Spoiler-free review: Set in a fictionalized medieval Korea, Yona of the Dawn follows Yona, a once-pampered princess who grows into a capable leader and revolutionary. On the run from her treacherous cousin, the new King, she gathers a small band of fiercely loyal comrades, and learns that her father's reign may not have been as idyllic as she believed.Equal parts politics and personal melodrama, Yona of the Dawn is a brilliantly-crafted action-adventure with a distinctly feminist flair, featuring a host of colorful characters (male and female, young and old) with complex and believable motivations. There are undercurrents of romance and tragedy, but also a good balance of humor and plenty of action.The early volumes move a bit predictably, although the pacing is good and the stories interesting, if episodic. Once all the key players are assembled, the story blossoms along with Yona - her growth as a leader and warrior mirrors the manga's layering of nuance and character evolution.There is a lot to chew over, especially for fans of history or historical fiction - from the costumes & weapons, to the geopolitics & geography, a lot of research into real-world Korea went into this story. The romance aspect is handled well too, although maybe it's a bit slow-paced compared to shorter works. There are some specific touches of fantastic/mystical abilities, notably among Yona's companions, but otherwise it is very much grounded in real-world concerns.Definitely recommended for any fans of the historical (fantasy) genre, or anyone looking for something a bit meatier to read that's not too dense or depressing. Especially good for teens/teen girls, but I might not recommend it to younger kids for the intense politics and real-life subjects like drug addiction, slavery/abduction, prostitution, and assassination.

I watched the anime a couple of weeks ago, fell absolutely in love with it, and have rewatched it three or four more times. I got a friend hooked on it as well. IT IS THAT GOOD. So of course I was going to buy the first volume of the manga! I preordered it, it arrived on the release day, and read the whole thing that night. For those who have watched the anime, this volume covers episodes 1-3, and I'm happy to say the anime follows pretty closely.For those who have not seen the anime and do not know much about Akatsuki no Yona (or Yona of the Dawn), it follows the story of Yona, a pampered 16 year old princess who witnesses the murder of a loved one and is now on the run for her life. Accompanying her is her childhood friend/bodyguard Hak, who has vowed to protect her at all costs. In order to survive, Yona must not only pick up a sword and a bow, but also track down the Four Dragons of the old legends; only then will she discover her true destiny. A warning to those just picking up the manga and who do not know where this story goes: Yona is pretty annoying in the beginning. She's a princess who has never known pain or weariness, and is only concerned with winning the heart of the man she loves (not Hak...that would be far too simple!) and how horrible she thinks her red hair is. In the anime, you discover at the end of the second episode where her character development leads to (by far my favorite scene in the whole series--seriously, just watch it, people), and that gives you an incentive to keep watching because that girl is NOT the same spoiled princess you've spent some time with. Volume 1 of the manga centers around Yona's pampered life and childhood memories, before any character development takes place, and she is definitely your classic helpless princess in distress. Do yourself a favor and don't give up just yet!! Her story gives room for fantastic character development, and it definitely doesn't disappoint. If you don't have the patience to sit around waiting for the English translation of the manga to be released every few months to be hooked, watch the anime and get a feel for Yona's journey. You'll be glad you did.Yona of the Dawn has something for everyone. Action, humor, a bit of romance, lovable characters, a controversial and complex villain that you love to hate, a strong fantasy-like appeal (it's pretty clean stuff--no nudity, witchcraft, hardcore magic and spells, etc. that often comes with the fantasy genre; I personally like fantasy that way, but I know others that see it as a sort of watered down coffee), and an overall engaging story. I HIGHLY recommend it, though don't judge the whole story and Yona's character on this one section.

