I'm that lady at the office who always has some animal-themed calendar hanging in her cubicle each year. You know the type. I always have the 365 Cats Page-A-Day that I receive in my Christmas stocking; in addition to that it's the free ASPCA or Humane Society calendar given to me as a premium for my regular donations. More often it's a combination of both. While they're very reflective of the animal lover that I am, they don't really make much of an artistic statement.That's why I was so pleased to get this calendar featuring the work of Shepard Fairey (the "street" artist of Obama HOPE poster fame). Not only is each piece bold and eye-catching, but they also make a pretty overt statement about the soul-crushing pressure to conform and obey, as well as the importance of individuality, resistance and the questioning of authority. I love that he crosses a quasi-1960's aesthetic with Soviet-era poster art to create his unique, recognizable and contemporary style.I know I have my reputation as the office crazy cat lady to uphold but the images on this calendar also speak to a big part of who I am - the late model hippie and proto-punk who bummed around the East Village in the 1980's. And I guess everyone in my office will finally be getting to know her in 2019.Of course, there'll still always be room for my beloved 365 Cats Page-A-Day.
This is a striking conversation starter of a calendar.The paper is slightly glossy, but the dates are easy to read, and easy to write on. The months are boldly displayed, and really everything about this poster is quite dramatic and bold. Some of the images are very overtly left-wing, some take a few minutes to really grasp the message. Some of the art is pretty good, some is very cliche' and at the bumper sticker level. In particular, the captions are too on-the-nose with concepts everyone agrees with. At least in my opinion. Some of the months are just captions, or mostly captions, but some are really striking art that I catch myself looking at over and over to think about.Definitely a great gift for someone who is a big fan of that HOPE poster, or really anyone who is passionate about their progressive ideals. As for art fans in and of themselves, this is poor. I'm giving it a good rating because it's a high quality paper, very crisp and clear graphics, and the art is what it's advertised as being...
