Eric Meyer is THE guru for all things web-design related. As usual, this book is no exception. What a handy pocket reference to have around, especially for those of us relatively new to web development. Yes, using a book is somewhat old school but, it's organization is easy, quick and direct. No guessing as to what you're looking at. Sometimes, searching on the web can be convoluted, if only just because there are so many opinions and variations on how to do things CSS-wise. What you get from Eric Meyer is consistent and reliable information with examples that make it easy to try yourself or modify. Eventually I won't need to have this reference at my side but, when I'm doing something new (to me), it will be nice to be able to look up the language to use to at least get started with the task. For the newb or pro, a nice reference to have handy.

This little book is very good, and very quick. You can look up what you need and want very easily.The reason that I didn't give it a 5 star, is because its a bit outdated, there have been some new things with CSS, but thats not the book's fault. Its more mine, as I should have been looking more for the CSS3 information.Yes, I do recommend it, its very quick and easy and well presented.

I really should of listened to the other reviews on this one. The idea of a CSS reference sounds great, but the execution of this one is pretty poor. There is no useful index and no indication at the top of the page to let you know what section you are in. It just takes too long to find anything in this book. Save your money and use Google to find what you are looking for. The content of the book is good, just difficult to reference.

I found the format hard to understand and hard to use. Maybe it's the Kindle version. It's not what I thought; you can't learn CSS by it, it's only to look things up. I didn't find it useful, to me, anyway.

The CSS Pocket Reference is just that, a "reference". It is not a lesson guide on using CSS. It will give you the quick syntax when you need it. It also gives a list of the browsers that support each element. Very helpful if you want your page to be compatible with more than one browser.

Clear identifications made possible with this book, as I remember it.

Perfect reference for beginning web designers and college students. I am using this in conjunction with adobe dreamweaver and between the two I am learning at double the rate in my college course!

Gave this 5 stars when they first came out, but the websites available for writing CSS are just so good these days, this isn't nearly as necessary anymore.

The motivation behind this book is near and dear to me, so I had high expectations. Generally speaking, they were met. The diverse cast is not forced and the characters feel relatable. The pace of the story was good and the reading level is appropriate. The reason for the 4-stars only is that there are some errors in the book, unfortunately, related to sections dealing with code. Be mindful of these with younger readers so they don't get confused. Attempting to write these a bit spoiler free: error 1) the second section of the hints offered in chapter five and the resolution of that hint in chapter 6 - there's a slight change regarding colour that is actually an error (it should be the same colour in both instances to be 'code correct') and 2) Lucy's final 'code' message to Erin in chapter 11 and Erin's response have another mismatch - the variable names. Watch out for these two errors (almost certainly will be fixed in later prints, I would think) but other than that, this is a great book for any girl (or boy)!

This was a very fun book that introduces young minds to basic coding concepts.Young Lucy is super excited to finally be able to join the coding club at school but gets frustrated when they aren't immediately on computers making the next great app. A mysterious note leads her on an adventure of friendship and coding concepts. This fun story is a great way to introduce these topics with examples that help them stick.

I. Love. This. Book. As Reshma Saujani, founder of the organization Girls Who Code, poignantly explains in the book's preface - there exists a need for stories such as this because "You can't be what you can't see." If children don't have access to stories of people who look like them doing things like joining a coding club or designing a computer game for our classmates to play, then we don't know that opportunities like this are available to us or to even seek these opportunities in the first place. I joked to a friend that I wish this series had been available twenty years ago for me because perhaps then I would have aspired to something more than becoming the head honcho of a babysitting empire. Or at least I would have created a babysitting app in my quest for child-watching domination. (No disrespect, Ann M. Martin!)But in all seriousness, go buy this series NOW for the young children in your life (note: I did not just say "girls"). Not only do you learn about some of the basic principles of coding: input/output, loops, variables, but you get to learn it in an exciting, mystery-based format! You learn that coding can be for everyone and opportunities are endless; it can be for the fashionista, the sports fan, the girl hoping to help a family member, the shy girl at a new school; it can be used for something as fun as to prank a sibling or as serious as reminding a loved one dealing with illness to take their many medications.The other major reason I fell for this book is the personalities of and relationships between girls contained within its pages. The girls are, in a large part, sure of themselves and determined to get what they want. When they are uncertain about something, rather than sulk in indecision, they *GASP* say what they are thinking out loud and solve the problem with conversation, owning up, and collaborating. There is no silly drama or obsessing over crushes. It is a tale of some killer young ladies communicating, having each others backs, making things happen, and forging strong bonds along the way.YES TO EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK! I have already purchased the remainder of the series for my 6th grade classroom library and can't wait to speed through them before I infiltrate my student's lives with them!

