Review

"...Essex County delivers a collection of characters so genuine that by the end you'll swear they're real." —Complex, ranking Essex County as one of "The 25 Comic Books You Need To Read Before You Die""It is a wonderful, thought-provoking, lovingly-produced work of fiction. I'm still not sure that this review does the book justice. I honestly cannot recommend this book enough." —Pajiba"Lemire’s portraits of people are honest, and sad, and are full of broken dreams. All of these characters are living lives different than what they expected, and yet none of them really give up. And that is why a comic like this is so important – it is far more aspirational than a Batman story, even though no one in this book could do what Bruce Wayne does. But all of us can pick ourselves up, shake off the dust of disappointment, and try to live the best lives we can." —Multiversity Comics

Essex County is really three books in one, with common themes of hockey, isolation, and disability. Book 1: Tales From the Farm is the story of a boy growing up on his uncle's farm in the modern day. He befriends a gas-station worker who played one game with the Toronto Maple Leafs and got brain damaged from a hit in that one game. Book 2: Ghost Stories takes place in the modern day with flashbacks to his life, starting with his career as a minor-league hockey player in the 1950s, along with his brother. Book 3: The County Nurse is about the nurse from Book 2. Book 3 ties together the characters from the previous volumes. Also included are "The Essex County Boxing Club" and "The Sad and Lonely Life of Eddie Elephant Ears."I'd read Jeff Lemire before, but nothing prepared me for this. I'd read Joe Matt, Seth, and Chester Brown, but I wasn't ready for Jeff Lemire's Canada. This is really one of the comic world's masterworks, up there with Craig Thompson's Blankets and little else. The three books and the two short stories add up to over 500 pages of this wonderful volume. I can't wait to share it with my family and friends. *****

I'm going to review this series as a whole and not separately, because you cannot take one book away from the trilogy. I have never been a huge fan of graphic novels, or sports related stories in general. This trilogy is both, a graphic novel that centers around hockey, specifically the Toronto Maple Leafs, so I didn't know how engrossing it would be or if I made the right choice buying it. It was lying around my house for a while before I finally picked it up and started reading...when suddenly I was on to the second volume, then the third, then I was online looking up more of Jeff Lemire's work...Wow. What a fantastic series this turned out to be. I was fully immersed in the lives of those characters that I was surprised to get to the last page. The illustrations and artwork were so profoundly beautiful, I could feel my heart clench at a simple expression drawn on a character's face, a simple sigh, a simple bow of the head. The first book portrays the lives of Lester, a young boy who has just lost his mother to cancer, and his Uncle Ken. Lester moved in with his uncle after his mother's death, but can't seem to get along or find any common ground between them, leaving their relationship awfully strained and awkward. All of which is beautifully portrayed through the illustrations, making you breath the awkwardness and tension between them. Lester then befriends Jimmy, an older, childlike man, who runs the local gas station after suffering an injury, which ended his professional hockey career. Lester and Jimmy love to play pretend, in which Lester is a superhero out to save the world from aliens. Lester finds he can be himself around Jimmy, even sharing with him the comics he's drawn. The second book talks about two brothers Lou and Vince, primarily through a series of flashbacks that Lou is having, in which so much regret is depicted. This, for me, was the all time favourite of all three volumes. The artwork was so powerful and expressive that it almost brought me to tears. So many emotions, so many provocative moments. Jeff Lemire has outdone himself with this one. The artwork is very simple, black and white drawings, with very little dialogue. You could go pages without a single word written or spoken by any of the characters, but the illustrations alone would tell the story. The one page that really stuck in my mind is a series of panels, in which Lou and Vince and his son Jimmy are watching hockey on TV and you can tell the years passing, by the way they were aging from one panel to another and the way Jimmy was getting bigger and bigger, until you reach the last panel where it's just Lou and Vince watching Jimmy playing on TV. Absolutely brilliant portrayal of time passing, without having to spell it out to the reader that the years are, in fact, going by.Another example of the brilliance of Lemire's artwork was in the beautiful depiction of Lou meeting Vince's girlfriend for the first time. You immediately know what will happen just from their facial expressions upon meeting. You can tell. You can see it from the very beginning just by that one moment they share. And yet, when it happens, it doesn't make it any less disappointing and does not take away the shame and regret that accompanies that incident. Then there's the third volume that illustrates the life of nurse Annie Quenneville, who is going around working her shifts. The one shift the comic focuses on is Lou's, where we find out that the nurse looks after Lou, who has gone deaf, has a drinking problem and barely speaks. She also looks after her own grandmother, who has a story of her own that we end up reading about through flashbacks and memories.Beautiful novels, all connected and interconnected in the most incredibly subtle ways making it look effortless. All the stories come together, until it climaxes right where we started - with Lester and uncle Ken.Wonderful, wonderful series. I am so glad I bought it, and I feel privileged to have experienced this sort of brilliant work.

Even if you have never read a graphic novel or comic book, even if you have never read a book, please consider this wonderful, compelling collection of visually stimulating and expertly written interconnected stories about ... well,... life. It reaches deep into your soul, taps into your own experiences and imaginings, and relates them to the individuals, experiences, and legacy of small communities around the world. And all of it is so effectively delivered via simple visuals, sparse narrative, and a real-world voice.

I finished this graphic novel within one sitting. It is simply a great collection of story's that flow together perfectly to give the intricate story of a Canadian county. Everything about this story and plot is real and genuine. This story just is so great, worth buying for sure. Especially if you love comics. One down side might be the black and white, some people prefer colors but personally I think the black and white works very well with this story. Worth reading.

