A few years ago I started reading poetry with intention, I started looking for poets whose work that I enjoy. I found some that were quite surprising, some inspiring, some melancholy, some just bored me.Ryan's work I was not looking for anything but scatological guffaws, some perversities and other goofs. And that's what I got. Much like most of the collections of poetry of red, this is hit or miss, but it was fun and funny and lighthearted, and I'm not so sensitive aa some might be.Robinson Jeffers, John Davdison, George Sterling... he is not. But he's enjoying himself, and as long as he doesn't commit suicide he'll have two of those three beat.

I read a dozen or so of these "poems" and put the book in the garbage. I like having funny reading material by the toilet, and I'm a reasonably liberal guy, but this isn't funny, it's just trash. Sorry. The author dedicated this to his wife. My sincere sympathy goes out to her.

Some of the poems were quite entertaining!

To be fair the Author is a good friend of mine and I was fortunate enough to read alot of these rated R-X poems before the book was printed. (We share a dirty sense of humor) They are funny poems to read that will leave you thinking WTF did I just read while simultaneously laughing.

This is such a funny adult book to have in the bathroom to read. It’s a must. I think it’s extremely funny.

Great book. Funny as hell. Would recommend this book to everyone

If you have a twisted , fun spirited person in your life who laughs at our " poop endeavors", this is the book for you! Hilarious and fun to read.

What Larson is doing is creating a world that no longer exists on the page...[He] not only succeeds but is able to turn what one would expect to be tedium into page-turning brilliance.” —Digital Americana“Narrative nonfiction at its finest, this story drops into 1933 Berlin as William E. Dodd becomes the first U.S. ambassador to Hitler's Germany—a tale of intrigue, romance, and foreboding.” —Kansas City Star“One of the most popular history books this year...offers something for both serious students of the 1930s and for lovers of charming stories.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch“Erik Larson tackles this outstanding period of history as fully and compellingly as he portrayed the events in his bestseller, The Devil in the White City. With each page, more horrors are revealed, making it impossible to put down. In the Garden of Beasts reads like the true thriller it is.” —BookReporter.com“In this mesmerizing portrait of the Nazi capital, Larson plumbs a far more diabolical urban cauldron than in his bestselling The Devil in the White City...a vivid, atmospheric panorama of the Third Reich and its leaders, including murderous Nazi factional infighting, through the accretion of small crimes and petty thuggery.” —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) “An excellent study, taking a tiny instant of modern history and giving it specific weight, depth and meaning.” —Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)“A brilliant and often infuriating account of the experiences and evolving attitudes of the Dodd family during Hitler’s critical first year in power. With the benefit of hindsight, of course, the Dodds seem almost criminally ignorant, but Larson treats them with a degree of compassion that elevates them to tragic status.” —Booklist (Starred Review)“Larson writes history like a novelist...conveying quite wonderfully the electrically charged atmosphere of a whole society turning towards the stormy dark.” —The TelegraphPraise for Erik Larson  THUNDERSTRUCK“A ripping yarn of murder and invention.” —Los Angeles Times “Larson’s gift for rendering an historical era with vibrant tactility and filling it with surprising personalities makes Thunderstruck an irresistible tale.” —The Washington Post Book World“Gripping….An edge-of-the-seat read.” —People DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY“[Larson] relentlessly fuses history and entertainment to give this nonfiction book the dramatic effect of a novel….a dynamic, enveloping book.”—The New York Times“A hugely engrossing chronicle of events public and private. In the Garden of Beasts is an amazing book. It is a nonfiction account that reads with the ease and entertainment of a good novel. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. When I was reading it, I was engrossed.Larson uses letters, journals and papers to tell the story of William Dodd, Ambassador to Germany in the thirties, of his daughter (Martha), and of Hitler's rise viewed through their eyes. Martha, socialite and party to many romantic escapades, found herself in a position to garner information that the Ambassador couldn't know and become the center of several intrigues herself. As for Ambassador Dodd, as he became more disillusioned with (and ultimately more fully aware of) Hitler's Germany, he became more of an outcast with the "in crowd" of the State Department, creating an entirely different, but important, conspiracy of sorts.Despite knowing the ultimate outcome of the Dodds' adventure, In the Garden of Beasts is still a page turner and thoroughly fascinating. It was with reluctance that I turned the last page, and said good bye to these people that had consumed my mind so completely.Larson's apparently has the ability to write a biographical account in such a way that makes it more enjoyable than most fiction. (I've not read The Devil in the White City, but that has been moved to the top of my to-read list.) I can not recommend this enough, regardless of your interest in the subject. My initial interest was not high, but I came away with new understanding and knowledge of the time period, US and German politics, and ultimately, human nature. In the Garden of Beasts is a must read.

