what jobs (or potential jobs) are best served by "fuzzy" skills. The core concept that governs these models is complexity. By looking at a given job, these models highlight both the *magnitude* of complexity, as well as the *type* of complexity. For example, Hartley uses the Cynefin framework to distinguish between tasks that are simple, complicated, complex, chaotic, or disordered. Each of these categories are governed by the structure of the cause and effect relationships which dictate the required action of the person (or job/role) in effectively carrying out a required task. I found models like this to give me an incredibly simple and useful way for organizing and making sense of this topic, where previously I could feel myself floundering to pull together the essential governing laws of the debate.Besides this, the book is filled with a really nice blend of hard data and entertaining stories, that allows for a convincing argument in an entertaining way. I had one or two disagreements, where I thought the role of a "fuzzie" was slightly over-exaggerated - or at the very least was likely to be more valuable supplementally rather than critically. But, on the whole, I found myself mostly nodding in agreement with my own experience, where I have personally found many of the tech claims - especially those involving machine learning, AI, neural nets, etc - to be highly over-exaggerated, as well as the many times in my own work-life experience I have seen just how invaluable fuzzies can be in the right domains. The one benefit I did not expect to get from this book was just how much it could help me to not only appreciate more what "fuzzies" do in the current workplace, but also how to help and support their future in the workplace as we create more meaningful, cooperative, and fun environments where more people feel valued and important in these collective, creative engagements (that we so boringly call jobs) as we humans march forward into the totally unknown and exciting future that lays ahead of us

Look. First, I wanna make some things clear.1. Yes, I know this is ANOTHER remake.2. Yes, Im aware it's been like 10 months3. No, I'm not some 10 year old trying to defend my favourite author.4. No, I don't hate STNNow that that all's out of the way...First off, is the war still on? No, no it isn't (I hope) So if you're a 10 year old trying to start one, screw off.Second off, did you ever try writing a book before? You think writing a book is EASY? If so go write one yourself and see how long it takes for you to write something half good. It doesn't mean I like it that CK's books are slow but for Notch's sake stop complaining!Third off, this is a review section. Don't give CK (or anyone) 1 star cuz "STN is better" or "this book is late (see also:second off)"Also, saying CK or STN copying each other because of "classes" is like saying every game with classes is copying d&d so please shut up.Remake or not, this is good book. But like many others I just wish CK is a bit faster. -Fireblaster3147(Blaze)

all the nether kitten books in one alredy read those but i liked all the artwork. ive always been to shy to write a review but ive been reading youre books since it started. also that j guy is stupid because you clearly explaned that not only you started making books first but was just going to add classes later. i would give this book 100000 stars and not -10000 like that dumb j guy. Also could you make a minor or normal charachter named jace and he has red hair and wears a green cloak and is an enchanter like rubiana and is freindley you can add anything else to him. I would like it if you would add this charachter to any book if you want or you could just not add him to any book at all i am not picky. I still respect STN but can people not fight about whose book is better and who's isn't . I cant wait until the next book comes out. You're my favorite mincraft author. Peace out!

First, I gave up on diary of Steve The Noob Then, I gave up on books kid. Please do not let me give up on you! (p.s. If the reviewer says dennis it is just that I'm using his account I'm actullay a 8 year old girl.)

This was a very nice book. It was pretty much all the nether kitten books combined into one with new, awesome artwork. I am very happy that I got included in this book. Lastly I am wondering when will the new runt book come out?Have a nice day!Lazygiraffe

Our 8 year old loves this series, it has helped encourage his love for reading!