My daughter loved the idea of middle school club and girls who want to change the world. Middle school relationships can be hard and that relates well in the book, with the added mystery solving is really fun. You learn to think coding language without knowing you are learning! Everyone has one of these people who used to be friends, but this book in particular helped think through how to change that around and also to make new friends!

My 7 year old daughter thinks this book rules, and I do too. Smart narrative, good writing, and it emphasizes curiosity and ingenuity. Highly recommend.

I read this book to my 7 year old and she enjoyed it and started to be interested in coding. Highly recommend! I will sure get the other books in this collection.

My 7yo LOVED this book. She is still hesitant to read books without many pictures but she spent the entire weekend with this one. I'm ordering the others from this series today.

Finally! A book supporting traditional family values backed up by facts and true life cases from our judicial system. Schlafly presents a case for the traditional family which has proved successful through the generations and guides you through the false rhetoric repeated in the media by feminists and the ill informed. She tells you how the family has been attacked and even discouraged through tax laws, family laws, the courts, etc... An excellent read for those who believe it is a home that raises a family and NOT the village. The village being code for "the government", ie; judges, social workers, school teachers, child psychologists, etc...

I had all the same suspects figured out, but I did not assign them same weight of priority that she does. After reading her book, and seeing her documentation, I agree with her conclusion.

As a victim of family court corruption, and now as a member of an organization fighting against it, I can positively say that Mrs. Schlafly accurately documents the rampant violations of parental rights and abuses of power in these kangaroo courts.

The author did an excellent job of showing the problems as well as giving solid solutions. An older woman's wisdom in a world that idolize the young.

excellent book. what an eye opener it was for me to read this. I then researched what I read and its right on. This book will not only move you, it will also make you want to do something about what you read in your own neighbor. Hard to put down, had to read it twice to get all the golden nuggets out of it. I would strongly recommend this to even young readers.

This is a must have if you are a serious TeX/LaTeX user. Knuth, the creator of TeX, discusses the concepts (eg. boxes and glue) and algorithms (line breaking, page breaking, spacing in equations) underlying the program and discusses tips, tricks and pitfalls.Even if you have no wish to poke into TeX's internals, the TeXbook is worth reading as a masterpiece of technical writing. Knuth asks you to solve exercises and tackle difficult passages marked with "dangerous bend" signs. He rewards you with witty epigraphs and in-jokes. (Regarding the pronunciation of TeX: "When you say it correctly to your computer, the terminal may become slightly moist"). Realizing how much thought Knuth has put into the design of TeX will make it harder for you to cut corners the next time you start a creative project. Among programming books I have read, only K&R has helped me more in improving myself intellectually.

I bought the TeXbook two years ago, but finally spent a few days reading it cover to cover -- and I am impressed. As many others, I started exploring plain TeX because I wanted more from LaTeX. I was surprised to find how simple and, yes, *elegant* TeX is in comparison. I guess TeX is to LaTeX as C is to C++. Certainly do not buy this book if you just want to use LaTeX!The writing is superb, full of fine detail and more than a few clever jokes. Why can't recent books about modern systems be so delightful? Maybe David Pogue's Missing Manual series comes close, but the topics are not quite as technical.As a reference, the TeXbook is weak because each command or concept is scattered across so many places: one introductory chapter, one summary chapter, in exercises, in "dangerous bend" passages, and so on. I believe the book is best organized for front to back reading, although probably in two or three passes if you include the dangerous bends. For reference, I prefer TeX by Topic by Victor Eijkhout. It is out of print, but available for download on his web site.The paperback edition of the TeXbook is spiral bound. I appreciate that it lays flat, but the back pages are always falling out of the binding!

