Excellent book and easy to reach Swift resource, runs through the majority and standard Swift api capabilities, but gives a little extra explanation that adds an extra perspective over the Swift book apple has.

I don’t like this book very much. To my taste, the examples and explanations aren’t enough simple, focused and clear as I would like to. The good professor makes a hard theme looks no so hard, and remark only the essentials. In at least one chapter, he uses code that he said “is out of this book scope” and do not explains it, so why he uses it? I don’t finish the reading, it bothers me.

It is a great book if you want to pickup swift from scratch, not so great if you really want to master it. I wish author spent more time covering more challenging topics like concurrency or memory management, instead there are pages of simple stuff with lots of unnecessary examples. Nevertheless, it is easy to read and not boring if you skip some stuff and I recommend this book beginners.

Like the author, I made a living programming in about a dozen languages and was pretty burned out until I encountered Swift. After decades of making a living designing and coding in assembly, Java, C/C++, JavaScript, PostScript, Fortran, PL/1, HyperCard, and some proprietary languages, Swift, and the author’s explanation of it, provide a breath of fresh air.The author explains the principles behind, and examples of how to use, the unique and powerful features of Swift. The chapter on protocol oriented programming is particularly helpful.Apple’s developer reference documentation is so well written and comprehensive that it is difficult to find a book that can provide additional guidance. This book does.

Good item, thank you!

I like it’s explanation of ideas and I think you will too.

Duran Duran was - and still is - my favorite band of all time, so of course I was interested in reading a book about my favorite band member. Wow. What we make up and believe happens "behind the scenes" when you are a young teenager is so not reality. John Taylor's account of his childhood years, then taking the reader through the band's beginnings, through the band's success and fame, to where he is today - all through his eyes - is absolutely wonderful. He writes with such courage, selflessness, down-to-earth raw candor that I have an entirely new type of respect for him (and the rest of the band). I truly appreciate him for writing his story and the powerful message it could bring to those "up and coming" today in the music/entertainment industry today. His words offer inspiration, hope, and of what it takes to be successful - hard work. Thank you, John, for writing your story ... I appreciate and respect you even more now at "40 something" years than I ever have. May you and your family continue to have peace and joy in your life.

My interest in Duran Duran was mainly rooted in their earlier dance tracks. They had a style that was edgier than most of the other bands from the new romantic and synth pop bands of the era. This book is the right balance between road stories, band history, personal growth and sex drugs and rock and roll. I bought it on a whim and listened to their musical output while reading it. Although Mr. Taylor made some of the same poor choices that instant fame and money brought to many of his peers, at least he owns them and there is little blame on circumstances or other people. Many of these rock royalty bios and autobiographies leave a bad taste at the end and possibly the need for a long shower! This one, however, left me feeling a great deal of respect for the author. He seems open and honest and that makes for a great read and a good life.

I don't feel compelled to write reviews very often. But I do tonight. Just turned my tablet off, having finished my kindle version of this book, got out of bed, it's close to midnight, but yes. That's how nice it was to read this book. OK, so you might say it's commercial. You might say he is just trying to milk the golden calf just a little longer. It might be true. Or not. I like to think not. I can hear a most authentic voice coming out of these pages - of a young man's rise to stardom and him getting totally lost. Oh so lost. The lovely part is this - there IS someone watching over us from above or perhaps it was Mom Jean's prayers that finally came through and helped him pull out of it all. This is a fantastic story how a lost soul finds peace. Despite of stardom. For those of us who has "followed" JT for many years, since he was plastered on our walls and up until now when we all have grey hairs and a few more wrinkles - well, it's been a blast to hear his voice coming through and getting to know him a little better in these pages. Well done John - that was a very good read.

As a teen in the 80s, I was "in love" with John Taylor and pretty much most of the band as most young girls were. I never knew about his battles and looking back, it amazes me at all that happened but how well the publicity managers did their jobs. It's hard to imagine how he could have made it through so much, and at times, I found myself asking, "how is he even still here?" Thankfully...he is and sometimes you just know that things happen for a reason that we cannot begin to understand yet our lives play out day by day to the tune of a play written out long before we drew a first breath. Yes, JT, you are right where you are meant to be and thanks for sharing your story so honestly and openly. It helps the teen in me who drove 5hrs to see your final 2016 US date in Durant realize that yes, he and the guys are human. There are songs on Paper Gods that speak to me, especially Pressure Off as I deal with my mom's third battle with a rare form of cancer that we know, ultimately, will win the war in this life, but not the next. Thanks for helping me through my own battles, and for always being there when I turn on my playlist.

This is a great read for any fan of Duran Duran and John Taylor. I preordered the download and started reading it at midnight, Pacific Time. I couldn't put it down until I HAD to go to sleep at 4 am. I finished it this afternoon.John's writing is very engaging and honest. He has a flair for getting straight to the point that is unexpected and refreshing. He also had the sense to know who would be reading this book (fans) and didn't go over what were already well known details of the early years. Instead, he brings us his eyes, his perception, and his story in a way that is brutally honest and a little more than critical of his years in addiction.Yes, as others have said, he doesn't dish down and dirty details but I'm okay with that. I thought he was too classy to go down that road and and didn't expect him to talk poorly of anyone in the band. Perhaps that's because he truly takes full responsibility for his own actions and has the compassion to know that his perspective was the only truth he knew to write about. And we learn plenty of truth about his downward spiral into cocaine, alcohol and fame addiction. It was a long ride for John. Those who had similar experiences in the early 80's might be surprised that it took him so long to get to rehab. He stayed in that bubble for a very long time. I'm glad he made it out.I was getting a bit worried when I hit 60% done and he was still in 1985. I wanted to know about the years when he left the band and worried he would completely skim over it. And he does do that just a little but somehow he covered just enough that I did not feel lacking when I was done. I have been waiting for this book since early this year so I had built up some expectations. But as John reiterates from recovery, expectations are just disappointments under construction. Go in reading this book with that in mind and you will find an excellent memoir.