My son, age 9 and 6 love this book. He will re-read these books over and over again. They love this author. He can't wait for the next one.

woohoo cube is back we missed you man where you beenenjoyed the book and uh question you play fortnite xD?and uh cheese burger

This book is Minecraft fan fiction, which definitely has an audience. I have 8 year old and 6 year old sons and we have listened to the audiobook for “Diary of a Minecraft Alex—Ocelot Adventure”, “Diary of a Dork Steve”, and “Diary of a Zombie Steve”. They are by different authors (I think, it’s hard to tell with the pen names) so I knew what I was in for with these books. I wouldn’t think that kids would find these books interesting, but my active boys listened to the audiobooks silently during the entire time (usually running 1-1.5 hours). If you aren’t familiar with Minecraft you probably won’t like this book and it might not make any sense to you. This is the story of a kitten in a Minecraft world who is playing with his friends one day and gets separated. His mother has warned him about staying away from a purple light, if he ever comes across it (a portal to the Nether), but he thinks she just doesn’t want him to have fun. When he finds himself chased through the portal to escape a pack of wolves, everything changes. His appearance changes, he makes new friends, and learns about a war about to begin. There begins his adventure. This book was good, but a little longer and more complicated than I’m used to in this field. The plot was a little confusing and I think it would lose younger readers. There’s a prophecy, a war, strange creatures, and I think it is a little hard for young readers to keep track of. I think this would be best for readers in grades 1-4. There are cool Minecraft-style illustrations on about every other page and the font size changes to stress certain words, which is good for drawing in young readers.Special thanks to Netgalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest opinion.

This book will not persuade all Christians to support liberalized immigration laws, but even the skeptical should find the authors' approach useful."--Tony Carnes, Christianity Today, May 2009"Soerens and Hwang have injected justice, compassion, and truth into what needs to become a new conversation on immigration--values that are often in short supply in this debate."--Glen Peterson, Sojourners, June 2009"A daring and desperate call to remember the story of God that begins with baby Moses being floated down a river in the middle of Pharaoh's genocide and climaxes with God's Son entering the world as a homeless refugee in the middle of Herod's bloodshed. It is a story of immigrants and strangers. This book invites us to participate in the radical inclusion and grace of God. Welcoming the Stranger is written with the urgent sense that we cannot wait for politicians to tell us how to treat immigrants but we simply need to pick up the Bible and reimagine what it means to be the people of God. Here is a reminder that as a people of rebirth our love does not stop at the borders of nations."--Shane Claiborne, author, activist and recovering sinner"Immigration stands as the metric of whether or not America embraces social justice in the twenty-first century. In Welcoming the Stranger Jenny Hwang and Matt Soerens contextualize the narrative of an issue that requires analysis and discussion not from the extremes of political ideology but rather from a platform of truth, justice and compassion. Jenny and Matt equip us with the necessary acumen to reconcile Romans 13, the rule of law, with Leviticus 19, treating the alien as one of our own. Accordingly, the universal Christian symbol is the cross. The cross is both vertical and horizontal, redemption and transformation, conviction and compassion. This book will challenge us to meet at the point of convergence, the great intersect, where John 3:16 meets Luke 4, immigration via a biblical worldview."--Reverend Samuel Rodriguez, president, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, The Hispanic NAE"Drawing from their experience in the trenches, Soerens and Hwang challenge their readers to move beyond the all-too-contentious and simplistic debate and think critically and biblically about what it means to love our immigrant neighbors. Clearly written and theologically informed, Welcoming the Stranger combines evocative stories of real people and the complexities of their lives with lucid explanations of immigration policy. Soerens and Hwang's book offers balanced yet impassioned analysis that is so rare but so essential to help Christians bring their faith to bear on this vexing policy issue."--Amy E. Black, associate professor of political science, Wheaton College, author, Beyond Left and Right"Here is a book for every Christian and every church leadership team interested in one of the greatest mercy/justice issues of our time: how will the church care for immigrants in our midst? The authors write with sensitivity concerning the volatile emotions on all sides of the debates as they offer essential information designed to help us formulate responses to this very complex issue. Welcoming the Stranger inspired me to expand my heart of compassion and take action."--Paul Borthwick, adjunct professor of missions, Gordon College, Wenham, Massachusetts"Thinking of immigration policy requires that we think first about the kingdom of God--God's rule and reign; his plan, will, agenda and story. Only then will we be able to think well through the secondary lenses of nation-states, tribes and ethnicities. The parable of the good Samaritan, while easy to understand, has fallen victim to global, political and economic complexities. Welcoming the Stranger, without being simplistic, clears our thoughts and lights a way forward to love and serve twelve million undocumented neighbors."--Todd Hunter, church planter, The Anglican Mission in the Americas, past president of Alpha USA and Vineyard Churches USA, and author of Christianity Beyond Belief"Finally, a book on the immigration challenge that combines head and heart! Soerens and Hwang have experienced both the frustrations and the hopes that come with caring about people in difficult circumstances. This book is deeply personal in a way that helps us all be compassionate, yet it does not dumb down the challenge we all face with our natural propensity for shallow platitudes and partisan politicking. This book helps us find our way as Americans and as Christians to understanding the real issues, and it will help us shape a comprehensive public policy direction that honors both law and love."--Dr. Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor, Northland Church, Orlando, Florida

