Review

"Long-standing series about controversial contemporary issues continue(s) to turn out exceptional titles. Greenhaven's Opposing Viewpoints presents multiple perspectives on hot topics such as abortion, the death penalty, and censorship through excerpts from primary materials ranging from speeches to cartoons." -- Booklist (October 2001) (Booklist 20011015)"The format and approach are identical to other titles in the series; both sides of a particular issue are explored in depth. Each essay is prefaced by questions that will help students focus their reading and each chapter concludes with suggestions for further reading and research. Students will find the articles helpful in examining these controversial and often emotional issues." -- School Library Journal (August 2002) (School Library Journal 20020801)"As usual for books in this series, there are plenty of follow-up sources for students to pursue." -- Booklist (June 2002) (Booklist 20020615)"The language is understandable but not simplistic, the pieces are clearly titles for easy identification, and a few cartoons and charts break up the dense text. This unbiased collection is a welcome resource for researchers and debaters." -- School Library Journal (June 2002) (School Library Journal 20020601)"Written by educators, scientists, journalists, doctors, veterinarians, members of the clergy and advocates. This excellent volume will elicit group discussion and help to develop critical thinking and analysis of sensitive issues." -- School Library Journal (May 2002) (School Library Journal 20020501)"This supplemental reader is perfect for getting students involved in discussion. The resulting debates are sure to reinforce any primary readings and will breathe life into any standard lecture oriented course. This supplement is a useful tool for instructors to get students involved." -- Crime and Justive International (May 2002) (UNKNOWN 20020501)"As always in the Opposing Viewpoints series, there are voices from many sides of the debate." -- Booklist (April 2002) (Booklist 20020415)"Most present clear, fact-supported points that readers will find valuable for speeches and reports. Editorial cartoons, anectdotes, and statistics break up the essays, make reading easier. This is a well-balanced approach to the issues, argued with studied analysis rather than bind emotion." -- Booklist (April 2002) (Booklist 20020401)"This series is invaluable for preparing students for debates, classes, or research assignments. Opposing Viewpoints books help prepare high school students for critical thinking and make them aware of issues that affect society today. Recommended." -- The Book Report (March-April 2002) (Book Report 20020401)"Most useful in schools with religion and/or philosophy courses, but should also appeal to general readers." -- School Library Journal (April 2002) (School Library Journal 20020401)

I liked this better when I read the library book. After owning it it seems like one more fanatic pushing an agenda of supplements and psychobabble. I am not convinced all the supplements recommended are safe or beneficial and they can be very expensive. I kept wondering if he did not have ownership in the companies whose products he was promoting.

This is a book I have recommended to several people. Why? Well, I can't really break it all down here, but basically if you want an easy to understand readable book that offers a quiz to help you figure out which behaviors you see in yourself or another - this is it - and it then points you to what you can do via supplements and diet to modify and change your behavior by literally changing you brain's behavior. See? That sounds way, way more complicated than this book really is, so all I can tell you is read it.If you've ever thought, "I'd love to change X about myself but I can't seem to stop Y and Z!" this can help. If you've ever thought, "I can't figure out my child's behavior and I'm at my wits end!" This can help. If you want to learn how to change your brain - it's like... if your car's not running right because you've been putting the wrong kind of gas in it, that's this book. Just read it.Since it's hard to explain, I'd advise looking up Dr. Amen on YouTube and Google and dig into what he has to say. This was televised on PBS, so I'm sure you can find it. Then when your interest is piqued, get the book for reference. It can really help to make effective changes in your life or the life of someone you love.

My wife and I watched his pbs special and quickly wanted to follow it up with a joint reading of his book. We expected to get more detailed information about what to eat early on with some recipes thrown in to give us a real world idea. The information provided is interesting, and as some reviews mention it does kinda repeat. But when it comes down to actually putting this into practice, i hoped for some more help from the book. At the end of the nutriotion section there is a link for a shopping list and recipes ,"perfect", i thought, just what i hoped for. But no, the link is dead. I googled it and found nothing. In his appendix he says to visit the "CHange your brain, change your body" site for more info but its only a video and a tour calendar. THERE IS ZERO HELP WITHOUT PAYING FOR MORE. i've looked for pdfs on his site, checked his blog, looked at a site map, nothing, nada, zip, zilch. This ultimately feels like a giant informercial giving you just enough to get started but not enough to succeed.

Awwww, Dr. Amen is AWESOME!! He has dedicated his life's work to help us take care of our Brains!! If you break your leg they are going to x-ray it. They do CAT scans and MRIs and look at everything that may be wrong with us. And now Dr. Daniel Amen does brain scans (he has been doing this for some time now) and do they tell a story or what??!!! It's kind of like when they showed people a black lung from smoking. Everything we do and especially everything we EAT affects our BRAIN. If you care about maintaining your brain and taking care of your body you will buy this book and anything else this great doctor is trying to teach us.

