A memoir by an exceptional woman, Betsy Whyte, this book brings to life the way of life of the Scottish "traveller" before and during World War 2. When the book begins, the writer is fifteen and when it ends she is married with children. It is one of the best books I have read for her vivid descriptions of the Scottish countryside and the "traveller" lifestyle, as well as poignant insights about people, religion, and nature. This little book should be on everyone's must read list!

I didn't enjoy this quitte as much a Yellow on the Broom but would definitely recommend it if you have read 'Yellow.' Having been to the area of Scotland where Betsy Whyte lived, it was especially meaningful.

Not a great read but enjoyable especially if you are interested in traveling people and the culture. Told from the viewpoint of a young girl growing up

While it is not as great as her first autoiography, The Yellow on the Broom, I still highly recommend it. It's the story of a way of life which is now gone, and it makes me want to live in that time period and (sometimes) live their lifestyle.

I've been on the lookout for a book that catalogues the constellations a little more compehensively than just your average book of Greek myths, and this volume fills that void admirably. I love that it covers both the mythic and some of the historical/scientific information connected with the various stars. I could do with the text portions being a little bigger, but the illustrations are incredible and there's still plenty of facts, stories, and lovely star names that I wouldn't have come across otherwise. Well worth the price!

Very hard to navigate this book but it contains a ton of information about routes you cannot find anywhere else. Thank Tony!

Since this guidebook is the only one available for climbing in Wadi Rum, it's a must for anyone who needs a comprehensive source of information for climbing there. But this book is clearly outdated. Route descriptions are generally bad, especially for approach. Many routes are missing, although both topos and description can be found elsewhere. Basically no serious effort to stay up to date was done for nearly 20 years. It's a pity, since the place is one of the best and unique spots on the planet.

Used this book for a climbing trip in 2013 and it was great. There is apparently a new area with new steep sport climbing that is not in the book, perhaps they will be published in a newer edition.

I bought the first edition in 1994 when we trekked in Wadi Rum with our baby of 4 month. It's was helpfull.Wadi Rum is tucked away in the south of Jordan, close to the Red Sea port of Aqaba, remote and splendid in both landscape and culture, yet only a five-hour flight and a short onward journey from Europe.Here are detailed descriptions and 'topos' of all the known routes to date, from short walks, camel treks and 4-WD journeys through sports climbs and major 'big walls' of the highest technical difficulty.Additionally the author gives information on sites of antiquity, flora and fauna and life with the Bedouin. It is their roguish humour and warm hospitality as much as the magnificence of these deserts and mountains that make a visit to Rum a unique experience. This book tells you everything you need to know.It is a remote and spectacular landscape, offering unlimited rock for the pioneer, as well as many superb existing routes of all grades of difficulty, while the desert and numerous "siqs" or canyons offer a wilderness experience not to be found anywhere else in the world. The wealth of experience is further increased by the Bedouin whose homeland this is, and by the variety of wildlife to be found in the area. It is hoped that this book will allow others to savor the solitude and mystical magic of these deserts and mountains.

Ting-xing Ye, called Ah-Si because she was the fourth child in her family, was born in 1952. Her father was the prosperous owner of a Shanghai factory, which was confiscated by the government in 1959. The authorities promised compensation, but when he demanded that it actually be paid, he was forced to do menial work in the factory. Paralyzed by a fall, he died three years later. Ah-Si's mother suffered a painful death soon after. Their children were labeled capitalists and landlords, automatically signaling trouble for them. When Ah-Si was 16, she was sent to a prison farm near the Yellow Sea, where she survived for six years. Eventually, people left the countryside, and Ah-Si passed the entrance exam for Beijing University, the only person in the prison camp to do so. This book includes a bit of insight into the infighting that was going on in China between the forces backing Mao and those backing Lin Biao, his second in command. Nothing is pretty about Ah-Si's description of the life she led, but she did what she was asked and survived because of the strength of her character and her resilience. Poignant and touching story of a trying time in China;s recent history.