I've now purchased the Kindle version, the physical version, and all digital episodes of the anime. I'm seriously considering ordering the original Japanese volumes even though I can in NO WAY read kanji. (Sadly that's not something you can pick up from years of subtitled anime.)I've been a semi casual anime fan for a long time (subs are amazing to do cardio to!) but never really made it to manga. I'm not a comic/graphic novel fan and the opportunity cost for finding translations on the few that peaked my interest after the anime (ex: Erased) was too high (or "not on torrent or iTunes" -- yes, I'm lazy). However, after episode 5 of the anime I knew I must own all of the Yona noa.Suffice it to say I've now read everything there is at least twice (thank you fan translations <3). Please buy this. Please buy all of the things. I'm concerned that the Zeno arc OVAs mean there won't be an anime season 2....THERE MUST BE A SEASON 2!! The anime is a beautiful (and very true to the original) adaptation.Please support this and the brilliant Kusanagi and hopefully future anime adaptations. Please also watch and buy the anime!!! I need my fix!!

The stated focus on 1945-1950 applies only to the discussion of US political and Korean war events, which is quite good, but bears no relation to the rest of the book. Most of the book is concerned with New York based intellectual and artistic people and their contributions; the time period is the entire 100 years prior to 1950. The author certainly has an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, but there is neither a central theme nor any milestones of progress.

The NY Times review made it seem to me that this book focused on 1945 to 1950.. .that would have been great. What it is: a recounting of the New York artistic, literary, bohemian and publishing worlds from the Civil War to the middle of the 20th century. There is a first chapter about an FDR parade in NYC, but the rest of the book does NOT have that focus on the immediate post-war period. The book reads like the author wanted to turn his lifetime collection of notes on the New York "scene" into a book.... I could become confused about WHICH post-war period he was documenting.

David Reid overpromises with his title. To be sure it is about the arts community in Greenwich Village and the left leaning politics associated with it. However it is not about New York City and what he calls the American Empire of the late 1940s. He rightfully opens his book with FDR’s open car tour in the rain for three million New Yorkers in the late days of his 1944 reelection campaign. After all as Michael Barone wrote so eloquently that New York City was the city that was winning the war. Unfortunately that is the last we see of the average New Yorker. He also doesn’t flush out the role of New York’s foreign policy elite in shaping Truman Administration policy.Reid’s book would have been far better if he placed the political left and the arts community in the context of the hopes and aspirations of eight million New Yorkers who suffered through the privations 15 years of depression and war. What they wanted was to move to the suburbs or the new apartment blocks rising in Queens, buy cars and above all else they wanted to have babies. These wants were hardly a priority for the villagers he discusses. Also nowhere is there a discussion of the important role played by baseball in the lives of the average New Yorker. There were far more discussions about the 1947 pennant races than the potential for a Henry Wallace campaign in 1948. Further in 1947 Jackie Robinson broke the color line in baseball which had far reaching political consequences.What Reid does discuss is the minutia of Greenwich Village going way back to the 1800s and the denizens who lived there. He brings to life the beginnings of abstract expressionism, the rise of Norman Mailer as a great novelist and the differences between “The Partisan Review” and “Commentary”. Then of a sudden he goes into a discussion of the Truman Administration and its growing Cold War posture. To me Truman is a hero, not so to Reid.As a result I was disappointed. Those interested in in the narrow comings and goings of the Greenwich Village of the late 1940s would have a more positive review of the book than me.

But then becomes a numbing list of bohemians, artists, socialists, and crazy characters of mixed interest and little depth a piece.Also, while some backward context was needed, there was not enough focus on the actual period in question.

Just an incredible book, The facts--and there so many new ones to learn here--link together like the lines in an epic but lyric poem. Yes, this is certainly a book about the US in the 1940's, but more: it's about the prodigious mind of David Reid.

Superb intellectual and social history of the city and the US, not just in these five years, but really across the span of twentieth century America. Great grasp of the progressive, avant-garde reality of that time. The title of the book might be off -putting for those interested in broader sweep of things, but do not let it deter you.

The author wanders all over 1890 to the present. Interesting, but more focus needed.