Larson focuses on the first two years of the Nazi era in Germany, 1933-1934, when Chicago history professor William Dodd went to Berlin to serve as US ambassador. He was accompanied by his family, including his daughter Martha, who was 24 years old when they arrived in Germany.Martha Dodd dated a series of dangerous boyfriends in Berlin, including a Soviet spy and the chief of the Gestapo secret police. In what may be the most ill-advised matchmaking attempt in world history, a mutual friend even tried to set her up with Adolf Hitler himself, although it never progressed beyond one brief meeting between the German leader and the American ambassador's daughter.Foreign Service Officers may find the description of the 1930s-era Foreign Service to be of interest. Half-jokingly described as the "Pretty Good Club," the Foreign Service was then comprised mostly of wealthy men who were able to spend well beyond their government salaries while overseas. Anti-Semitic attitudes were both common and socially acceptable in the State Department of that era, which helps explain why America failed so miserably to accept Jewish refugees from Germany during the 1930s.Wisconsin residents and University of Wisconsin alumni may be interested in a supporting character in the book, Milwaukee native and UW-Madison alumna Mildred Fish Harnack. She had moved to Germany and was a friend of the Dodd family in Berlin. Although she was an American citizen, she stayed in Germany after the war began, organized a anti-Nazi resistance group, and was executed by the guillotine on Hitler's orders in 1943. The University of Wisconsin Law School has an annual human rights lecture series named in her honor.

An interesting angle on the history of Hitler's early years in power in Berlin. While her father is serving as Roosevelt's ambassador to Germany, Martha Dodd cavorted with Nazis, journalists, and foreign diplomats, including one from the USSR with whom she developed an intense on-again-off-again relationship. Both she and Ambassador Dodd were somewhat slow to recognize the full extent of the horrors being committed by the emerging Nazi regime. Dodd, an academic by nature who was far from Roosevelt's first choice for the job, finally began sounding the alarm and recommending preemptive action to avoid another world war but was seen as a Casandra by the old-boys club in the Department of State. Ultimately, of course, his warnings were proven to be correct but by then the Nazi war machine was too powerful to stop short of all-out war. Larson, has a knack for bringing history alive. Readable and Entertaining.

Larson does an excellent job transporting the reader back to the early days of the Third Reich, and the increasingly hostile and menacing climate which was developing for anyone not a member of the favored Aryan class, and of course, particularly the Jewish people who were subjected to ever more indignities. The book focuses on the idealistic new American ambassador and his family, who initially are determined to think the best of Hitler and Germany in general, certain that the Hitler and his various lieutenants are merely full of patriotic zeal and the desire to restore Germany as a healthy thriving country following the deprivations of WWI. Much time is spent on seeing the evolving situation through the eyes of the Ambassador's daughter as her understanding develops as a consequence of her various relationships and liaisons. This is for me, the book's primary flaw. Too much of the story is developed around the perspective of a relatively uneducated and unsophisticated dilettante who is mostly interested in her next date, and stubbornly persists in seeing the Nazis as well intentioned young men. This makes the book a more fun read in many ways, but it glosses over the underlying issues and events that lead to the rise of Hitler and the horror of Nazi Germany. It does, however, make it easier to understand how so many bought into the idea, that this was just a man tapping into nationalist, patriotic fervor, and not someone who would be allowed to develop into one of the most monstrous public figures in the history of mankind. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in Nazi Germany and the ominous and portentous early days of Hitler's rise. There are modern parallels to be drawn as well.

good gift

Gaining knowledge is never to be underestimated. Thanks to the todays technician series i am able to continue on the path to greatness. The book was used, but looked brand new when it arrived. Thanks.