This guy has some good ideas but when I got to a part where he says you should snack all day I closed the book. You spike insulin when you constantly feed your face. I know because I used to always snack and since I now follow Dr Eric Berg I've never felt better and have lost over 25 pounds since following that no snacking advice. So, phooey on this guy.

This book really opened my mind up to changing some habits of my own to help better grow and support my brain. It is full of great knowledge that really helped me better understand why we do the things we do and how it affects our mind for our overall health.

I don't believe that I will use this cookbook very much at all. There are almost as many full-page photographs as there are recipes. The ingredient lists are very hard to read, the lines seem to run into each other, and the recipes themselves are not your everyday kind of meals but more for special occasions and take either too many ingredients or take too long to prepare.

This book is totally about making our brains better and it clearly reads like it is on the mark to help us all be better physically and in our job performance. Nutrition is everything! Everything Dr. Amen says appears to be supported by recent science. Before reading this book I had heard about concussions, but I had no idea how a whack in the head 40 or 50 years ago, which at that time was just taken in stride la-ti-dah, could have caused someone to later be so screwed up- whether by temper tantrums, lack of focus, addiction, or depression. So many people have ended up with better lives because of this book- they identified their personal deficiencies and then changed their eating and other behavior by following his vitamin and nutrition plans which are set out to deal with specific behaviors. As a result of my reading this, I am following this program gung ho and , now that they have opened clincs in Atlanta and NYC, I will definitely try to get there to have a pet scan of my brain and be analyzed. ( I have whacked it more than a few times- Once at the end of a softball practice I even got hit with a bat at full speed!) Previously thelocations of the clincis were major hauls,( California and DC) These new locations will make it easier. I wish they would open one in New England. Maybe at Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, where gambling addictions are ramapant, or, BETTER YET, at UMass Lowell at the new Health Sciences training facilities it is presently constructing. You have nothing to lose by buying this book, and every thing to gain.

Frederick Douglass: The Lion Who Wrote History

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—This picture book biography draws on Frederick Douglass's autobiographies to examine his motivations and his lasting impact on U.S. history. Using erasers and oil on board, Cooper conveys Douglass's determination, portraying him as strong and serious even as a child. The artwork depicts Douglass's growing awareness that a life outside of slavery might be possible. The events covered are well chosen to give young readers insight into the essence of his life and accomplishments. In a child-appropriate manner, the text describes beatings, but the illustrations do not show scars. When Douglass was 16, his owner realized that the teen's independent spirit might be problematic. The owner sent Douglass to another man, Edward Covey, whose mistreatment of slaves often caused them to back down. In a dramatic spread, Douglass is shown standing over Covey as the older man crouches on the ground, Douglass clearly the victor in their confrontation: an image that emphasizes the spirit that drove him to stand up for himself and other African Americans through the abolitionist movement. A time line provides context and further details about Douglass's life. VERDICT Although this title is similar in scope to Doreen Rappaport's Frederick's Journey, the two books complement each other. Recommended for collections looking to further explore Douglass's legacy.—Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA

Wonderful book for middle schoolers and up.

Great way for the little one's to learn about history.

Customer service fabulous!

The late Walter Dean Myers shows readers the upbringing of American hero, Frederick Douglass. Douglass was born a slave in Maryland. He was first taught about reading by the mistress of the house, but she soon stopped teaching him. Frederick grew up helping to care for the family who owned him and learned from the children of the family how to speak clearly. He also learned the differences between his life as a slave and their plans for happy futures. So Douglass taught himself to read. He was hired out to work in the shipyards where he met sailors who were free black men. He fell in love with a free woman and made his way North to freedom, posing as a sailor. Once free in the North, he started to speak out against slavery, becoming the legendary orator he is famous for being.Myers draws a complete picture of Douglass here. He shows readers the differences between slavery and freedom with a clarity that is vastly helpful. He doesn’t linger on the violence of slavery but it is also not lessened or ignored. He strikes just the right balance for a young audience. As the book continues, one sees Douglass grow up, learn many things and then not only head to freedom himself but argue that slavery should be abolished. There is real courage on these pages, risks taken for a real life, and an understanding that Douglass himself was an incredible individual. The illustrations by award-willing Cooper are exceptional. Done with erasers and oils on board, they have a beautiful texture to them, almost hazy with the historical significance of what they are depicting. There are images of love, others of violence, others of freedom newly found. As Douglass grows up on the pages he becomes more and more the icon visually as well.Strong and important, this picture book biography is inspiring. Appropriate for ages 7-9.

