Mollier's book is an important to the growing field of Buddho-Taoism for a number of reasons. Not only does she provide accurate and fluent translations of influential sutras and scriptures that have never been studied before in the West, she is also successful in showing the significance of popular religious practices, such as rituals and the use of talismans. Mollier's sensitive analysis of the competition between the two main religious traditions to win the hearts of potential followers reveals to us the various techniques used by religious experts in the daily life of commoners without dismissing them as folk religion. Moreover, she shows the important role played by ritual in the life of the common people who were not exposed on a daily basis to scriptural doctrine. It made me laugh sometimes when I realized how much I still do not know.

Mollier surveys a few of the 40,000-odd manuscripts found in a sealed chamber at Dunhuang, with a particular eye to the relations between Taoism and Buddhism.Against a background of interfaith rivalry (in which Taoists could depict Lao-tzu reincarnating as Buddha to convert the foreigners, whilst Buddhists had Lao-tzu as Buddha's disciple) she unpicks some interesting stuff about similar doctrines appearing in the texts of the two different faiths. This book listed as a book to be read for a unit study I picked up for free in our homeschooling group's Mom's Night Out, from another homeschool parent. The unit study was on four books, which we checked out of the library at first; then later ordered for our home library. We used some of the unit study with our daughter for the Kindergarten year, but not the entire unit study. It was on American Indian culture. She fell in love with this book at age 5, and still lists it as one of her favorites at age 7. I think this is partially because of the meaning in the book for her. She says she likes the way the people in it are depicted, and the colorful pictures. She says its meaning is that love can be a challenge.I would likely never have picked this book off the shelf in the library myself. Although I like native American stories, I tend to go for the pretty pictures (Legend of the Blue Bonnet) in a children's book, not the bold colored, angular art. The boy feels estranged from his community because he does not know who his father is, then finds out that the sun is his father, through going through trials. The trials involve Kivas, or the ritual rooms found in Pueblo structures. In the end he is a part of his community. It IS a nice story.

i remember reading this book when i was younger and hearing about it on reading rainbow. so i bought this for my girl Kendra; about a boy who goes through trials to "prove" his self worth and it's done through an indian themed story i believe. the pictures are colorful and fun to look at...hehehe it's a jpeg style drawing which i like.

I just recently found this again as an adult to share to my son. I remember the teachers back when I was about eight or a little younger showing us a movie version of this book. I found it mesmerizing. While it doesn't portray the culture that the book is based on absolutely correctly, it is a child's book and being so, sometimes things are changed to make it easier for them to understand. Also it is the writers interpretation of the myth. That being said, the book teaches children how to be heroic in their own respect and that sometimes the needs of the one, is outweighed by the needs of many.The storybook itself has amazing art work and helps keep a child engaged as the journey goes on. I love this book and I hope you will too.Buy this for a good read to your littlest ones.

Still one of my all time favorite picture books. I feel in love with it as a child and it still captures the attention of my students in the library. Colorful illustrations and a good story. A strong Caldecott Medal winner.

My mother read this book to me when I was a child, and I remember loving it, but hadn't seen it in probably 15 years until I bought it for my nephew. It is as good as I remember.I can attest to the fact that the high contrast, brightly colored drawings are mesmerizing for a small child. The best part of the book is when the boy must complete four tasks for the sun god to prove himself. The tasks are not narrated, you get to see how the tasks are completed from how the drawings change. It's so cool! I felt very smart as a little kid being able to discover what he did and figure it our for myself.On a cultural note, the narrative is similar to the Christ story. Mother gives birth to the boy (a virgin birth) after the sun god sends a ray of energy to her. The boy grows up and wants to know who his father is, and goes on a quest to find him and prove that he is indeed the son of the sun god. (That's why he becomes an arrow to the sun!)I think it's good for a child to be exposed to this story to begin to understand the universal elements of religion and that all cultures have a lot in common. Even those that seem strange are not so different from our own.

Actually one of my favorite books from my childhood. I loved it then, love it now. Bought it to give as a welcoming gift to a new baby in a friends family.

Great, clear illustrations. I was looking for a braiding book and found a highly reccomended one out of my price range, but then saw a review of 'Great Braids' indicating that it was almost the same as the more expensive one, and found it to be exactly what I was looking for.

an amazing introduction to hair braiding.

Not many styles as I had hoped

This is a good book if you haven't done much with braiding. The pictures are excellent and the descriptions thorough. What I didn't like is that the fashions are for young people - young girls or teenagers.

Bought this to do my 8 year old niece's hair. Lots of pretty braided hair styles, as advertised. Very pleased.

I was looking for some new ideas for my long hair before summer and this book is full of ideas for me to play with. has pictures and easy to follow directions.

I just borrowed this book from the library. My immediate reaction was WOW! G O R G E O U S. So I came on Amazon to acquire one immediately! I was stopped in my tracks because of the high price on the book. It's only 95 pages and I probably will not use about 1/4th because of my age, lifestyle, etc. SO I read the reviews. I always start with the lowest rating first. I was stopped in my tracks again because I already have "Hair: A book of Braiding and Style" by Anne Akers Johnson (I bought it on Amazon) that the 3 star reviewer refers to. So, I ran to get the book off the shelf. Low and behold, yup, it's not only close but Anne Ackers Johnson's contains more to my liking even though that is 71 pages. Anne Ackers Johnson's is a gorgeous book too. So, use your judgement. There are a few tips in one and not the other. Do I want to pay this number of dollars to obtain them? That's one expensive barrette. GREAT BRAIDS is a gorgeous book and well worth acquiring if it does not duplicate a lot of info alrady on your book shelf. But, that's only my opinion.