A potential reader trying to assess the content of this memoir of almost four hundred pages by looking at its title, the portrait and back-cover summary would perhaps categorize it as a dreary tale of woe by an escapee from the chaotic social and political nightmare that comprised the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Yes, it is about that: a tale of horrendous suffering and deprivation, denial of justice and human compassion, a family torn apart by poverty and displacements enforced by the arbitrary decisions imposed by a dysfunctional autocracy. It is about how an ancient civilization ingrained with quaint superstitions and Confucian principles tries to adapt to new ways; but the rules are constantly changed in worshipful obedience to a dictatorial despot, Chairman Mao. But this is never a dreary tale.The author, whose familiar name is Ah Si, Number 4—designating her birth order—born in 1952, grows up in Shanghai not long after the Communist takeover in 1949. She loses her parents at a young age and becomes dependent on her unmarried aged Great-Aunt. She and her four siblings exist in poverty, trying to sustain themselves during famines, economic disruptions and social chaos. Because her father had been a factory owner she is labeled as belonging on the wrong side of the factional struggles. This is a shadow that hangs over her no matter how much she tries to overcome her hardships. She is sent away to work on a prison farm where conditions are inhumanely primitive and authority carries a big stick for anyone who fails to toe the line. But Ah Si is a survivor who against all odds eventually is placed in a position of influence as a translator and becomes a co-ordinator of receiving and entertaining foreign dignitaries. In the meantime she has married and become a mother. But curiously she has to accede to having a second male, who is infatuated with her husband, to be their constant companion.This is a well written book. It does not linger on setbacks and futility but moves on to take in the main events, the changes, the challenges, the twists of fate, the glimpses of hope that keep Ah Si struggling towards a better life. The book has the heart and spirit of an enduring optimism. Her life was soon turned upside down due to China's Cultural Revolution. Ting-xing and her four siblings lost both their parents and it was shortly after that their lives changed forever. Her family's home was attacked by the Red Guard's as well as their schools. Already drowning in hunger and poverty, Ting-xing, at the age of sixteen, was sent to a prison farm far from her home. There she suffered more brutality, long hours of labour and unending meetings with Guards.At one point Ting-xing is forced for hours upon hours to write down her sins against the Revolutionists but she hadn't made any and her captors would hear none of it. Yet Number 4's spirit and drive remain strong and she knows she has the courage to succeed.This was a very good novel full of history about a time period that Americans may not be familiar with. This book, while perhaps not a great *introduction* to astrophotography as it gets fairly technical rather quickly, does give you a comprehensive view of the most popular astrophotography methods and detailed explanations as to the science behind the techniques and technology, including explaining the differences between CMOS and CCD sensors at the pixel level, diagraming the physics behind different aberrations one may come across while photographing, and covering various methods of image calibration. His section on post-processing of images for deep sky photography is also detailed and comprehensive. This book does not, however, offer much in the way of introduction to the beginning astrophotographer in terms of basic equipment or setups. Thinking of it, it would probably be more helpful in the beginning to an astronomer venturing into astrophotography with little camera experience than a photographer who has interest but no experience in astronomy. If you know the difference between prime focal and afocal photography, or your alt-azimuth mount from your German equatorial mount, this book can definitely help take your astrophotography to the next level if you're willing to digest the smorgasbord of technical information Mr. Legault provides.

If you are seriously interested in astrophotography, I recommend you add this book to your library. The author very obviously "knows" his subject.This treatment of astrophotography is very comprehensive, and, as an astrophotographer myself (my specialty was faint minor planet position mensuration), I can vouch for the authenticity of Legault's treatment of the subject. Today, much popular astrophotography is devoted to making "pretty pictures", which is an art in itself.Legault, whom I do not personally know, has done a very credible job of treating many aspects of capturing excellent astrophotos with typical advanced amateur equipment. I enjoyed browsing through his book, and found much of interest ... great for a cloudy night and much good information for clear nights!My compliments to the author for a well done book.

An excellent resource if you want to get started in serious astrophotography. The explanations are very clear and detailed. The illustrations are excellent. Many different aspects of astrophotography are covered: moon, planets, deep space. Details are covered that are typically skipped over in online articles and blogs, such as the bit depth needed for planets. The author is clearly and expert and the text is easy to read. I would recommend it to others who are starting out but want to get seriously involved.

But he knows so much more than just that narrow field. And he expresses it all so well and so clearly in a language which isn't even his native one!Every time I meet or listen to Thierry, he just blows me away. This book contains so much of his knowledge and distilled experience, it would be of value at any price. My personal expertise is in planetary photography - that is not a strength of this book. But I bought it for all the OTHER areas where I am not strong. Eliminate your weaknesses, just like in any sport, hobby or competitive industry. And this book helps you do just that.It's both a readable book, cover-to-cover, and a reference book, where you refer back to specific chapters from time to time as you hone your skills. And it has a prominent place in the pile of books on my nightstand!

This is a very beautiful book, written by a renowned astrophotography expert--he's the one who apparently first captured photos of the ISS transiting the Sun. However, I was disappointed that the information is presented in a somewhat disorganized fashion. It does describe the basics of astrophotography, and gets into some severe technical detail about camera selection, exposures, etc , but I don't think it would serve as a very good book for beginners.

This is a brilliant book and, is indispensable for any one who is serious about astro photography. This goes way beyond merely photographing the night sky. that too, is an art.However, what I like about the book, is that he has combined the science and the art in a manner that is extremely approachable.It is an excellent book, and is something that anyone who is serious about this realm of photography must read.

Fantastic book. Fun to just read, but really useful if you want to get started doing astrophotography. A great balance between readability and sufficient technical detail to be truly useful. And many of the figures are amazing. This book is long overdue!