I'll start off this way, I bought this set of books for a Junior College Automotive Class, and read it before the class sesion even started - and I don't like to read. This is not a dry manual filled with borring specifications. This is an easy to read common sense book.It covers the lingo we as car owners need to speak to get the right parts and service for our vehicles. (The glossary is in English and in Spanish). It breaks up the automobile into it's separate systems, and describes them in detail. It prepares you for some fundamental troubleshooting.Buy it!

This book was very relevant to the times we are in. As the Head of HR for a rapidly growing start up, I could not find this book more appropriate for the challenges that we are facing. It is something that we are asking our new hires to read as part of their onboarding process to keep them motivated. Everyone should read this, but it would also be perfect for those pursuing MBAs. It has the perfect blend of old and new examples, and it was so easy to read.

What a great book! Although written for managers, it's a great read for anyone looking to learn about past and present competitive markets. It's full of interesting case studies and stories on how the world’s most recognizable and beloved brands had to fight their way to make it where they are today. Certainly an eye-opener, and a fun and informative title!

The book keeps on sharing history and tried to proof about the Leap is possible for mass production and automation ....

Howard Yu quotes one of the most important passages in Joseph Schumpeter's classic, Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy (1942): "The opening up of new markets, foreign or domestic...illustrate the same process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one. The process of Creative Destruction is the essential fact about capitalism."I am among those who are convinced that the global marketplace today is more volatile, more uncertain, more complex, and more Ambiguous that any prior time that we can remember. "The only way to prosper under such conditions over long periods of time is to [begin italics] leap: Pioneers must move across knowledge disciplines, to leverage or create new knowledge on how a product is made or delivered. Absent such efforts, latecomers will always catch up."Yu suggests that getting ready to leap requires a different way of thinking about and leading the business. The preparation process should be guided and informed by these five fundamental principles:1. Understand your firm's foundational knowledge and its trajectory.2. Acquire and cultivate new knowledge disciplines.3. Leverage seismic shifts.4. Experiment to gain evidence.5. Dive deep into execution.I commend Yu on his brilliant use of mini-case studies that examine effective initiatives that bring these principles to life. More specifically, he focuses on exemplars that include Community Ground/Breaking Group (154-161), DARPA (Pages 104-118), John Deere (212-217), Novartis (66-78), Procter & Gamble (51-61 and 66-67), and Steinway & Sons (17-39). When to leap?"Listening to the right signals [while ignoring the noise] requires patience and discipline. Seizing a window of opportunity, which means not necessarily being the first mover but the first to get it right, takes courage and determination. To leap successfully is to master these two seemingly contradictory abilities. The discipline to wait and the determination to drive, in balanced combination, often pay off handsomely. Cultivating this paradoxical ability at the individual and organizational levels" is an ongoing process, not an isolated achievement. As I worked my way through Howard Yu's final chapter, I was again reminded of three observations. First, from Helen Keller: "Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." The next from Steven Wright: "The early bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese." And the third from the Gambler: "You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em," etc. All are sensible but not all leaps are sensible. Some are impulsive, others are retaliatory, and still others are dumb as a 100 chickens.Howard Yu is a staunch and eloquent, indeed compelling advocate of leaps that have a degree of risk, yes, but are rigorously considered to the extent a given situation allows. The key point is that some decisions -- albeit less than perfect -- must be made in rapid response to an unexpected development. Organizations are only as resilient as their leaders are. This book is timely and, in my opinion, will prove timeless in a global marketplace in which change really is the only constant. Bravo!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I didn’t want to skip a thought. I really appreciated the depth of the case studies as they provided me with so many examples; from different periods of time, different geographic locations and different industries in different environments. I appreciated the skill with which Mr Yu crafted his perspective, based on in-depth research, and linked it to the case studies. He created tension in some places and then released it, by detailing what today’s leaders need to do in order not to sink into obscurity. The read was challenging and inspiring. He outlines how, "These principles both explain and predict how companies can prosper when labour, information and money move easily, cheaply and almost instantaneously.” and argues, “ The only way to prosper under these conditions over long periods is to leap.”Leaping requires we move out of our comfort zones, it requires that we get our heads around the fact that what we will be doing in the future is going to look very different to what we are doing now, and that leaders of organisations have very specific, very active roles in driving this change. “They have to personally intervene at critical junctures, wielding the power to overcome specific barriers.” It requires leaders to do, not just think.Mr Hu is clear that this is the way to stay ahead of copycats, to “forge ahead’ rather than ‘refining what has already been.” We must ‘leverage the seismic shifts”There are some hard truths for the reader to swallow, including detailed accounts of where world-class businesses have tripped and fallen, eg: assuming the present health of your company will continue indefinitely, or, that what made us successful in our early days will guide us to create the capabilities we will need going forward. He also quotes research from experts such as Professor Amar Bhide, ‘Most of the startups failed, as expected, but an overwhelming 93% of those that succeed had to abandon their original strategies because they were proven unviable. ...successful startups almost always have to do something different than what they promised their investors.”So we need to learn from failures and recognise the importance of doing something different, significantly different, from where we start (or where we are right now) is it is more than likely going to be the key to our future successIn the end, I did feel upbeat and that I can do this, I can leap! No wait, let me rephrase that; to succeed for any length of time, in a turbulent business environment, I WILL HAVE to leap. And it’s my ’role, the leadership role, to make it happen. With thanks to Perseus Books, the author and NetGalley for my free copy to review.