I recently read this with my almost 7 yr old, and it was a great introduction to start a conversation on slavery. Personally, I would not read it to a child much younger. The illustrations are beautiful and I really enjoyed reading it with my son.

Very pleased with this book that is in great condition. Thanks!

David Breashears co-director and leader of the Everest IMAX Filming Expedition Wren looks at everything with the eyes and ears of an intrepid reporter and a man of great integrity and disarming humor. He describes the beauty of the home countryside he traverses and introduces us to a variety of colorful characters. Most poignant are the moments on the trail when he is reminded of a powerful, dangerous, or comical moment in one of the many far-flung places he went as a foreign correspondent.Evan Thomas author of John Paul Jones: Sailor, Hero, Father of the American Navy A foreign correspondent walks out of his office at the New York Times and heads uptown -- for four hundered miles by foot. A fascinating journey with lots of adventures by a keen-eyed and honest man. You'll want to go with him.David Roberts author of Four Against the Arctic and Escape from Lucania A charming account of a long walk into retirement, this memoir gains depth and complexity as trailside incidents trigger flashbacks from Chris Wren's years as a foreign correspondent in some of the most dangerous places on Earth.Roger Rosenblatt Where Christopher Wren walks is always an exotic country, even when the terrain is the Bronx, Westchester, and Vermont. He brings a first-class foreign correspondent's eye and meditative memory to the familiar, which becomes wonderfully strange. Best of all, he brings his love of adventure to the adventure of his life. What great luck that he asked us along.

This book started out somewhat slow for me.I even questioned the author's writing ability at first. But a couple of chapters in it gained momentum and my interest. I enjoyed the book very much.

I have yet to hike the Appalachian trail, and I'm only 41, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has some wisdom well worth sharing, as well as a very candid view of his experience. I didn't feel he was in denial at all. Rather, he was realizing that 65 isn't so old, after all. This book is about the physical AND emotional journey into retirement. If you are interested in human nature as well as mother nature, chances are you will enjoy it. I gave it 5 stars to make up for some of those 2 star submissions. I've given it to my Mom, who has read it and enjoyed it and plans to give it to my sister. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes it's way to my Dad after that ... Enjoy.

A well written and interesting story. I'm glad I read it.

Liked the read. 5 stars for the trail stories, just didn't love the tangents about his (albeit impressive) life as a journalist. A noble and unique perspective about the transition from NYC professional to Vermont retiree.

Embracing retirement at the traditional age of 65, former correspondent Christopher Wren decides to leave his New York Times office (literally) and walk to his retirement home in northern Vermont. On his first day of walking he decides to visit an ATM machine, only to discover that his last several paychecks never made it into his bank account. So on this first, heralded day of his walk, he literally walks back home to his New York apartment, his wife and a home-cooked dinner. The money situation rectified, on Day Two, he makes it up to Yonkers. The adventure has begun. His roadside walking as a gutsy pedestrian in Westchester puts him at odds to an auto-filled world. In this region, sidewalks and dedicated hiking trails are few and far between. Instead, McMansions and auto-oriented travel are the norm. Wren longs for safer, open spaces but it actually takes him until Connecticut until he begins to connect with the landscape."Walking to Vermont" is as much a journey into Wren's past as an overseas correspondent as it is a journey into his future, lots of comparisons to many places are made. On this trip Wren wrestles with his vintage backpack bearing considerable weight. Listening to his body and by observing others, he increasingly lightens his load as the days and weeks go by. However, Wren is no purist. He isn't above staying at a motel or doing an overnight visit with a friend. As he moves onto the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail (which are co-extensive in the southern half of Vermont), Wren has become an expert at firing up his camp stove, a master at filtering water and a seasoned hiker. His encounters with day hikers, townspeople and through-hikers enrich this trip. It's an enjoyable journey which I enriched by following along with my collection of DeLorme maps.

One of those books you don't want to end. I think the less than quarter mile walk to a nearby strip center a challenge but this kept enthralled for the entire journey. Mr Wren doesn't just describe the rigors of trail hiking and the incentives of fellow walkers he interperces with historical information about the towns and bridges and monuments along the way. And he compares many of the rigors to experiences he has had all over the globe writing about wars and politics for the NYTimes. This is not the humor of Bill Bryson's Walk in the woods or Strayed's finding herself on the Pacific Crest trail but a readable tour of a narrow part of New England. Give it a few pages to start and you won't be disappointed.