If I had to only have one book in my life as a recovering addict it would definitely be "The Basic Text." In the beginning of my journey in recovery I had an AA book and "The Basic Text." Though the AA literature was well-written I felt the NA's literature was much more in step with the present-day. And even though I identified with other recovering alcoholics I used narcotics more than anything else and found much deeper identification within the meetings of Narcotics Anonymous and the pages of "The Basic Text." The first half of the book deals with "Who Is An Addict?", "What Is The Narcotics Anonymous Program?", "How It Works", "The Twelve Traditions Of NA" etc. The second half, or Book Two: Personal Stories, is exactly that--personal stories of individual recovering addicts and how they found help thru NA. I really enjoyed reading some of these. Within these stories is where I identified with the feelings that other addicts go through. Identification is key to the recovery process. I owe my life to Narcotics Anonymous, and frankly, life today is GOOD! Thank-you.

This book, and this program saved my life. After reading just the first chapter I no longer felt alone in my disease. What a great book! I got sober in the halls of AA and always read AA literature, but this book is very well written and much more modern and relatable for addicts! I know many find it hard to relate to the Big Book, well read this and then you'll have no excuses! Just know that reading a book will not get and/or keep you clean or sober, there is much work to be done

This book helped put me on the path to saving my life and learning to live life without needing substances to numb my emotions. It provides so much more than just "quit using" advice. It helps addicts build a foundation for living and enjoying life without drugs. It includes many stories that every addict can relate toon some level.As a bonus, it came in softcover. I do outreach work, bringing NA meetings into jails and other institutions. The jails require softcover literature, so this book was perfect to donate for inmates' use.

Perfect reference that still includes alcohol as a drug. Works a little different than AA but always puts steps and program first. Maybe not as many references to God but still an awesome book.

I am not done with the book, and I am not sure I can finish it. It jumped from first person using the defense lawyer to first person of the jilted rich woman and back, and now we have introduced yet another first person in the form of a detective. Also, we know that Peter is dead because it tells us this in the prologue. Then the story jumps back 4 months, and as things happen during those 4 months, we don't have any clear reference of how the time passes. Suddenly a third woman is dead and we don't know if it was a week after the beginning, a month, two months, nothing clear. Also, editing-wise, at one point Cal turns to Cal. Really? How could they have missed that? The defense attorney is not likable. The rich woman seems so pathetic, even though the author's written word is saying otherwise. The angry adolescent who "hates" her mother is so overdone. There just aren't any characters to like in this story. As readers, we want to relate to somebody, and there isn't anyone. I laugh when I read the 5 star ratings. It's not anywhere near there, not even close. The writer likes to throw in historical Philly facts, and that adds a little flavor, but it doesn't add enough to compensate for the uneven, silly story. I recommend to save your money.

Dan Lazar is a lawyer with a reputation of defending Philadelphia’s more questionable criminal element, and it is during his high profile defense of a low-level pimp against charges of being a notorious serial rapist-murderer that he is introduced to Peter Boelter, the owner and publisher of the major newspaper, the Philadelphia Herald, and his beautiful socialist wife, Susan. After successfully defending his client by breaking down a key witness, Dan suddenly finds himself the target of a baseless accusation of witness tampering and bribery that threatens his career. Meanwhile, when Susan defies Peter on a stock vote regarding the paper, she is suddenly faced with a devastating divorce suit designed to strip her of any money, child custody or dignity. Susan reaches out to Dan for help and the two become lovers. But after Peter is found dead and evidence begins to point to Susan, Dan faces a conflict of interest in defending a woman he is having an affair with. For the most part, the story is well-written, deeply complex and keeps the reader’s interest in the mystery. There are some unlikely coincidences that are designed to extend the suspense, and at times, the scales of justice are pushed a little too off-balance to create more pressure than necessary, but the main characters’ conflict over truth, justice and desire are well-explored.