Review

Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review-Gnosticism is a label applied to a collection of religious ideas that has long exerted a certain appeal to public intellectuals and controversialists, ranging from the theologian Marcion in the 2nd century AD to literary critic Harold Bloom in our time. What attracts them, I suppose, is the conviction that the highest truths are available only to a small circle of initiates -- the Greek term gnostokoi can be translated as "those who understand divine matters, knowing what the gods know."The latest to unfurl the banner of Gnosticism is John Lamb Lash, who describes the Gnostics of the ancient world as "the elite of Pagan intellectuals" and declares that their writings are "the explosive charge that can blow the institution of the Faith off its foundations, for good and all." By "the Faith," he means the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition in its entirety, and he intends to do nothing less than convert his readers into latter-day Gnostics.Lash, whose publisher describes him as "an exponent of the practice of mythology," rejects much of the contemporary scholarship on Gnosticism. For example, he dismisses the work of Princeton historian Elaine Pagels, author of The Gnostic Gospels, because she places the texts discovered at the Egyptian archeological site of Nag Hammadi within the context of early Christianity. Such an approach, he insists, "has hampered understanding of who the Gnostics were, and why they protest so vehemently against the rise of Christianity."Lash seeks to rescue Gnosticism from the dustbin of Christian history and restore it to its rightful place amid the splendors of pagan antiquity. To signal his admiration for the fecund religious imagination of paganism, he capitalizes the word "Pagan" as if it were a single faith rather than a phantasmagorical assortment of beliefs and practices. But he does point out that Gnosticism itself shouldn't be described as a religion or even a sect, if only because gnostokos was "the generic term for any person learned in divine matters." Above all, he insists that Gnosticism represents the path toward "spiritual deep ecology," symbolized by today's adherents of the Greek earth goddess Gaia. Not in His Image is perhaps best compared to Robert Graves' The White Goddess, an earlier and only slightly less eccentric effort to find and explain the linkages among the fantastic variety of religious experiences in the ancient world. Like Graves, Lash is a self-invented scholar who has read widely and thought deeply. (He is the author of Quest for the Zodiac, The Hero and The Seeker's Handbook, and the co-founder of metahistory.org with a former wife, Joanna Harcourt-Smith, who lived with Timothy Leary in the 1970s. And he is general executor of the estate of Jack Kerouac's daughter, Jan, to whom he also was once married.) He confidently issues pronouncements about what he calls "the wholesale genocide of Pagan culture" and prescriptions for the spiritual salvation of the world.Lash offers this work as a corrective to the "scholarly specialization" that condemns the Gnostics to "an obscure and uncertain place on the margins of the history of religion." Along the way, he seeks to repudiate what he sees as the pigheadedness of the academic establishment. Thus, for example, he condemns biblical scholars who do not see the continuities that Lash detects between the early Christians and the religious community at Qumran. He calls them "Zaddikites," but they are better known to the lay reader as the custodians of the Dead Sea Scrolls: "They fail to realize that the message of love in the charming miracle tales of the New Testament is a sugar coating on the bitter cyanide of Zaddikite ravings."But Lash is not concerned merely with scolding biblical scholars. His goal is to melt down the religious and philosophical ideas of antiquity and recast them as a serviceable faith for our world. In place of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition, which he links to "the religious schizophrenia of the ancient Hebrews" and which he flatly condemns as "annihilation theology," he proposes that we embrace Gnosticism and what he dubs "Gaian ethics," which he describes as "not a call to faith in God, but faith in the human species."Lash is capable of explaining the mind-bending concepts of Gnosticism and pagan mystery cults with bracing clarity and startling insight. At moments, however, he slips into a kind of New Age rant as baffling as any mystical text. "What we seek in 'Gaia theory' is a live imaginal dimension," he writes in one such passage, "not a scaffolding of cybernetic general systems cogitation." Or: "Gnosis, taken as a path of experimental mysticism, and the Sophianic vision, taken as a guiding narrative for co-evolution, can provide the spiritual dimension for deep ecology independently of the three mainstream religions derived from the Abrahamic tradition."Even he acknowledges that his book can be "a long haul and a lot to follow" and that his line of reasoning "demands exceptional concentration from the likes of us, many of whom cannot stay in the moment for three minutes at a time."Lash's arguments are often lively and entertaining, even when they aren't convincing. When he contends that Celtic civilization spread to the far corners of the ancient world -- "An apocryphal legend claims that John the Baptist was a Celt," he writes, "and Mary Magdalene was Circassian, half Celt, half Jewish" -- he is reduced to citing the film "Lawrence of Arabia" to support the proposition that "Celtic half-breeds survived in the Levant down into the early twentieth century."And when he considers what he calls the "sci-fi theology" of the ancient Gnostics, he comes uncomfortably close to affirming that the otherworldly "Archons" of Gnostic myth were authentic extraterrestrials."It is worth noting that the first great UFO wave of the twentieth century occurred in the summer and fall of 1947 when Jean Doresse was in Cairo examining the Nag Hammadi Codices, at the very moment the first Dead Sea Scrolls were found," Lash writes. "This was also the year that the CIA was founded, with the dual intention (according to UFO conspiracy buffs) to co-opt alien technology and cut a deal with the aliens, allowing them to experiment covertly on human subjects.... In fact, a CIA agent named Miles Copeland was dispatched to Damascus to examine and photograph some of the first scroll fragments to be unearthed."At one telling moment at the outset of his book, Lash describes how his life was transformed when, in early adolescence, he was reading a copy of Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra in the back seat of the family car on the way back from an orthodontist's appointment in upstate New York. "I swore to finish what Nietzsche had begun," he declares. "I vowed to think through and live out his critique of Christianity to the end."With Not in His Image he keeps that vow. But when Lash invites us to embrace the "high strangeness" of what he calls the "ET/Archon" hypothesis "with the Gnostic theory of alien intrusion" -- "the stranger it gets, the more sense it makes," he insists -- he passes wholly through the looking glass. (Jonathan Kirsch)"John Lash's Not In His Image presents a fascinating view of meanings in a sacred history long--and wrongly--suppressed. It demands profound correction of what Western civilization has been taught to call religion. It is a book that should be read by everyone."--Barbara G. Walker, author of The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, Feminist Fairy Tales, and others."This remarkable book introduces a Gnostic approach to Sophia-Gaia, the feminine wisdom principle embodied by the earth, vividly soliciting us to embrace Her revival for our survival. When the human race revered the fertility of the earth, the perennial philosophy of human kindness and good sense, as embodied in the common laws of indigenous people the world over, was equally prominent in ancient Europe. Gyncentric societies did not know the taint of sexual apartheid; mystery cults were participatory, experiential and peaceful. The erudition and mindfulness of the Pagan world have been hugely underestimated, since the onslaught of patriarchy, symbolized by the flood, destroyed a much larger civilization than we have been lead to believe. Initiated in antediluvian times with the arrival of misogynic sky gods, it took the three monotheistic religions to achieve the undoing of the sophisticated way of life of our forebears. In Gnostic terms, evil came from outside of the matrix of the earth, from another dimension or parallel universe. Entities of this parallel dimension managed to insinuate themselves into our world. It may come as a shock to many, that the Gnostics held Yahweh to be such an entity, facilitating the promotion of the perpetrator-victim ethos of Salvationism, held to be an abomination and a fateful error. John Lash presents the stark contrast between the tenets of retribution and exploitation - of the feminine , and the ethos of illuminism, with its emphasis on personal experience and communion with nature, within the framework of a vast body of knowledge, reaching from the classic authors of antiquity to present-day proponents of eco-science and eco-spirituality. A fascinating read."--Susanne G. Seiler, Gaia Media News. Basel, Switzerland"Sometimes a book changes the world. Not In His Image is such a book. It is clear, stimulating, well-researched, and sure to outrage the experts. Take it from a scientist: the 'experts' are often wrong. In fact, a hallmark of breakthroughs is that they are usually well-researched and outrage 'experts.' Science shows the importance of trusting clear thinking about direct evidence. This book is full of both. Get it. Improve not just your own life, but civilization's chances for survival." --Roger Payne, Ph.D., MacArthur Fellow, president of Ocean Alliance, author of Among Whales"John Lamb Lash's Not in His Image is a rare achievement, combining impeccable scholarship with remarkable visionary insight. In a breathtaking tour de force, the author provides a profound analysis of the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and their connections to the patriarchal system. He identifies the deep roots of the intrinsic problems of these three religions-- perpetrator-victim emphasis and salvationist ideology--and points out their relationship to the alienation and agony of modern humanity. This book is a must for everybody who is trying to understand the psychospiritual currents underlying the present global crisis." --Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of Psychology of the Future and The Cosmic Game"Not In His Image is a brilliantly subversive and provocative work of scholarship and passion that overturns everything you ever believed about Christianity. The gnostic mysteries have found a new and eloquent champion in John Lash." --Graham Hancock, author of Fingerprints of the Gods"An extraordinary and profound book. Not In His Image a blessing, and a warning that we must cease taking the terrible advice of Christianity … and that we must instead re-inhabit our own joyful, painful, mortal, beautiful bodies and fight for our lives and for the lives of those we love. This book points the way home."--Derrick Jensen, from the afterword"What we know about the divine comes by way of three paths--through the spectacle of nature, through the testimony of spiritual seekers, and through our own inner experience, as in meditation and mystical communion. John Lamb Lash seeks to renew our understanding of all three paths, and thus to renew our sense of the divine. In particular, he challenges the otherworldly creeds that have come down to us in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and to recover the earth-based religions that preceded them. Those ecologically wise religions flourished, he reminds us, not only among the native peoples of the Western Hemisphere but also in ancient Europe. By reclaiming this pagan heritage, he argues, we can begin to cure the pathologies of genocide, war, and environmental degradation that afflict the modern world." --Scott Russell Sanders, author of A Private History of Awe"Not In His Image is a stunning book. It should cause quite a furor. Lash's historical and anthropological erudition are breathtaking." --Colin Wilson, author of Atlantis and the Kingdom of the Neanderthals: 100,000 Years of Lost History and The Outsider"John Lash's heretical book is a precious act of spiritual disobedience that seeks to save the world from Salvationism. Lash opens new ground between myth and ecology, and helps one feel what the planet feels. He proposes direct knowing and moving beyond belief, and advocates animism as a proposition to test. He leaves the future open and in need of human imagination. Humanity is implicated in the future of the living planet, but Lash exercises caution when making suppositions about our role as a species. This book is learned, courageous, and full of insights. Some may find it challenging and even shocking, but it is an important read for those interested in life on earth. It is made for readers to chew on, rather than believe."--Jeremy Narby, anthropologist, author of The Cosmic Serpent, DNA and the Origins of Knowledge and Intelligence in Nature: An Inquiry into Knowledge