Neurons that fire together wire together, this book wired my brain with highly relevant innovation leap examples companies should be aware to win. Leap is a historical account, a memoir of Western pioneers that will give any company the knowledge it needs for competitive growth. Some of these pioneers failed, some survived, others prospered. It’s also a playbook for the future. Any organization—large or small—has a set of traditional strengths and important products that have helped build it into what it is today. There is no perfect moment to innovate but Howard Yu shows us how.

Considering I was a Psych major about the time this book first made an impact, I don't know how I missed it. I mean, 12 million (!) copies in print. What a phenomena! The first thing that occurred as I read of his time in the concentration camps and the loss of his family members, including his pregnant wife was how he, or anyone else could survive such conditions and to take stock of my own blessings. One major point of the book is the idea that even during extreme suffering, life has meaning and a focus towards the future, even a bleak one can permit one to endure the bleakest of circumstance. This book is an interesting contrast to the Freudian approach as his program (called logotherapy) tends to focus on the future rather than the past; adjusts behavior and attitude; and tends to focus on a shorter term approach. It has many characteristics of cognitive behavioral therapy a more modern approach which tends to avoid the use of drugs to modify behavior. A most worthy read. It packs a lot of power in a fairly short read.

If you're in pain, read this book. If you're scared, read this book. If you are lost, read this book. If you are happy, read this book. If you have time, read this book. If you don't have time, read this book. Read this book, read this book."We who lived in the concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms--to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

I read this in college and ordered again to read some 40 years later. Frankl relates the severe conditions in the concentration camp. Those without any purpose seemed to perish. Those that had developed purpose and meaning to the harsh conditions got out of bed every morning to face another unbearable day. this book is a classic. anything less than 5 stars would be a reflection on me.

When I first started reading Man's Search.... last week I was repulsed by the descriptions of the concentration camp experiences. How could humans be like that? Even though of course we have known about them for 70 years now, it is horrible to read about them. My temptation was to put the book aside, I told someone it was "depressing." But how glad I am that I persevered (because it was our Book Club choice this month.) Ultimately, this book is a hopeful paen to humankind's ability to rise above all suffering, to find our own individual meaning to our existence and in that way make sense of why we are in the world and why we should continue in it, doing our very best. This book transcends religion even as I recognize so much of what Frankl writes in my own religious beliefs.Truly a must read for people as soon as they are old enough to understand it--perhaps mid teenage years.