Uneven writing, some just plain terrible. For example, the author describes a sharp-edged blunt instrument. That's an oxymoron. Poorly constructed sentences, such as the one describing the man who found a job as a waiter and a wife.The main character and the love interest fall into and out of love numerous times as he becomes convinced she's a murderess, then not, then yes, then no. No relationship could realistically survive this.And the scenes in the courtroom are simply not credible. No judge would tolerate the direct address by one attorney to he other.Very weak all around.

a well written book, which suddenly turns from a legal mystery to a who done it! i dont understand this compulsion in writers, when they run out of legal ideas they turn to unnecessary story complications! so this turns out to be another pot pourri of love story, murder, politics and confused lawyer. still the author's writing style is good enough to keep you reading it till the end.

Generally OK .However the story line dragged a lot almost to the point of tossing it aside.Action did pick up a little after midpoint .The ending was completely in believable particularly in light of earlier descriptions of his devotion to truth and the law . In essence, there are too many surprising twists at the end and final sentence destroys entire book

This was a good book. The story moved along and the characters were believable and entertaining. My guess of the murderer was right in the end but the story had so many twists and turns that I wasn't really sure until the author revealed it. What I liked best though was the author's writing. Interspersed with this fast paced murder mystery were all these gems of insight and philosophy about life and love and justice and other ponderings as the main character talked to himself about what was going on. Loved the style of writing, kept my interest throughout.

Joe Amiel created a delicious cocktail of greed, betrayal, murder and, oh yes, sex. I was up until 4:00 this a.m. to finish this book because I could not stand the suspense of "who done it" any longer. In this well-crafted novel you won't find out until the very end. The michigas of the cast of fascinating characters makes for a delightful read and the social/historic background Mr. Amiel manages to add, without slowing down the action, gives them solidity and dimension. Can't wait until the Kindle release of his next novel.

This is the first book that I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. For those that love being on the side of the defense in courtroom drama you will love this book. It has everything; unexpected twists and turns, romance without lewd descriptions, surprises that you just don't see coming, characters that aren't who they appear to be. You will be part of the main characters personal problems such as divorce and children that many people can relate to today, his relationship with fellow attorneys who will do anything to further their station in life, and above all the job of a defense attorney to defend someone at all cost, and the repercussions of just doing his job. I highly recommend this book, a good book without being too deep. One that moves fast and holds the readers interest throughout, and most of all it keeps you guessing till the end.

Very practical advice and information. My fiance each have our own book and workbook. Get the workbook. That's where the real growth takes place, whereas this gives information. I've done the first 20 or so activities in the workbook so far and only 1 of them was a waste of time.The information is not watered down at all. The chapters are all concise and worth the read. It includes chapters on listening, gender roles (and misconceptions), how to stay in love, etc. I would recommend this book because it is extremely practical, unlike other premarital books that are more vague.I am a Christian, and this book does not mention the bible very often. The writers are definitely believers, but they did not include a lot of biblical information in the book. I, for one, welcome that because I have already heard plenty of sermons on marriage. This was exactly what I wanted. Anyone can use this book, regardless of religion.The book is also meant for engaged and married alike. The information is useful regardless of relationship status

I am a Pastor and I have been using SYMBIS as part of our pre-martial mentoring program for at least 5 years. We use the DVD curriculum along with this workbook, and a few other things to make it fun. I can honestly say that this is a great workbook! It helps cultivate conversation and get talk going about things that many couples overlook before they get married. My wife and I have walked many couples through pre-marital mentoring for the past 20 years. This has been a great addition to our curriculum!

My boyfriend and I have found this a great resource to use as we move towards our engagement. It has caused us to talk about a lot of the issues we are encountering and handle them in a positive way. It is amazing how many arguments start by unspoken expectations. Once we started considering disagreements that way, it made us open up to one another more. What a fantastic book.

Really good workbook that lets couples think through situations and ideas, and then compare answers with each other. It gives perspective and helps them talk through things that they may not have thought about as a couple yet. Helps them set better expectations as they prepare for marriage, and even after. We are doing pre-marriage counseling, and it's one of the best resources that we've ever used.

