I always find it disappointing to discover that these books are frequently the exact thing they claim NOT to be - guides to the same old tourist traps and well-trodden ground. This book, despite its name, is a summary guide to the best known sites in the state. And it's not a particularly good one either. First, its coverage is quite thin, trying to present a diverse state like West Virginia in about 200 pages. Many things are left out, such as Moorefield and Old Fields in the Potomac Highlands.Second, there a quite a few factual errors throughout. For example, the author labels (incorrectly) both Bluefield and Davis as the highest-elevation incorporated towns east of the Mississippi. In fact, neither of them are, the title going to Highlands, North Carolina. Construction dates for important landmarks are most likely to be just plain wrong, and many sites are mentioned with only the most anecdotal of contexts. The book is organized by geographic region, and is written in narrative format as each site is discussed within the text. The only real "off the beaten path" items are highlighted in well-chosen side bars. The lodging and dining listings are few, but the ones included are good. No lodging and dining feedback is included. Maps are simple and regional, without in-town detail. There are no photographs. For a state that attracts so many tourists and has so much to offer, there are just no really good guidebooks out there. The best, in this reader's humble opinion, is Adkins' Explorer's Guide, but even that one has holes. Buy the Adkins guide if you must have one.
but not as much as I expected. It does show a lot of different places so it's a nice read and can give you some vacation ideas. Could be organized into smaller regions to make it easier to pinpoint places of interest in different areas. As it is the regions are large--too large to hit many different sights on a "day trip". A good vacation planner though. Also wish it included more details on hiking paths, but that's only a personal wish. It's a good value if you don't have to pay the full retail price.
I live just north of Morgantown, had a midlife crisis, and bought a Miata. We often take weekend road trips into WVA, and this book makes the trips a lot more interesting. We've found great places to visit, eat, hike, shop, etc. and have a lot more trips planned.I like how the book is divided according to geographic areas. If you are planning even one day trip to West Virginia, you should buy this book!
Very informative and interesting
I've purchased several books on WVa. This one has so many things wrong in it. I would not buy it.
I was impressed with all the info in the book not found at AAA or brochures sent to me from the various areas.