"What we know about the divine comes by way of three paths--through the spectacle of nature, through the testimony of spiritual seekers, and through our own inner experience, as in meditation and mystical communion. By reclaiming this pagan heritage, he argues, we can begin to cure the pathologies of genocide, war, and environmental degradation that afflict the modern world." --Scott Russell Sanders, author of A Private History of Awe "Not In His Image is a stunning book. It should cause quite a furor. Lash's historical and anthropological erudition are breathtaking." --Colin Wilson, author of Atlantis and the Kingdom of the Neanderthals: 100,000 Years of Lost History and The Outsider "John Lash's heretical book is a precious act of spiritual disobedience that seeks to save the world from Salvationism. It is made for readers to chew on, rather than believe." --Jeremy Narby, anthropologist, author of The Cosmic Serpent, DNA and the Origins of Knowledge and Intelligence in Nature: An Inquiry into Knowledge. "John Lash's Not In His Image presents a fascinating view of meanings in a sacred history long--and wrongly--suppressed. It demands profound correction of what Western civilization has been taught to call religion. It is a book that should be read by everyone." --Barbara G. Walker, author of The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, Feminist Fairy Tales, and others. "John Lamb Lash's Not in His Image is a rare achievement, combining impeccable scholarship with remarkable visionary insight. This book is a must for everybody who is trying to understand the psychospiritual currents underlying the present global crisis." --Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of Psychology of the Future and The Cosmic Game "An extraordinary and profound book. Not In His Image a blessing, and a warning that we must cease taking the terrible advice of Christianity ... and that we must instead re-inhabit our own joyful, painful, mortal, beautiful bodies and fight for our lives and for the lives of those we love. This book points the way home." --Derrick Jensen, from the afterword