I came across this book in the local library while waiting for my wife to choose some books. I read it over a two day period and basically couldn't put it down. It is essentially a book of contrasts in that the author walks out of Times Square, New York with all its bustle, through Harlem and out of the city to the north before entering country areas as he heads towards Vermont. Part of the book is in the City, part is on the Appalachian Trail and part is on the Vermont Long Trail. On the way he stays with friends, camps in shelters on the trail, filters his water, and then on the odd occasion stays in a nice hotel. I was interested in his observation that as soon as hikers entered the towns they would do what they needed to do such as have a good meal and then they would be anxious to be back on the trail again. Walking day after day is more like the world we evolved in rather than this artificial protective shell called civilization that we have built for ourselves. On the way there are interesting historical observations - who would have thought that George Washington would have paid $500 to have his horse rescued from a fall (and was he over charged - $500 was a lot of money in 1777).Despite the hardships on the trail you get a feeling that the author really came alive on this trip. The longest I have ever walked in one day is 20 miles and I have every admiration for the long distances covered here hiking day after day through what are often tough conditions. I have only done short hikes on the Appalachian Trail although I did a huge amount of hiking in England but whenever I look at a map of the Appalachian Trail you can see immediately that it is a tough hike with a lot of altitude changes. Wren met a lot of interesting people on the trip, many of whom were hiking alone which is probably the best way to do it.This is the kind of book that you could buy and then open up and read again five years later and I can recommend buying this one. I hope that Christopher Wren is enjoying his retirement in Vermont and that he still finds time to hike.

This is a must for anyone who loves the stunning and historical cover art of one of jazz' most legendary labels, Blue Note. There are literally hundreds of covers from some of the most acclaimed albums Blue Note ever released, and if you're anything like me you'll spend hours just flicking through it and feasting your eyes on the work of seminal designer Reid Miles, Blue Note stalwart and budding photgrapher Francis Wolff, and the many other famous or less well-known figures who played a part in creating the label's unique visual legacy, which is arguably just as important as its musical one.The beautiful full-colour photos of the covers range from 8.5" square, full-page shots, down to 3.25" squares arranged four to a page. Each album cover has its title and original catalogue number alongside, as well as the artist's name, the recording or release date, and the names of the cover designers or cover photographers. The covers are often arranged to highlight certain themes or styles that popped up over the course of the label's long historyThere are some short but informative essays at the beginning of the book on the label's founding, its major achievements and players, as well as its continuing influence today, written by the authors as well as those who were along on the ride such as Alfred Lion's wife, Ruth. There are a couple of small typos in the text, as on page 7 where it says Blue Note was founded in 1959, but in general they are very well written and lots of fun to read. At the end of the book there are also some rare and stunning black and white pictures (naturally!) of some of the artists who made Blue Note so famous. This is a book all jazz and cover art lovers will treasure forever.

This was a gift for my son who is a big fan of Blue Note records. I knew I had made a good purchase when he opened it and said, "This may have been a mistake!" He pored over the pages, pointing out the albums he had, the ones he wanted, and the ones he had been unaware of. This is a must for anyone that is a jazz fan!

This book contains over 400 Blue Note album covers from the late 40's through the early 70's. The graphic design work is iconic, with the sweet spot being Reid Miles's tenure as chief graphic designer from 1956 to the mid 60's. These covers are especially important in an era when albums are distributed piecemeal and digitally, without cover art or liner notes.Much of the Blue Note catalog has passed into the public domain in the last few years, which has enabled the recent release of incredibly inexpensive multi-CD sets of "Eight Classic Albums" by Real Gone Jazz and other other labels. Since these CD sets are very bare-bones in their packaging and presentation, it's great to be able to view the original album covers. For someone like myself, who bought many of these albums when they came out, the book generates a flood of memories. For younger folks who may be new to the music, the book evokes the time and culture of jazz in the 50's and 60's and amply displays the true definition of "cool".

Great collection. If you're looking for inspiration in the use of color, type, layout, photography, or even illustration, you'll find it in these album covers. The designers of these covers really had a unique luxury, which was having a relatively large and fixed-size canvas, in which only a small amount of information needed to be conveyed, and they used it to great effect. The covers range in mood from cool to jubilant, but are always bold.As a web designer, I see seeds of ideas for navigation, page layout and colorways. My only complaint was the small size of the book - but I see from other reviews that there are similar full-size collections as well.

If you love Blue Note Vinyl you'll love this book, since I do, I certainly do.

Love this book. Perfect “coffee table” book. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Blue Note album art, particularly from the ‘60s. Well worth the price.

Exceeded my expectations! Perfect visual representation of America's original musical art form era of Jazz! Blue Note artwork and graphics should be a touring exhibit...or museum!

Very good album with covers of the famous Blue Note studio! With stories. Good gift for jazz lovers!