It is a historical, current, biblical and theological resource for the person who is trying to understand immigration issues today." (Reverend Luis Cortés Jr., president, Esperanza USA)"Welcoming the Stranger is a must-read for one who desires to take a fresh biblical look at the issue of immigration in the U.S. I believe this is the compassion and justice issue of our day, and we need to do careful work so we are accurate and biblical in our solutions. I wholeheartedly endorse Jenny and Matt's wonderful work and commend it to you for your study." (William J. Welcoming the Stranger provides all three with comprehensive information on every aspect of the current problem, its roots and commonsense solutions. Every Christian seeking an informed response to this critical issue should read this book." (Jim Wallis, president, Sojourners)"Immigration is one of the most pressing issues facing our country today. Some twelve million undocumented immigrants live among us, but their lives are largely in the shadows. They are our neighbors and we are theirs. The ethical challenges that face us all are numerous in the legal, economic, educational and health areas. What would God have us do regarding these new neighbors? Matthew Soerens and Jenny Hwang have made an invaluable contribution to Christians through their book Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion and Truth in the Immigration Debate. With great precision and fairness, they lead us through the difficult and thorny ethical issues of immigration. They provide personal stories and abundant statistics. Most of all, they bring God's Word to challenge us to obey God and to welcome the strangers among us. This book is must-reading for every Christian and every congregation that desires to love the strangers in our midst." Several years ago I had the pleasure of attending a conference where Matthew Soerens was one of the speakers. ‘Welcoming the Stranger” a book Matt co-authored with Jenny Yang, was one of the items that I later bought and enjoyed. It should seem pretty obvious that since I was attending a conference where he was one of the speakers, that we have several common interests. Since then we’ve been in contact a couple of times, usually in the context of how I as a Christian, a pastor, and a concerned citizen could be more involved, or more of an advocate for welcoming the stranger. All of that to say that when I saw that Matt and Jenny were working on Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion & Truth in the Immigration Debate (Revised and Expanded) (IVP Books, 2018) I reached out to ask if there was much difference. A lot has happened in the years since the book was first published in 2009, so yes, there is a lot of new information. This book will not appeal to everyone. Some people don’t want anything to do with immigrants and refugees, and don’t want them in this country. Others just won’t like the writing style. Too many statistics and not enough funny pictures. But for those who care about the people whom Jesus loves, this is a book well worth reading. Unless your ancestors were in this country 600 years ago, you come from an immigrant family. And yes your ancestors may have immigrated legally—back in the day when arrival at Ellis Island was about as legal as it got. But things change and for a few decades now there have been laws, more laws, and stricter immigration laws passed. Some were passed out of fear, some probably out of prejudice (which might just be another word for fear) and some out of greed, or under the pretense of national security. And even though we might break some laws ourselves, there are people who insist that certain laws be enforced. And by the way for those of you who think that anyone wanting to come here legally should just stand in line and wait their turn, there aren’t a whole lot of lines to stand in. Soerens and Yang do an excellent job of pointing out some of the immigration myths making the rounds, and a better job of debunking those myths. They address the policies and politics of both sides of the debate; something I am very happy with, because so much of what we hear from the media is emotional rhetoric, with participants on both sides shouting so loudly that they can’t hear what the other side is saying—even if they were disposed to listen. Immigration impacts so many facets of our society that it’s easy to see why people get so emotional. This book can certainly help anyone interested in toning down the rhetoric and making informed decisions. Did you know that a large number of people who are undocumented today are 1) not Hispanic or Mexican, and 2) actually came here legally but stayed after their student, tourist, or work visa expired. Does that possibly make a difference in how you see the situation? Speaking as an evangelical, and as a pastor, I was extremely pleased to see a couple of chapters where the main points concerned immigration and the church, and also information geared towards helping people make not only an informed response, but also the scriptural background so that we can offer a Christian Response to the issue that seems to be one of the most highly debated of the decade. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to skip the rhetoric and make informed decisions based on facts rather than scare tactics. And besides, as Leith Anderson, President of the National Association of Evangelicals, writes in the Foreword:“A New York Rabbi taught me a lesson I had never before heard. He said that there is no Old Testament commandment to love your parents, husband, wife, or children. There are only three commands: to love the Lord your God, love your neighbor, and love the alien in the land. Deuteronomy 10:19 gives this third commandment to love and explains why: you were once aliens yourselves.” If I thought some of the people in Washington DC would take the time to read the book, I’d buy a case and send them to our national leaders. Kudos to the authors for the effort they’ve put into consolidating information that every American should have access to before formulating their opinion on the subject of immigration. Definitely a 5/5