this is a serious read. If you are interested in early Christianity and the way it was perceived at that time, then this will tell you. here's a hint: not so well, lol. This book has led me to some other books about the same subject. the author has written a book that can be read by just about anyone, as long as they aren't drunk on the kool aid of Christ.

Author John Lash is a careful and particularly insightful researcher with a unique perspective and voice, who has uncovered previously-hidden information coming from the deep past that is of paramount importance to humans today and has the potential to change the world for the better, if only the world at large would attend closely to it. Indeed, it may be that humanity's response to the information in Not in His Image (NIHI), and related intel propagated before and since by Lash, could be the most important key factor in determining whether humankind goes extinct or evolves into a more sustainable form - a union of intelligence, imagination and instinct expressed through animal bodies (with opposable thumbs) - that can enjoy lasting success.I would rate Not in His Image as the most potentially transformative book, on an individual level, in my personal experience, and I have read many books that have such potential and were written to promote healing and growth through deeper understanding of what makes us human and what makes society tick, including both its necessary and beneficial aspects and its very significant downsides, i.e. "the evil that men [and women] do."Of course followers of the Abahamic religions, especially Christianity, will find it difficult to read this book with an open mind, and negative reviews from that camp are understandable and somewhat predictable. In fact, Lash courageously sets himself up as a target by taking a stand for, and arguing for, a set of positions that are generally pretty far outside of the mainstream and form an overall worldview that is opposed to the mainstream in many ways. And why does he do that? It seems clear to me that he ardently believes not only that his positions are correct but that it's of vital importance to "get the message out" regarding them and to share with others the knowledge, reasoning and experiences that underlie his views. Those ends are clearly more important to him than the personal consequence of being loathed by people who take issue with his ideas and find him distasteful precisely because he presents a case for those ideas in a very persuasive and eloquent way. "He's extremely eloquent ... therefore extremely dangerous," wrote an FBI agent about Native American activist John Trudell. It's clear that some people feel the same way about Lash because he effectively demolishes the ideologies to which they're attached and with which they identify, clearly exposing those ideologies for what they really are.I think anyone approaching material such as this does well to entertain the question, "Where is mainstream thinking, and where are mainstream values and their expressions, taking us as a species? What are they permitting or inducing us to do to the biosphere, the web of life on which we depend for our own existence?" - and then to consider the absolute necessity of making profound, carefully-selected and well-understood adjustments, individually and (preferably) as a species. The individual may feel that he or she does not have the power to change society, but if individuals do not at least start changing their own lives and outlooks for the better, society surely won't change in corresponding or similar ways.No one really likes to have it pointed out that they are on a path by which they're damaging themselves and contributing to the downfall of their species (indeed, unimaginable destruction - that we don't have to imagine because it is occurring incrementally in the news day by day, so all we really have to do is pay attention); but that unpleasant exposure, and especially the exposure of root causes, is a necessary concomitant of laying the groundwork for pointing out that there is a better path, and outlining that path. (NIHI actually does all of this and more.)The "new" path really won't work, and cannot work, if polluted and deviated by mixing it with aspects the "old" path, regardless of people's tendency to overlook and justify harmful aspects of the way we've been used to doing things. That's why it is necessary to throw those harmful aspects into sharp relief. It's also worth noting that the positive evolutionary path Lash promotes is not something that he has personally invented, a completely new and fresh innovation; rather, it's a path that our ancestors were actually on, a long time ago, from which they were deviated by insidious ideology, to our harm and sorrow today. The process of deviation was so thorough and successful in its effect that the details of what was lost were buried, hidden and largely forgotten; and, to the best of my knowledge, they have not been reassembled and set forth previously in modern times with the degree of clarity found in NIHI. Certainly I don't know of any book other than the one under discussion that exposes those details and the bigger picture to which they logically add up effectively and clearly enough to induce such a profound alteration in a person's understanding of the world, its problems and their (real, feasible and uniquely effective) solutions, motivating him or her to very well-defined life-changing positive action undertaken with confidence and assurance. While those effects are definitely not guaranteed, some readers do experience them - as I know from personal experience. In short and simple terms, anyone who hasn't read this book needs to do so. It is potentially the most important and life-changing book you will ever read. I can't recommend it too highly.

I'm a voracious reader. Nearing 50 years of age, I've read thousands of books. I can honestly say, without question, this is my absolute favorite. It has changed how I live my life and how I look at everything. My lifelong search for truth was rewarded with this book. It answers so many questions, and all the pieces seem to fall into place after reading it. It is a bit "wordy", so if you are not very educated, like me, you may want to have a dictionary nearby, but I can't fault this wonderful author for being intelligent and having a large vocabulary, especially after he has written a book like this that has impacted my entire life in such a positive way. There is no way I can articulate to you guys the significance and importance of this work. All I can say is, you have to get this book.

Sophia as wisdom wants a place to take root....sophia's desire translates to what i call the greet feeling, when energy moves like a river in my body...it is a recognition tool to truth and wisdom perfectly married to humanity.. i am in supreme awe that this feeling has been articulated in such a precise fashion as presented in this book...john lash possesses great capacity as an extraordinary listener to wisdom itself and write it down for others like me to pick up one day gifted through my friend durga... and have so many huge wonderings be answered and confirmed by wisdom itself...her method of communication for me is energetic call and response...marco polo..intuition works.. imagination...another great gift...and john brilliantly distinguishes the archonic version...fantasy...and last, sophia's choice as she dreamed the earth...and her correction.. has become humanities model as the way through this big mess of a modern world... i have never responded to one of these reviews in my life, until now...my name is asha..email as follows..ropkey@gmail.com

Very easy read that introduced me to the founders of the discipline. Highly recommend for anyone interested in the field or curious about how the world connects around them.