I bought two braiding books at the same time (the other was Beautiful Braids, by Coen and Maxwell) and this is by far the better of the two. There are upside down and inside out braids, as well as herringbones, twists, and some updos.The book seems to be written to beauty professionals though, since several of the styles are explained in terms of how to do it on someone else's hair, not your own. About the Author

Dr Hugh Lavery AM is one of Australia's leading authorities on sustainable development. Following his PhD in waterfowl biology (including studies at the Wildfowl Trust in U.K., the Illinois Natural History Survey in U.S.A., and the Delta Marshes in Canada), he became a founding Director in the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service - before becoming chief environmental adviser to Australia's largest corporate landholder (AMP) and later branching into sustainable major waterfront development planning. A former visiting Professor of Land Development & Environmental Planning at Texas A & M University, he has long held a professorial appointment in the Institute for Future Environments at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. In 2007, Hugh was selected as inaugural Environmental Practitioner of the Year for Australia and New Zealand and, in the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant services to the environment and conservation. Co-author John Byers is a retired police officer who currently operates a beef cattle farm in south-eastern Victoria along with a duck call manufacturing business. A passionate waterfowl hunter and observer for more than 45 years, John has studied game birds and wetlands in the field across Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A. and Canada. Since 1977, he has been a Member of Field and Game Australia, the country's premier waterfowl conservation organisation, and Secretary of its Sale Branch for the past decade. Soy ingeniera química con más de 20 años trabajando en investigacion en salud y toxicología, y refrendo lo que el autor escribe respecto a temas de mi especialidad. De otro lado, es admirable no solo todo el conocimiento y experiencia del autor sobre metabolismo, obesidad y diabetes, sino también, la manera tan sencilla y didáctica que utiliza para llevar su mensje a los lectores. Lo recomiendo ampliamente, el costo monetario es irrisorio, comparado con los beneficios que traeran a la vida de quien lo lea.

Cómo me hubiera gustado haber tenido este libro unos anitos atrás. Mi caso de metabolismo lento y de sobrepeso inició unos siete años atrás cuando me vi obligada a comer comida chatarra for falta de tiempo y desde entonces subía y bajaba de peso (lo tengo en myfitness) trate con mi doctora los medicamentos recetados y me estáncaba, traté la contador calorías, Weighwashers, dietas altas en proteínas, y demás pastillas de dieta que empeoraban mi sistema digestivo. Este libro es difícil de explicar lo maravilloso que es. Me he ahorrado dinero, esfuerzo y tiempo después que estoy aplicando el libro a mi alimentación diaria. Además de que ha impactado mucho en mi vida la frase que el autor siempre dice de que "la verdad siempre triunfa", esa misma verdad que está en su libro es la que me ha ayudado a entender de que más que un proceso es una transformación hacia un nuevo estilo de vida y alimentación más saludable y Féliz. :) Gracias y éxitos Frank Suárez. I had this book as a child growing up in the 80s and loved it. Now that I am a parent, Ive been looking up all of the books I could remember and was happy to find this on Amazon. It appears the copy I got was an out of print one though as it does not look like its still currently in print. Although this is technically a Halloween story, who doesn't like popcorn all year around?! :)

This is one of the best children's book on the market. My six grandchildren heard me reading this book over and over. I ordered one to give each of them when they have their first child if I live long enough to experience that. If not, I have given explicit instructions to the next generation how the books are to be distribute. Reading to little ones is so important. The bonus is having that special cuddle time with a book they memorize and enjoy for a long time. My oldest grandson is a Marine, and he said he will never forget that book and we will have a special bond forever. Thank you Frank Asch for being such an inspired writer for children.

So glad to find this book. I have to laugh that almost every scene in this book depicts something that would be considered bad parenting today-- leaving the kid home alone; kids wearing "inappropriate" costumes; kids using stove unattended-- but it's still a fun, silly Halloween story with great illustrations -- and who doesn't love popcorn?

This was one of our son's favorite books almost 30 years ago and so, I continue to purchase it for baby gifts. Unfortunately this and another paperback were sent in an envelope with insufficient protection for the weight and the corners of both books are smashed. I now have two "new" books that look "used with no markings."I'm not happy. I have spent most of last night fingering the corners trying to figure out how to flatten them and the pages involved and whether or not I want to give this as a present. I may be overly critical of the damage but I would never purchase this copy as a "new" book if I were pulling it off the shelf. so sad.

I remember this book fondly from my childhood. I wanted to share it with my kids (3 and 6 years old) and they love it too. I always loved the books that suspended reality and have some silly hijinks.

Had to buy this Frank Asch book for my Granddaughter, Olivia, because my Son, her Dad, was a Big Fan of 'Sand Cake' also by Frank Asch! 'Popcorn' is full of laughs & Giggles. When parents are away, a Party insues & Everyone brings Popcorn! Popping ALL Fills the House Full of Popcorn!! What to do?! Need to get this book to find out! Haha. Deliciously funny... 😄

Kids will like what happens when mom and dad go out and the kids have a party. Everyone brings popcorn to it. Parents will know what happens but the kids will delight in it. I have a craving for popcorn!

Read it to my kids in the early 90s. Bought copies for my future grand kids. Great book. Great memories.

My favorite Frank Asch book! I loved this book growing up and now my kids love it too. Its a cute silly story with nice bright picture sand a funny ending.
