#10,354 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Amazing that this was released in 1965, but so very relevant today. Because it was written back then, it is actually a more interesting story because the President at that time was viewed as almost infallible. Since this book was published we've had President Reagan, who at the very end of his Presidency was already suffering the effects of Alzheimers. This book offers a compelling narrative and the collateral damage that occurs when the Commander in Chief becomes unstable. It's easy to see why this was a best seller in 1965. The book presents the issues that would arise when the sanity of the Commander in Chief is questioned. Very enjoyable, yet thought provoking book.

With no offense meant to the author's family, the recent New York Times article which describes this 1960s-era book as a clairvoyant vision of the Trump Administration is not at all accurate. I would say there is about a 1% similarity between the two characters, and - unlike the inferences by the newspaper about a shocking plot that depicts the dangers of a President run amok - the plot is boringly simple. A scandal-plagued Senator and a cabinet official argue that the President is insane due to some displays of temper and a desire to tape his believed enemies, and that literally is the extent of the plot, which is embarrassingly repeated again and again as some sort of colossal epic. The actual Nixon or Clinton terms have many multiple times the excitement of this pedantic plot and its astonishingly parochial ending. In its apparent quest to find Trump-like negative irony in everything, their recommendation widely misses the mark and wastes $11 of your money and 60 minutes (that's all it takes as a skim) of your reading time in the process.

I don't know what to say about this book without giving away the plot. The book was written in the 1960's and republished very recently because the theme is of import today. This novel is about a President of the U.S. who is thought to have become psychotic with paranoid delusions. The book is as much about the players surrounding the president and who has the strength to deal with the threat posed, competently? I read Night of Camp David from cover to cover. Its astonishingly good and well-written...plus it helped me understand the threat to our democratic republic posed by our current occupant in the White House, and to assess what the other powers-that-be in Washington are doing that is patriotic.....or unpatriotic.

This re-released novel is getting attention due to its timeliness with the current political situation (November 2018). President Trump has created much of the same alarm as the protagonist Senator in this novel experiences.. While the author of “Camp David” creates a believable scenario in the tension of the discovery that the President is mentally disturbed and showing paranoia, the author closes with the president uncharacteristicly showing contriteness and resigning. If only.

Night of Camp David by Fletcher KnebelJames (Jim) McVeagh, the 38 y/o junior Senator from Iowa, is summoned by President Mark Hollenbach to Camp David late one evening to inform him that he, the president, is considering McVeagh as his choice to run as Vice-President in the upcoming general election. Apparently, Patrick O'Malley, the current VP has been caught in a bribery scandal and Hollenbach is going to ask for the VP's resignation.McVeagh is troubled by the fact that the meeting was late at night, held in total darkness, and Hollenbach is accusing the VP of being a member of a network of men who are on a conspiracy to bring the president down.A sense of patriotism invades McVeagh, who thinks the President has lost his mind and it's up to him to bring the President down before he has a summit with the Russian Premier. China has recently developed the atomic bomb and Hollenbach is trying to react with the Russians. Fearing a nuclear catastrophe, McVeagh recruits his assistant, Roger (Flip) Carlson to start digging on the President's past under the pretense that he wants to write a biography of the Commander in Chief. This raises alarms with the Secret Service and as McVeagh goes further into investigating the President, he becomes "a security threat" and is accused of being a deranged person himself. How does one handle with a mentally impaired President? How does one convince members of the cabinet that the 25th amendment needs to be invoked? How can a vice president who's under investigation assume the leadership of the country? These are all questions that the author poses but does not really answer.Narrated from the third person point of view, Mr. Knebel creates a scenario in 1965 that has reverberations to the current occupant on our White House. I thought the book was a fascinating nice and easy read but it posed more questions than it actually answered: "...nobody in this country can tell the president of the United States that his mind is sick." p. 330.