I think that Icon Books have done a great job with their illustrated introduction series. Having a pocket and/or coffee table sized book that has a convenient format and bite-sized chunks of information was personally really helpful for someone like me who is constantly jumping between books everyday.Although it is compact and has a simplistic layout, it is filled to the brim with relevant and helpful information. Gathering together key pioneers in sociology like Marx, Mills, Bauman, Berger, Hegel, Durkheim and Foucault (to name a few...) and outlining their work, ideas and influences in concise text and eye-catching art. After an overview of those involved in the creation and nurturing of sociology, we get a straightforward and fluid insight into the theories and practices within sociology and the overall development over the course of its existence. Finally we get the modern day applications and results of sociology and a look to the future and the aims/predictions/outcomes that scientists expect to see.The content is fine, it is a perfectly decent introduction into the field of sociology. I consider the artwork/graphic content to be the standout feature of this book. The imagery adds depth and emphasises to what the author is trying to convey to the reader. Having illustrations to accompany the text definitely increases the quality of both comprehension and memory.Overall, you won't come away knowing everything you need to know from Introducing Sociology: A Graphic Guide. It is definitely a great place to start though, a platform to build your knowledge from and it is reasonable in price and easy to carry around with you if you ever need a quick reference. I recommend this book to those who want to open their mind to those around them, or those at the entry level stage of any sociology class/qualification.

Seems like a good starting point for further research. It leaves you with a lot of questions that could lead to further research.

This will give the bare minimum but still an understanding of the overarching topic of this book. It is alright.

The book had many weird explanations. But it was still interesting! If you are into sociology, I would highly recommend the read!

Book bring out good points, which causes a person to think. Inform fiends about the importance subjects within the book.

My 10 year old son loved this set. He has always struggled with reading, so I buy him any and all Minecraft books he asks for. He has started to have an opinion on authors that he likes and those he does not. This one he definitely likes. He was excited each day after school and at bedtime to get back into this story. I even caught him several times reading this series at doctor offices, in the car, etc, when he had free range to play games on his tablet. I've never seen him read so fast and so often! Now he wants all the other Minecraft books from this author. I highly recommend for the Minecrafter in your life.

Much cheaper than buying all 9 books individually. These book is huge and very heavy and my 9 year old insisted on carrying it to school every day to read during reading time. He was extremely proud of himself when he finished it and loves telling people he read a 600 page book.

My 7 year old grandson is loving this big book. He is reading it on his own every day. He digs everything Minecraft so this definitely keeps his attention. It doesn't have a bunch of pictures and it is very think so he feels like a really big boy reading and "adult" book. hahah

10 y o son who hates reading will read these books. That's good enough for me.

I liked this book because some of the things are in Minecraft but some of them are not. The story was breathtaking with anadventurous main character.

Books 1-9 come together in one big book, which was a little disappointing. But my little brother loved them!! They’re really funny and great for anyone who loves Minecraft

Dr Block has created a great cast of characters and has sent them on a cool adventure. I really enjoyed this book. I plan to give it to a friend for Christmas.

was a gift for my grandson..he loved it

The review of the Kindle Version of the Imitation of Christ, specifically TRANSLATED BY REV. WILLIAM BENHAM, DIGIBOOKS PUBLISHING, is written in the old English. If you prefer your bible translation as the King James Version, then this is the version for you. If you prefer a different translation, say NIV, or the New King James 2016 Version, then this is NOT FOR YOU. I do recognize that subtle but sometimes important differences can be had between translations, but for me, I do like the DOVER THRIFT VERSION.Amazon is NOT clear on the version of the book you are purchasing; when on the DOVER VERSION in amazon, purchases made in the paperback mode provide the specific version I wanted; but also wanting the Kindle version it showed it was available in that version. However, once you choose the Kindle version, it brings you to another screen where the cover is different. I did no pick up that subtlety initially and purchased via ebook what I though I purchased in paperback form. They should not show the Dover Version with a choice of Kindle version unless the Dover Version is what is being delivered to my Kindle. BAD AMAZON!

I've read only the first 30%. The majority of the book is do's and dont's about how to be a better person. That would ordinarily bore me but this list is surprisingly fresh and contains a number of ideas that go beyond the obvious. It's not written from a dogmatic 'do this or God will punish you' point of view. Instead it's more like 'you'll go deeper in your meditation practice if you avoid these pitfalls'.The benefit of reading it is not so much that I learn new information but that it seems to work on the reader's mind in a subtle way, so that if one opens the book feeling agitated about the details of his or her complicated life, after a chapter or two one is reminded that life is something deeper than those trivial details. After twenty minutes of reading I often forget completely whatever thought was troubling me and feel calmer and more clearly motivated to focus on what really matters in life and let everything else take its own natural course. The author makes occasional mention of a secret level of spiritual instruction that is given to only a select few. Although it's interesting to speculate about what type of instruction the author refers to, don't hope for this book to divulge too much about its contents. The author stays focused on the main topic of how to structure ones outer life to facilitate development of the inner life.