I didn't know what I didn't know about immigration in America. Lots of historical and factual references that are just eye-opening. This book really turned my understanding of immigration on its head, and I needed that! It also opened my eyes on the Biblical stories and mandates about immigration/aliens. Growing up in the church, how did I miss all the stories about welcoming the stranger all over the OT and NT? Was I not listening, was it not being preached? I'll never be able to go back and find out, but I see it now in the finger-prints of so many Biblical stories.

I read and appreciated the first edition but it was prior to my own experience of welcoming refugees. For anyone who wants an understanding of the biblical perspective on welcome, the US immigration history and present policy as well as accounts of immigrants, documented or not, this is a helpful resource. Much appreciated are the practical tools designed for individuals, churches, or small groups.

Please please please read this book! In order to have an intelligent conversation regarding immigration, or to make an intelligent choice at the voting polls, you need to know what the debate is all about. This book gives you background, real stories, and common sense ways of interpreting what is happening regarding immigration. The future of our Nation depends on people supporting the policies and politicians that will work for a more just society. Not that it covers everything, but, if you don’t know the information in this book, you are making those decisions in a state of ignorance.

The way Americans are being conditioned to see and live amongst immigrants and refugees needs to be aligned more closely to scripture. The heart of Jesus drives this important conversation; the authors of this book implement practical, researched, educated input into a conversation that has been unfortunately obliterated by political extremism and rhetoric. This book resets the moral compass, the legal compass and the biblical compass. This is a book that should be in every church library and should be utilized by every pastor.

I read this book to make myself more educated about the immigration issue and wow did it educate me!!! This is an important book and I have been telling anyone who will listen that they NEED to read it. Don't believe the emails and Twitters that bash those who have come here not necessarily because they want to but because it's a place where they are so much safer than their home country.

This book provides a solid and comprehensive understanding of U.S immigration from a Christian perspective. It explains the bokenness and complexity of our current immigration system, offers a biblically-based framework to understand immigrants and immigration, and offers a hopefull way forward. It is the best book I have read on how Christians should respond to our immigration situation and our immmigrant neighbors. Immigration is one of the mors important issues facing not only our country but churches across the country. We cannot ignore it or remain ignorant Any U.S Christian who wants to understand the immigration issue in our country based on facts and a biblical worldview should read this book. It is especially timely given the growing debate surrounding this issue.

An easily-understood history of immigration with clear, relevant, recent anecdotes. Best I've read on the subject.