My wife and I read through the books and the study guide while we were engaged. SOOOOOO good!! Even if you aren't a Christian, the principles in communication are amazingly helpful. For us, as believers, perhaps even more so.I highly recommend it with the study guide. The exercises are really good to help you understand how the other person thinks, what's important to them, and to get a head start - from a married perspective anyway - on who the other person is.I haven't been married that long, but ask your other married friends - you may think you know all about the other person before you get married, but you learn a ton more once you're married. You also learn a lot about yourself.The reason this book and study guide are so good is they help you think through things & issues that are common in marriage, common differences between men and women, etc.And there are some great tools, like "Temperature Check". The book/guide go into more detail, but it provides a really beneficial communication tool to share things you like, don't like, don't understand, or would like to see changed.I'm making all of my future kids go through when they get engaged.I can't recommend it highly enough! If you're getting married, get it. If you are married and know you could use some communication help, get it.Cheers! :)

Anyone who is engaged or discussing engagement should read this book and do the workbook that follows. There is a workbook for him and her. It has been a great help and inspiration for my fiance and I. Although we have not ran into any red flags, it has opened our eye more to the fact that we are different people that think differently about some things. It has been nice to be able to discuss these things now rather than wait until after we are be married and be shocked.

Good, practical advice here. Nothing ground breaking or earth shattering, but this book is filled with some very good reminders that will help you and your partner to build a solid foundation and learn more about each other's wants and needs. This book teaches from a biblical perspective, but the content is a blend of Christian teachings and lessons that would be relatable for non-religious couples, as well. We used these books in conjunction with pre-marital counseling we completed at an area church, and the books had accompanying videos that were awesomely 90's-tastic; though the content was still good.

I love this workbook. It covers everything you should discuss with your partner before marriage. Often without some sort of prompting these conversations would remain unsaid. The book is written with a nondenominational Christian bent which will make it appeal to many people. The exercises were quick and easy to follow. I highly recommend this workbook and the accompanying textbook.

About the Author

Margot Kahn spent seven years attending rodeos and interviewing and riding with Bill and Carole Smith at their ranch near Thermopolis, Wyoming. She is a graduate of Bates College and Columbia University's MFA program in nonfiction, and was the recipient of the Ohioana Library Association's Walter Rumsey Marvin Grant for a promising young writer in 2005. She lives in Seattle.

A great book! I know nothing about horses or rodeos, but this book is so well written and the author puts together such an interesting biography for bronc-rider Bill Smith that I couldn't put it down. I even consider myself against rodeos because of their treatment of horses and live stock, but Ms. Kahn gives you the horse's perspective, too, and you see Bill Smith evolve in his understanding and treatment of them. His life is pretty amazing--some of his adventures are spectacular (like riding an avalanche, for example)--and I'm glad to have found this book as part of my research on something else. The book is well researched and Ms. Kahn is a sensitive, welcoming, and fun writer.

I ordered this book because I have several students who are rough stock riders. While I have yet to read the book, the student who borrowed it as soon as I brought into our classroom is loving it. He says it is authentic and even mentions people he actually knows. I will add to my review once I can pry it from his hands.

Wonderfully written story of my husband's rodeo life

I love this book. It's a beautifully written account of riding the rodeo circuit, and a wonderful human story that I couldn't put down. I stayed up all night to read what happened next. I've given this book to many friends since reading it, whether or not they like bronc riding -- people just like the story and history. Fascinating for anyone interested in American heroes and the West!

What a fascinating history of bronc riding, rodeo, some places I have been and a place I live right now. This is both a romantic old west story and a brutally truthful tale all at once about the journey to the pinnacle of the sport of rodeo and one of its toughest events. Along the way there is heart break, bones breaking, going broke, and winning big! There are world championships and finding true love too. That's where my cousin comes in. What a great biographical adventure.