~A Carmelite Hermit/Priest once came upon me reading a copy of 'The Imitation of Christ' in the cloistered garden of the hermitage that I was living at temporarily. He sat beside me and looked at my book with a warm smile, he said "Always keep this book close to your heart, and you will never go astray". Since that day, it is rare for me to go anywhere without a well read copy of the Catholic Classic stuffed with care in my bag, and read a chapter or two every chance I get. It never gets 'old', and it's refreshing, penetrating words always "speak to me" in new and inviting ways, as if it were the first time reading that particular passage every time! I was very pleased to see these new leather zip-cover versions, as I've gone through a couple soft cover versions with daily wear and tear, in and out of the backpack, etc. There are two versions in these similar covers, two different translations by two seperate publishers. The one pictured here is my personal favorite, published by TAN, it is the same trusted and true old translation that is found in the beloved old 'Confraternity of the Precious Blood' versions.... that familiar little blue soft-covered version with stunning b&w detailed pictures to meditate upon as you read. This version was originally translated from Latin by Richard Challoner D.D., and is more true to the original translation. Though it is written in an older style of proper English, it is easy enough for most people to comprehend, and the older writing style has much artistic, poetic charm that is often times lost in some of the newer 'up-to-date' English translations. Remember, this is the second most translated and published book in history next to the Holy Bible! The other new leather zip-cover version available now looks nearly identical to this, but rather than a Cross on the front cover, it has a 'Chi Ro' design and omits the authors' name. This version, equally impressive, is put out by the Catholic Book Publishing Co., and is the same translation (edited by Clare L.Fitzpatrick) that is available in the small red hardcover version that is quite popular by the same publisher. This too is an excellent version, but the translation is much more modern and more readable by the everyday layperson, or anyone who wishes to hear this timeless wisdom in a more easily accessible version without the 'thee's, thou's, and shall's" of the aforementioned version. It's personal preference, example...first line of the TAN version = "He that followeth me, walketh not in darkness," ..... as opposed to the CBPC's version, "No one who follows Me will ever walk in darkness." (John 8:12). ~But, to be truly enlightened and touched by these timeless words of wisdom of the Spiritual Life, I reccommend buying both versions, and absorbing both as to get a better understanding of these holy and guiding words. There are those who may say that A' Kempis's writings are 'not for everyone', as most of his writings were written to give guidance to the young novitiates of his monastic order where he served as Novice Master for a time, but please do not let that turn you away from the holy and life changing power of his spiritually uplifting direction that still speaks to many today. If you have any call to any form of holiness, or just want to enhance and reinvigorate your daily spiritual life, there is no way that you can go wrong with Thomas A 'Kempis and this, his most well known and loved body of work.

A modern, elegant, and very readable translation of a 15th century masterpiece.Timely and deeply challenging, this book has stood the test of six centuries and remains a treasure of spiritual guidance. Intended especially for those in religious life, it remains useful and provocative to lay persons as well. One of its themes, the forsaking of the world for love of God, complements without contradicting the more recent spirituality of St. Josemaria Escriva, which highlights the importance of finding God in one's ordinary activities, "in the middle of the world". These two perspectives together offer much food for contemplation. The final section of "Imitation of Christ" deals with the Eucharist, and sheds light on the orthodox Catholic devotion which formed the author's faith.A must read for any Christian who wants to walk more closely to Christ.

The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America's Secret Government, by David Talbot

Review

“A Cold War villain of realpolitik whose successes and blunders were unrivaled. As framed by Talbot, Dulles’s extra-legal interventions, coups, slush funds, and ex-Nazi collaborations were as much pro-corporate as anti-Communist, more Cheneyish than Nixonian.... He’d fit right into our globalized, subcontracted, and hypersurveilled era.” (New York Magazine)“Dulles is unmasked as the backstage manipulator of US policy (foreign and domestic) from the Cold War up to his skillful defense of the highly suspect Warren Commission report. Those who scoff at conspiracy theories might have a change of mind after reading this book.” (Boston Globe, Pick of the Week)“A frightening biography of power, manipulation, and outright treason…The story of Allen Dulles and the power elite that ran Washington, D.C., following World War II is the stuff of spy fiction…All engaged American citizens should read this book and have their eyes opened.” (Kirkus, starred review)“A damning biography—of the CIA’s longest standing director—and an exposé of American politics…. One would be hard pressed to find a book that is better at evoking the strange and apocalyptic atmospherics of the early Cold War years in America.... Neither le Carré nor Graham Greene could do any better.” (Daily Beast)“Offers a portrait of a black-and-white Cold War-era world full of spy games and nuclear brinkmanship.” (Mother Jones)“This year’s best spy thriller isn’t fiction — it’s history…. By the time ‘The Devil’s Chessboard’ eventually climaxes with the events that unfolded in Dallas in 1963, Talbot’s argument that Dulles had both the power and temperament to execute such a plot is more than believable.” (Salon)“A chilling psychological depiction.... The vast surveillance system so dramatically revealed to the world by Edward Snowden could never have come to pass without the culture of fanatical secrecy and habitual lawlessness handed down by Dulles and his loyal agents.” (Justyn Dillingham, Bookslut.com)“This aptly titled book portrays Allen Dulles as the dark prince of the Cold War who manipulated the media, deceived presidents, helped stir up coups... [and might] have been involved in Kennedy’s assassination. Readers who enjoy espionage’s dark history will have a tough time putting this book down.” (Library Journal)“Essential reading, especially for readers with even a passing interest in post-WW2 U.S. foreign policy.” (CounterPunch)

