In this brilliantly researched and written study, British medical historian Jay (The Air Loom Gang) tells the story of Thomas Beddoes (1760–1808), who established a Pneumatic Institution near Bristol to test his theories about using various gases to treat illness. Beddoes's science fell somewhere between alchemy and a truly modern medicine, and he attracted a circle that was dazzling even for its time, when salons brought together the most gifted conversationalists from across the spectrum of society. Beddoes employed the young Humphrey Davy, who quickly made important discoveries about batteries and electricity, and whose investigations of nitrous oxide lent Beddoes's work on gases some degree of respectability. Poets Samuel Coleridge and Robert Southey also came into Beddoes's orbit, as did James Watt and Josiah Wedgwood as both sponsors of Beddoes and fathers of two of his consumptive patients. Thomas Beddoes, the man who gave us laughing gas. He knew Humphry Davy, Tom Wedgwood....to actually be there!

This is an amazing story, extremely well communicated by the author Mike Jay. Although the hardcover came out a couple years ago, if you like medical history, or the history of psychoactives, or the way that mind-altering drugs affect culture and medicine, this is a really outstanding book by a true expert in the field. Strongly recommended.

Dr. Beddoes was searching for a cure for tuberculosis and thought the new science of separating air into its components--oxygen, nitrogen, etc--might yield a cure. The climax of the story comes when he and his fellow researchers began experimenting with inhaling nitrous oxide (laughing gas). The poet Robert Southey, one of many friends who gathered at Dr. Beddoes' clinic to try the "gas bag," remarked after his first experience, "The atmosphere of the highest heaven must be composed of this gas." A delightful and well-written story for those interested in the history of science. I learned a lot about the late 18th century, too.

This book is a must-have for your library. If you work in the corporate world, you need this book! If you can afford it, the Audible is excellent as well. Carla lays out several real-world scenarios and provides real-world advice for correcting any mistakes you've made in your career (I almost feel as if this book was written about me). I can't thank the author enough. I wish I had this guide 20 years ago. Better late than never. I will definitely be adding and using Carla's Pearls to my toolkit.

If you haven't read any of Carla Harris books before, and need some good career advice, read this. I purchased the kindle and upgraded to the audible to listen on a long car drive. She covers all different kinds of career scenarios and strategies to implement. This is not just another self help book - it has appropriate examples of both good and bad situations with great background and assessments. I recommend this for anyone in any stage of career life - early, mid, high end.

This book is a must read for leaders who want to UP their savvy in negotiating and navigating life in corporate America and all of its politics. Not only do I highly recommend it, I have given this book to coaching clients as a must-read, and to friends who are among the executive ranks of their careers. It is practical and easy to read but do not be fooled. Carla owns this content and presents it like few authors that I have read and I read and facilitate 40+ classes, sessions and discussions each year for the past 15.

Several chapters of the book, as listed in the table of contents, are missing. The last page in the printed book is 833 which is at the end of chapter 7. Leaving out chapters 8 through 12, the appendix, and the index. The table of contents lists the index as starting on page 1599, yet the book only has 833 pages. Unfortunately for me I didn't notice this until I'd had the book for over a month.

1. This book arrived damaged. The cover is torn in the lower right corner. Additional damage exists along the page edges opposite the spine. It looks like a box was dropped on the outer edges. Furthermore, both the front and back cover are dented and lightly scratched -- It looks extremely warn and stored without care.2. This book only contained chapters 8-12.3. The print is very light -- too light to read any of the code samples without extreme eye strain.4. This book looks and feels counter-fit.

When I ordered the book from Amazon, I didn't look at page count, so when I picked up the box from my front porch I thought it couldn't possibly contain just one book. Wow, what a monster!(Full disclosure: Back in Feb. 2004 I reviewed Singh's proposal to Addison-Wesley for this book, gave it an enthusiastic recommendation, and was paid a small sum.)I have a bunch of OS internals books, but this one at 1600 pages is more than twice as big as the next biggest. There are two reasons: Mac OS X is the most functionally rich of any OS I know of, and Singh covers it in amazing detail.I'm only up to page 50, but I've already learned a lot about Mac OS X's fascinating history, which goes back to NextStep and Mach (mid-1980s), and includes parts from the original Mac OS (now represented in Classic and Carbon) and BSD, as well as newer subsystems developed entirely at Apple. The UNIX-like part is called Darwin, and I discussed its API in my own book, Advanced UNIX Programming (available from Amazon). But Darwin is only a fragment of what Singh takes on.

It's enormous! And every page has information useful to someone who develops on the Mac. This book is the ultimate tome of reference for the serious Mac developer. It's also a significant contender as a tome of reference for IT support for the Mac. Finally, it is the best reference for someone with a Windows background who's wondering if Mac OS might be superior technically (leaving aside user interface). (it is.)All the gory details of how a Mac OS is put together from Mach to Cocoa are covered and then some. The author is a hard-core expert who put a lot into this book. Well worth the price!

Seems like a good book. Learned some useful stuff. Only one problem: pages 127-190 are missing and now I need them! Um, what...? Unfortunately, I ordered this in 2014 and now I can't return it. Glad to revise my review once I can get a replacement.UPDATE 9/30/2015:The author got in touch with me and sent me the missing pages--thank you! I got some much needed information on OS X's keychain storage.In other news, I just want to say that this book is top notch in terms of the breadth and depth of technical information on OS X. I originally purchased it for information on OS X's boot sequence and crypto facilities. It has detailed information on all this an much more.Kudos to Mr. Singh who went out of his way to help and on having written an excellent guide to OS X internals.

It reads pretty well for a technical textbook. Must read for software enthusiasts especially for those wanting insight into the history and makings of the current Apple Mac/iOS environment and probably is the only text that I know of that does a good job.

Its great book, but keep in mind it is out of date. I am sure that most of book still applies. I just don't know what applies and what doesn't in current Yosemite release. I hope they will update it one day.

I enjoyed the writing style of the author, well presented information with bits of humor to keep it interesting. I enjoyed reading the history of OS X and learning how all the parts were brought together to create the most enjoyable computing experience I have ever had. The technical information and programming examples are extremely helpful in better understanding how things work under the elegant aqua interface.