The book is great for learning TeX---but are you using TeX now? Chances are (if you're reading this), you're a LaTeX user. My sole objection to giving this five stars is its age (no offense intended): with the current standards, some of its suggestions and pointers no longer apply.I readily stand by my four star rating: it teaches the reader about primitives, units, etc. However, one may ask "Who starts a new page with \vfill\eject when \newpage is way to go now?" However, if you want to know the answer to the follow-up question "Why is \newpage the way to go now?", then this book is for you. This is not for someone looking to learn how to typeset in LaTeX (as of this writing, the current standard). It is intended for someone who wants a better understanding of the foundations of LaTeX.

Don Knuth has a reputation for being a perfectionist, and after you read The TeXBook, you will see why. Every chapter is filled with examples and reasons why certain things are done a certain way in TeX. After you read it, you'll be a TeX-pert! har har.If you simply want to learn TeX, this is probably not the book for you, but if you're interested in the nuts and bolts of the TeX system, how Knuth tackled some of the problems with early typesetting, and more of the nitty gritty, then you'll love this book.

Maud, by Melanie Fishbane, provided by NetGalley as a digital ARC, was downloaded by me a couple of months ago. It sat on my IPad teasing me, taunting me, daring me to read it. I delayed the pleasure because I wished to savor it for as long as possible. I knew once I began reading this novel. I wouldn't be able to stop. I was correct. I read the entire book in one day. It is delicious and delightful, Melanie Fishbane captures Lucy Maud Montgomery"s voice so beautifully, it's quite haunting. It's like reading L.M. Montgomery's own journals, the words and depictions blend so well. I had to constantly remind myself this was historical fiction. It's been a long time since a book has so thoroughly entranced me like this one did. I hope the author will continue the story, with a follow up novel, soon. Melanie Fishbane is a talented Canadian writer who encapsulated a renowned, beloved icon of Canadian literature with her book.

I so wanted to like this book. I guess I went into this thinking I would be reading something like Anne of Green Gables or Emily of New Moon. Instead I found Maud blah and not very likable. I ended up not finishing the book.

Maud is an engaging fictionalized account of the early life of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of the Anne of Green Gables books beloved the world over. While a work of historical fiction, the book encompasses many known facts and events of Montgomery's life. I was very surprised to see how very similar, in many ways, her growing up years were to those of her character Anne. It was also very sad to see how, unlike Anne, she never really seemed to have support or love from much of her family. I was very intrigued to say the least, and will be looking at a full length biography of her in the future.I was struck by how hard Montgomery worked to be able to write her stories. In a time when women were expected only to marry and have children, and anything else was considered strange or even evil, she chose education over even her current happiness or in some cases relationships with her family. She seems to have been a feminist before the term was coined. Though she did of course later marry and have children, it was only after she was an established and successful author.The author takes time to shed light on the condition of women's rights at this time in Canadian history, as well as the plight of some of the native people such as the Metis. There is also particular emphasis on the conflict between different denominations within the Christian church.The author has included a brief historical biography in the back of the book, along with specifics about what happened to certain characters. This really helped to tie up the story, especially since this particular book ended before Montgomery was even eighteen.4.5/5 stars. Highly recommend for anyone who has enjoyed the Anne of Green Gables story!Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Much like The Radium Girls, Maud was written as narrative nonfiction, and it took me a little while to get into. It was very clearly based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's life, with all the hardships therein, but with a little extra lyricism on the author's part.Now that I've finished the book, I'm still not entirely sure I liked it. It was more than 400 pages, but Maud gets into college and that's the end of the story. It felt unfinished, despite the length of the story, and lacked the charming prose that Lucy Maud Montgomery used to worm her way into our hearts.There was a lot that was left unexplained. Even as someone who grew up in the church, I didn't understand why someone being Protestant wanting to be with someone who was Baptist was a big deal, even though it was talked about for probably a third of the book. It was never explored or explained, and given that this is narrative nonfiction, it needed to. We never found out why Mollie and Pensie hated each other, even though that was mentioned ten or twelve times.I also had no idea what the future held for Maud once it ended. This book was kind of a disappointment for me.