As the author of "Mary's Mosaic," I believe Talbot's book will become a defining "must read" journey for the true understanding of the Cold War era in American History. As others have point out, this book, coupled with James Douglas's "JFK & The Unspeakable," should be "required reading" for every American citizen. This is as close to the "truth" as we are likely to ever get.It took me several weeks to finish this book, only because I found myself agitated and enraged to the point of having to put the book down in order to regain my composure. Having a CIA father who was seduced by Allen Dulles (or should I say allowed himself to be seduced by Allen Dulles), my own past demons again rose from the dead for one last dance. Talbot's interviews with Allen Dulles's daughter Joan were also deeply poignant. There are so many things Talbot brings to light in this book for the greater good of all.If I have any criticism, it would be that Talbot's footnotes are too superficial and structured badly. A book like this needs to be THOROUGHLY documented, sometimes with great detail. A fine example of this would be how Jim Douglas handled his footnotes for "JFK & The Unspeakable." Douglas left no ambiguity when it came to documenting critical details he presented. The other shortcoming here is that Talbot never covered one of the most important documents ever revealed by the CIA. That document (https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=6515#relPageId=2&tab=page ), signed by my own father who chaired the meeting that took place at the highest levels in the CIA on September 20, 1967, reveals unequivocally the CIA's involvement in the JFK assassination. As Jim Garrison’s challenge to the Warren Commission emerged into the national foreground in 1967, the public was unaware of what was taking place at CIA headquarters. Present at this meeting was the CIA’s Executive Director, General Counsel, Inspector General, and others, including Raymond Rocca who was James Jesus Angleton’s chief lieutenant in the office of Counterintelligence. Rocca was quoted as stating in the meeting that he felt that "Garrison would indeed obtain a conviction of [Clay] Shaw for conspiring to assassinate President Kennedy."That statement was nothing less than prima facie evidence of the CIA’s involvement in the assassination of a sitting U.S. President, which amounted to an open, documented admission by a high level CIA officer – during an internal CIA meeting – that Clay Shaw (as well as the CIA itself) was “indeed” part of the conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy. Since its release in 1998, few JFK assassination researchers have even mentioned this document, much less understood its true significance. This event, among others, will be thoroughly addressed in a new, forthcoming third edition of "Mary's Mosaic: The CIA Conspiracy to Murder John F. Kennedy, Mary Pinchot Meyer, and Their Vision for World Peace" in September 2016.Thank you David Talbot for the true understanding of who Allen Dulles really was and the destruction of the republic that he brought about !

A tremendous resource of breathtaking depth and clarity. Talbot builds on the now decades-old body of research — initiated by investigative reporters Tom Mangold (“Cold Warrior”) and David Wise (“Molehunt”), and largely developed by assassination researchers James DiEugenio and Lisa Pease (“The Assassinations”) — and adds groundbreaking new information. Talbot focusses extensively on James Jesus Angleton, the shadowy counterintelligence figure at the heart of the domestic assassinations of the 1960s, and examines the inner-workings of Dulles’ ambitious (and dastardly) plot to consolidate and control global political power. “The Devil’s Chessboard” is a startling and revelatory masterwork. In terms of easy-to-access assassination research, this book is second only to James Douglass’ “JFK and the Unspeakable.” In terms of biographies of Dulles and Angleton, two of history’s most infamous figures, this work is second to none.Note: Be wary of one-star reviews for this book. Some trace back to commissioned-review services, the same services that give five-star reviews to shady/suspicious health and beauty products. Go figure.

I am reviewing this book as I go along. It is a page turner. It's been awhile since I have read a book where I am using so many highlights to be able to go back to pertinent key words and sentences as the material is so rich. I have put down all other books I am reading for this book. It is bound to be a classic I believe. I have a feeling it will do for this subject matter much as James Douglass's 'JFK and the Unspeakable' did for pure assassination research. I was not aware of HOW deep the Dulles/Nazi connection was. The writing style is crisp and to the point. Thank you Mr. Talbot for this wonderful book.