Viktor Frankl, an Austrian Jew, studied neurology and psychiatry with a focus on depression and suicide years before being arrested and deported by the Nazis in 1942. He defied odds by lasting three years in concentration camps. He lost his parents, brother, and his wife, who was pregnant. As doctors were in short supply in the camps, Frankl, after working as a slave laborer for some time, was able to work as a physician until his liberation. As his work prior to his time in the concentration camps had focused on depression and the prevention of suicide, he turned his focus to his own survival story and the people with whom he interacted in the camps. Why did some survive and others perish? What gave people the will to live? What gives life meaning? Some favorite moments:•Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning.•Frankl saw three possible sources for meaning: in work (doing something significant), in love (caring for another person) and in courage during difficult times. Suffering in and of itself is meaningless; we give our suffering meaning by the way in which we respond to it.•Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, you freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you.•The truth- that love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and believe have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.•Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self. Whether or not he is actually present, whether or not he is still alive at all, ceases somehow to be of importance.•From all this we may learn that there are two races of men in this world, but only these two - the "race" of the decent man and the "race" of the indecent man. Both are found everywhere; they penetrate into all groups of society. No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people. In this sense, no group is of "pure race" - and therefore one occasionally found a decent fellow among the camp guards.•Now, being free, they thought they could use their freedom licentiously and ruthlessly. The only thing that had changed for them was the they were now the oppressors instead of the oppressed...Only slowly could these men be guided back to the commonplace truth that no one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them.•"Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now."•So, let us be alert - alert in a twofold sense: Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake.Highly recommend.

For some reason, I put off reading this book for many years. I had read excerpts that made me want to read it, but getting the book and sitting down to read it just seemed to not fit into my plans. I am so glad I finally read it. For about twenty years, I read many stories about World War Two. I wanted to know why no one helped the Jews. The most gratifying part of the reading was to find that there were many people that endangered their own lives and the lives of their families in order to hide Jews from the Germans. So, to follow a Jew into the concentration camps and read his observations was enlightening. Some survived the camps while others died. They all ate the same food, suffered the same diseases, performed the same work, and suffered the freezing temperatures. Why did some survive? That is what Victor Frankl wanted to know and with close observation, he saw the pattern that gave meaning to life and helped some survive while others gave up and died. His ideas are applicable to modern day problems as well as his methods.

Had to use this book for a college course. I have used many of the different Adobe program books and I have to say this was my least favorite. What bothered me the most is the HTML and CSS that is provided for your lesson have many errors when you try to validate them using the W3schools validation services. It's frustrating and disappointing as a beginner to not be able to have a properly validated page and to not know exactly how to correct some of the errors. Hoping the authors will take the time to correct some of these errors for future students in the next edition.

The classroom in a book series are excellent. If you wanted to simply teach yourself, this book would be perfect. But they are college level texts, They are actually used as text books in the web design program at my college, and everyone is very impressed with them. Clearly written, very easy to understand and follow along. They also provide free practice files you can download, to complete all exercises.

I am just starting out with this book. I really like the text. The steps are very clear and easy to follow. I bought the Kindle version. There is a code inside the book that takes you to another digital version that is a web based, multimedia book. I can blow up the pictures as large as I want and easily follow the lesson. I take an hour a day to study. The technical writing is clear and easy to understand. The photos are bright and clear. It is one of the best digital technical training books I have ever used.

This book helps me learn Dreamweaver. I purchased it for the class I am taking in web design.

Well written, good examples, and logical, easy to follow lessons help the reader to learn to use the software. I also find myself going back and looking at specific examples when I am faced with a challenge. I very much enjoy this series of books!

An easy to follow workbook for Dreamweaver 2017

Well laid out. The only thing I wasn't interested in is the Wordpress framework so I will skip a lot of the book.

Code a website by following instructions without learning what those instructions mean so you have not learned a thing when you finish the book.
