For a clear and concise introduction to very exciting parts of the world, this is the book! Unlike most children's books, it does not come with illustrations. It comes with photos. Photos very clear and specific to their subject. We see icebergs having broken off from sheets of ice three miles thick, otherwise called the North Pole. We see penguin herds flocking together, standing like men in their regal coats, at the South Pole. What surprised me (and we see a photo of it) is that moss actually grows in the Antarctic. A slice of green life. The prose is very simple, easily readable to or by children. The book itself is small -- less than the standard size. And there's a gorgeous picture on its cover of a tall archway of frozen ice and underneath it float icebergs (four of them) of sparkling white.Oh we get to read about Arctic hares, Arctic foxes and polar bears. And the people who live within the Arctic Circle: the Inuit of Canada and Alaska, the Laplanders of Northern Europe. The book is short -- only 30 pages long. Just enough to take both child and adult on a wondrous journey.

The Top and Bottom of the World is one of the themes I teach each January in my Transitional Kindergarten class. I was so thankful to find the book by Allan Fowler bearing the same title. The photograph illustrations are simple and clear, just right to interest 4-6 year old children. The text too is appropriate for young and older children while being accurate and informative. The vocabulary list at the end is helpful while preparing lesson plans and projects.

great book The information and pictures are great and the children I read them to love them and they get excited each time I read them

great book about the Arctic.

Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children, by Angela J. Hanscom

Review

“Balanced and Barefoot offers new ways to see, solve, and prevent the reactive behaviors and emotions that cause kids to struggle and parents to worry. Full of practical ways to give kids the kinds of experiences that will help them thrive, this book is a must-read for parents and teachers alike.”—Tina Payne Bryson, PhD, coauthor of the New York Times bestsellers The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline“Angela Hanscom explains—beautifully and convincingly—why unrestricted outdoor play is essential to children’s healthy sensory, motor, social, and intellectual development, and she shows how we can enable such play in today’s world.  I recommend this book highly to all parents, educators, and pediatric health professionals, and to anyone involved in making decisions that affect children’s lives.”—Peter Gray, research professor of psychology at Boston College, and author of Free to Learn“In Balanced and Barefoot, Angela Hanscom gives adults permission to release the reigns without fear. Her expertise as an occupational therapist affirms what so many of us know intuitively: children thrive when they have access to rich, self-directed play opportunities.”—Erin Davis, director of The Land: An Adventure Play Documentary“Here I am, the ‘Free-Range Lady,’ and I, too, was often shocked and saddened to see my kids (and others) not know how to organize their own games outside with their friends. This is the book I needed when they were younger!”—Lenore Skenazy, founder of the book, blog, and movement, Free-Range Kids“I am a fan and proponent of Angela Hanscom’s nature-based philosophy. Her new book is an eye-opener as she presents from experience, observation, and scientific research not only the benefits of physical activity and free play for children, but also the mental and emotional necessity. In a culture that markets devices that restrict infant movement, endorses early education for toddlers, and over-schedules structured activities for children of all ages, Hanscom’s book is both illuminating and timely. Eloquent, logical, and reasoned, Balanced and Barefoot is a gift and an important read for educators, caregivers, and parents.”—Janet Lansbury, author of Elevating Child Care and No Bad Kids“Exposure to nature in early childhood provides a wide range of sensory and psychological advantages for child development. Stimulation of all senses improves physical and mental balance. Natural, free play—as proposed by Angela Hanscom—is essential for nurturing stronger and healthier bodies and minds. I recommend this important book to all parents and teachers, because we need to have the TimberNook experience everywhere.”—John M. Tew, Jr., MD, professor of neurosurgery, surgery, and radiology at the University of Cincinnati, and executive director of community affairs at UC Health and UC College of Medicine“Balanced and Barefoot offers a refreshingly straightforward approach that counters the pressures many well-intentioned parents feel in raising children today. It’s about backing off and giving children the space to do what they naturally do—to explore and figure out the world, to make decisions, and use their imagination. Being outdoors allows children to learn about themselves, gain confidence and flexibility, learn to problem solve, and get along with others. These are all traits they need for healthy development. I recommend this book for every parent looking to raise an independent, caring, resilient and confident child.”—Tovah P. Klein, PhD, director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development, and author of How Toddlers Thrive

This book is a game changer. I thought I knew a lot about child development, both through experience and education. After I read this book I had a paradigm shift that I would describe as changing my philosophical, spiritual, and education views. This book is a must read for anyone interested in helping children develop the way they were created to develop. I am a different parent because of this book. I will be making different educational choices for my children because of this book.

This is a nice quick resource on why it is so important to get your child outside. It offers some insight into how to combat the cultural push away from allowing our kids to be independent. This book is very simple to read and attempts to backup the claims within. It is a sort of sad reality that some of the advice is difficult to follow. Simply put, it is time to take back childhood and let children become explorers.

I felt like this book was repetitive. The author used the same points over, and over. And over. The book could have been down to a handful of well-written blog posts.*I do agree that getting our kids out in nature is really, really important, BUT this book takes the view that taking them outside is some kind of magical panacea that will heal all our issues.*I picked the book up hoping for some practical guidance (it has a chapter devoted specifically to babies being outside and one for getting kids who are less imaginative to play). That was a disappointment. For example, the advice on babies? Don't panic about germs, let them chew on the stick they find, and just keep an eye on what they put in their mouth. Um? Really? This is Ten Dollar advice?Anyway, I'm sorry, I usually don't like to bash books. I was just bummed.

Angela does a great job of melding theory with practical experience. I found myself looking back at my childhood and totally agreeing with Angela that we have somehow forgotten about what she calls "free play" I'm in my sixties, and after reading this book I feel like going outside to build a fort. As a grandparent I found this book very enlightening.

I loved this book. It's time to get bck to the basics. I already knew this but I enjoyed the book because it made me realize there is nothing wrong with skipping the play dates and letting my kids be free instead.

I am an Early Childhood Educator with over 35 years of teaching experience. I've seen firsthand the decline of childhood, play, and the physical deterioration of young children; all resulting in an inability to effectively learn skills across the board. This book, in easy to read language, points out the research of why and how this is happening. It also gives many practical strategies how to reverse this all-too-common trend. I highly recommend this for parents, teachers, or anyone with an interest in young children.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. I purchased it as part of an independent course I am taking as a teacher and have found a lot of information that is applicable to my students and my own children. There's a lot in the book that I can pull from when I need to back my beliefs as a parent (and a teacher) who allows her children to get messy and explore the outdoors.

LOVE this book. Applying ideas as a mom and teacher. Everyone who is around children should definitely read. The info is very crucial for child development.