This book, by David Talbot, is the biography of the CIA as told through a half century of misdeeds orchestrated by one man: Allen Welsh Dulles. It is a true story, as well as a truly scary story, one that should make all freedom and democracy-loving people shake in their boots. It is scary because its subtext gives living testimony to the utter fragility of our democratic way of life. Among other things it shows how easily it really is to overrun and overturn our democracy in the name of some flakey but emotionally satisfying ideology, or any well-concocted threat de jure.We see as well, how easily the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (DCI) can use secrecy, unlimited budgets and complete lack of accountability, to lure one president after another into traps designed to either blackmail them, ruin their reputations, or set them up for failure. In a worse case scenario, as apparently occurred in he case of JFK, the DCI can even have them killed. In each case, the effect is to leave the director himself in charge of all the major command posts of American power. Those that defy him, as JFK did, end up shot in the head at high noon. And then, for the next fifty years, "we the people" are led around by our noses on a wild goose chase, following a CIA-created legend designated to be the "lone nut Commie assassin pasty."Lee Harvey Oswald was a man without a motive for shooting a president he loved. Beyond having nothing better to do than to serve as a radar expert at a very sensitive U2 spy plane air base in Atsugi Japan (at the same time that E Howard Hunt just happened to also be there) learn Russian (most probably at the Monterrey language school for spies), travel to Russia (undoubtedly as a CIA dangle), marry a Russian wife and then return home just in time to kill the US president. Even a blind man can see that Lee Harvey Oswald was CIA through and through. For the next fifty years "we the people" were fed a steady diet of the "lone nut theory" concocted by Dulles himself, who continued until his death to cooly orchestrate the cover-up of an exquisitely well-executed "Executive Action" on JFK, where LHO was the designated pasty. The way the "Big Event" went down, it was all but impossible for it to have been done by anyone other than a professional hit team commissioned by an agency with the CIA's, scope, knowledge and expertise. The JFK assassination was undoubtedly a political hit carried out by the CIA, sanctioned and then paid for by Dulles' corporate paymasters. It was Allen Dulles alone, who deftly moved all the necessary pieces around the chessboard so that they were always just where they needed to be. The pasty, the shooters and their spotters, the parade route, the lack of security in the buildings along the parade rout, the lack of proper police and secret service escorts along the parade route, etc., were all moved about so that nothing would be left to chance during the "Big Event." JFK would be killed with a certainty and no CIA fingerprints would be left on the body, or any CIA DNA evidence found in the multi-decade trail of evidence. In short, here we see how through guile, lies, intimidation, murder and cover-ups, Allen Dulles became an extra-legal instrument of imperial rule, one who reigned unchallenged and unchecked above politics, morality and the laws of our land for half a century. This book is a scary read for yet another reason. Sadly it also shows how easIly the American people can be duped and lulled into following a psychopath as he abruptly pulls us by our sensitive emotional chains, cajoling and prodding us, until, like Pavlov's Dog, we learn "when not to believe our own lying eyes" and "what boogeymen to fear."For instance, at the same time that we learned about the JFK assassination through the Zapruder film, we also learned how to disavow the laws of physics by pretending that when JFK's head snapped violently back and to the left, that he actually had been shot from behind by a gun aimed at him by Lee Harvey Oswald from a sixth floor window of the Dallas Book Depository Building? It is also at this time, that we further suspended disbelief and became ever more certain that JFK's assassination had occurred just as Allen Dulles had told us it had occurred: as the work of a lone nut communist-inspired assassin, without a motive, shooting from the sixth floor window of the DBDB.In the same way that we learned to "rationalize away" the inconsistencies of "The Dulles/Warren Commission's Report," it is not too much of a stretch to suggest that we just as easily also could be trained like seals to do away with the parts of the US Constitution -- especially the parts that we do not like, or, that no longer accords with our pet ideologies or emotional issues of the day. In fact, I would argue that it would be difficult to convince anyone who would suspend the laws of physics to believe the single-bullet theory, not to give up everything that is meaningful and sacred about our democratic way of life in exchange for the next piece of ideological candy of the moment?Under the very pretext of protecting our way of life and defeating those who would stifle free-trade, undermine our democratic freedoms, usurp our liberties and otherwise undermine our way of life, we watched Mr. Dulles do exactly the opposite -- as he repeatedly used the same carefully honed bag of dirty tricks that our enemies use against us, to usurp and undermine our democracy. Yet, many still see Dulles, like they see the corrupt cross-dressing homosexual, J. Edgar Hoover, as a genuine hero of the American way of life?It seems clear from this book, that Allen Dulles did what he did to America for only one reason: to protect the interests of his rich ruling circle clients. That is, he did it for the leaders of the big corporations, the reactionary generals, the intelligence apparatus, and for the handful of men who controlled the media.Invariably these turned out to be a handful of plutocrats who consider unfettered profiteering and mindless accumulation of wealth as the nation's highest value. These are exactly the same kind of men who have ruled our country throughout American history -- from the days of pirating on the high seas, to colonial settlements, clear up to Allen Dulles himself. It is these men, cut from this same piece of cloth as the Pirates, who have now enlisted the CIA to do their bidding. They continue to promote the bankrupt ideas that unfettered profiteering and the right to mindless accumulation of wealth are among our nation's highest values. More than this, they equate the right to accumulate such obscene amounts of wealth with the very precepts of "freedom and liberty."Allen Dulles was allowed to steal our government away from us, and then to institutionalize that theft. He created a rogue institution that still lives on well after his death, one that is still engaged in the same deadly bag of dirty tricks that Dulles invented and used to the great detriment of our nation. His misdeeds went unchecked for half a century.David Talbot is right in saying that what Dulles did was to turn into a fairy tale the very idea that American power is about the "ebb and flow" of political parties, the "checks and balances" between the branches of government, and the independence of our electoral process. Allen Dulles' life rendered Lord Acton's oft repeated aphorism that "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely," into a truism for our nation and our times. As Director of the CIA, Dulles illustrated what happens when one man is allowed to use the keys to the kingdom only to protect the interests of a small ruling clique rather than to protect our democracy. The power he assumed gave him control over all the command posts of American power, and the right to operate them above the plane of the law -- and to do so with impunity. effectively crowing himself and the agency he controlled, as a one-man alternative government. This could never happen in a self-respecting self-conscious fully functioning democracy. At the top of the CIA Dulles was allowed to create an institution made in his own psychopathic image, one that quickly acquired a life of its own; and one that operated for half a century as a powerful unaccountable, secret, "deep structure shadow government."It was a shadow government with an open-ended budget large enough to allow a psychopath to engage in an infinite amount of evil and do an infinite amount of damage. And under Dulles' leadership, the CIA did indeed run amok. He not only assassinated democratically elected leaders around the world, but he also consistently distorted and undermined institutions within the U.S. He committed all of these acts, not to defend US interests, but solely to protect the narrow corporate interests of a handful of billionaires.Dulles succeeded twice in putting JFK into his trick bag, setting him up to fail in both the Cuban Missile crisis and the Bay of Pigs incident. However, after barely escaping triggering a nuclear holocaust in the Cuban Missile Crisis, JFK knew how high the stakes were, and balked when Dulles tried a third time to lead him astray in Vietnam. Instead of acquiescing to Dulles and his like-minded military chiefs, JFK struck back and turned the tables on them. He fired Dulles and the upper tier of the clock tower in Langley, promising to further scatter the agency into the wind. But Dulles, ever the wily cold warrior, regrouped and set up his own government in exile at his Q street house in Georgetown, where in retirement he continued CIA business as usual -- only this time the project at hand had his much hated nemesis JFK, squarely in its crosshairs.Little did JFK know that by firing Dulles, he had lit the fuse to a time bomb that would literally blow up in his face two years later at high-noon in Dallas. JFK had crossed swords with the wrong man: the geopolitical chess master of the free world, a man, who along with his brother, Foster, had enforced the corporate imperial will of the handful of amoral and evil men that represented the real seat of power in the US.And while the author falls just short of pinning the JFK assassination donkey's tail on Dulles, he does build a fence of circumstantial evidence so tightly around the necks of the Dulles led cabal, that there is no way for them to escape. And when all of the lies, perjured testimonies, falsified evidence, intimidated witnesses and locked away documents are carefully examined, there will be no jury in the known universe that will not convict Dulles of being the executive mastermind behind the cabal of rich men who murdered JFK and RFK.In one of the most sober and eye-opening reads of the year, David Talbot has re-played and re-examined the games played on the Devil's chessboard. Each move has been studied in-depth. He leaves no moves and no stratagems unexamined. And in the end, what he comes up with is what all Americans have been thinking over the last fifty years. We ask ourselves the same questions that perplexed Presidents Eisenhower and Harry Truman just as the CIA was being established: Just what kind of a Frankenstein monster did the National Security Act of 1947 create? And now that we have seen the devil's handiwork, is it not time for "we the people" to do away with this monster? Five stars