Gruesome Spectacles: Botched Executions and America's Death Penalty

Review

"We have harnessed the power to annihilate life on earth. Yet we still can't seem to extinguish, quickly, painlessly, and reliability, a single human life. Gruesome Spectacles tells us why. With his bright, clear, and extra-ordinary prose, Austin Sarat raises many disturbing and profound questions―not only about botched executions―but about State authorized killings made on behalf of the American people. A gripping and provocative read." (Richard Moran Mount Holyoke College)"Sarat's chronicle of how executions were bungled, mishandled, or failed is crucial to the evolution of the methods, and thus to the penalty itself . . . Sarat's comprehensive and even exhaustive effort provides a reference that all involved in criminal justice, and especially capital punishment, must take into account." (Jon M. Sands and Dale A. Baich Jurimetrics: The Journal of Law, Science and Technology)"Sarat is mostly sucessful in navigating these dangerous waters of describing the gruesomeness of botched executions without making them just a spectacle or systematic failure of people or equipment. His success is a result of balancing accounts from a variety of sources, situating his work in the social sciences and legal studies." (David Fazzino Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania)"America has no more incisive scholar of capital punishment than Austin Sarat, who always has something fresh to say. Gruesome Spectacles offers readers new and provocative insights." (Scott Turow author of Ultimate Punishment: A Lawyer's Reflections on Dealing with the Death Penalty)"Austin Sarat's spellbinding book has captured the spirit of his agile mind. Gruesome Spectacles is provocatively written and sure to keep readers keenly interested in the captivating stories of many death row prisoners. This book will hook you from the first chapter and continue to fascinate you throughout its journey. A must-read." (Charles Ogletree author of All Deliberate Speed and The Presumption of Guilt)"Absolutely eloquently written." (Ray Paternoster The Historian)

No book can adequately express the horror of state sanctioned killing. This book tries but pictures are worth a 1000 words and for the squeamish there are none. What is here is a fascinating and scholarly approach to our barbaric customs and rituals. The author explains that the rituals are of recent origin starting in the middle of the 19th Century. The middle class was first coming in to its own and sought to demonstrate a moral superiority over the lower classes by distinguishing themselves from the "common mob". To appeal to this set of voters Governments began experimenting with more "painless" methods of killing (none work). Other cosmetic touches including doing away with "public" executions, forbidding pictures or any other method of recording the barbarity and putting the killing behind prison walls were all designed to take the "heat off the official killers, and turn the scrutiny, not on the killing itself but rather on the process, the crime details and the imagined "retributive" benefits when an execution takes place. As Mr. Sarat and his team of researchers show the State has a stake (pardon the expression) in these sanctified killings. Politicians fall over each other to show that they are "tough" on crime and criminals. But the key question that Sarat and his team wanted answered was whether an execution benefitted the penalty proponents or their opposition. Until we end state sanctioned killing the question wii remain unanswered.

Although a bit dry in some instances, descriptions of botched executions and desperate prisoners literally fighting their captives to stave off their deaths were at once chilling and sobering. This text also did a fair job of detailing the miserable childhoods and legal troubles of those who succumbed. Reading about a prisoner's violent crimes and seeing his mugshot on TV or in the paper elicits little sympathy for the pains they suffered during their executions, but reading accounts of some of the condemneds' abuse (including one man who suffered such severe brain damage after shooting both a policeman and himself in their head, whereupon he suffered severe mental breakdown and could not have comprehended either why he was in jail or why he would be executed) was an low-power....to say the least.

Such an interesting and informative book. Great writing and really great info!

Very informative and in some instances shockingly gruesome!

Great!

Just slow and boring.

A gripping narrative borne out of meticulous research. Once I started this book, I could not put it down.

This book raises some really important questions about the death penalty and its meaning in a civilized first world country. Sarat draws from historical cases and philosophical texts on power, justice, and sovereignty to problematize the moral and ethical conditions for the state killing its own. In presenting these cases, Sarat does a fair job of trying to remain objective and fair, though the questions he asks somewhat allude to his position--a position I personally agree with. This book is clearly written and accessible without compromising the complexity of the issues being addressed. A delightful read.