I am relatively new to reading this genre. I bought it for my partner but partially because of the regional location of it. I grew up in Cleveland area, but anywhere around Great Lakes region always grabs my interest. The stories were stark and moving. Sad but reality based, just life as life is for many people. Nothing extraordinary or glamorous, but the book exudes plenty of emotion. Sadness, growth, independence, love and loss, caring, regret, deception. I loved the regional feel of it, the hockey, the snow, the bird that appears throughout, and I got reminded of CKLW- the radio station I remember hearing in Cleve-back in the day. Search it on goog and it's still a station- news out of Windsor- it had been a top 40 radio station- pioneering the top 40 format back when I was a listener (mid60s-70s). I will surely check out more of Jeff Lemire's work.-thanks Jeff!

I originally heard of Lemire because of his Vertigo title, Sweet Tooth, and later on because of the New 52 title Animal Man. After falling in love with his heart wrenching, emotional style of writing, I absolutely had to give the critically acclaimed Essex County a chance. It did not disappoint. If you're a fan of Lemire, and haven't read this collection of stories yet, you are doing yourself a disservice. The characters in the three main stories, and how they are all interconnected, will have your heart strings in a tizzy. I immediately connected with Lester and his feelings of alienation. Books like this are what's helping turn comic books into a legitimate form of literature. However, I do I have to give a warning - I don't think Lemire's art is for everyone. I think it's unique and stylized, but I could very easily see some people being turned off by it.

This is the story of three young women as they embark on their college careers. They discuss their families, school, dreams, romance, and social issues (as they apply to college, not the overall world - it is neither overtly nor subversively political). The dialogue is well done and sometimes funny (amusing, but not laugh out loud). The artists' work is good, but the facial expressions are particularly excellent. It is set in England, but the experiences and emotions are universal.I will buy volume 2.

GIANT DAYS, by John Allison was, like NIMONA, born from a webcomic Allison had begun much earlier. On the pages of GIANT DAYS we find protagonists Susan Ptolemy, Esther de Groot, and Daisy Wooton hanging out together in Susan's dorm room after the events that take place in the webcomic/mini-series. The exposition is light, and honestly, it doesn't really matter much. GIANT DAYS is a slice of life comic/graphic novel that slowly explores the transition between teen to young adult as our little British girl gang runs and stumbles through their first year of college.Timing is of great importance for GIANT DAYS, because with so many short/small plots that do conclude in some fashion the larger overall narrative could quickly become boring. But Allison manages to keep readers' engaged and interested in what happens next (and what happened before, and who are these girls?!) throughout. The art for the first volume, deftly drawn by animator Lissa Treiman, also adds a sense of motion and fluidity between each panel and page, and encourages the audience to really get into these cuties.I was surprised to find that a lot of Allison's work has female protagonists at the center of the work. Although male, Allison's writing of the female experience doesn't seem contrived, 2-dimensional, or stereotypical. It's rich, varied, and layered - surprise, surprise - like real women's lives! And Allison cleverly tackles issues like romance, sexual exploration and identity, sexism, body image and body positivity, and more in a way that is thought-provoking and humorous.

I really like this book. The characters are fun, yet flawed. The art is BEAUTIFUL! It looks a little roughed, which is more than fine, because the characters poses and expressions are so expressive and detailed. The backgrounds are fleshed out impressively.Story wise, it is fun. The characters play off of each other in interesting ways. It is college drama stuff, so if you aren't a fan of such things, that would be bad. Personally, I'm generally not a fan of that genera, and feel as though this does it right, or at least differently.I guess one of the things about it is that this isn't "girl sees dude, falls in love, etc. etc." Which can be a lot of school books with a female protagonist. And while a dude is there who probably will be the protagonists boyfriend... again... he isn't the sole focus. Who knows, maybe in later volumes I will eat the words on this post, but for now the characters feel more human. and I like that.Seriously I love this art.

Giant Days wasn't at all what i thought it'd be, but it was still a fun read. A group of girls in college, friendships, late nights and feminism. It was sweet and engaging. There was also a lot of reference to pop culture. Im definitely curious and will probably continue with the series.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this based on a friend's recommendation, but I was completely blown away! The writing is clever, funny, and on point all the time, and the characters are instantly likeable. The artwork is similarly great, and matches the writing perfectly. It's a slice of life comic without pretension and I can't get enough. As soon as I finished this book I was back online ordering the second. Don't sleep on this one! It's worth every penny!

This Graphic Novel is good if you are a tween, which I am not, I bought it as I was looking for female orientated graphic Novels, and books. Some sections I did enjoy, and I think this title is awesome for teens or YA. Well done.

I'm admittedly not a hard sell, but it only took a few pages before I became heavily invested in these characters. I love them and I repeatedly want to reach into the comic and shake them until they start making better decisions

Super relatable, cute and sweet and really funny, this comic has it all! I also own the next two, it's a really great comic! Would recommend.

We follow Susan, Esther, and Daisy as they start their freshman year of college. The three girls move next to each other quickly become close friends. Throughout the graphic novel we tag along as they try to navigate and survive their first year of college. Each girl is very different and I appreciate the variety of their personalities yet how they can all be friends and really support and lookout for each other. Susan is this down to earth girl who we see get tangled in emotions over a guy. Esther appears to be this gothic chick yet she’s full of drama and adventure. Then there’s Daisy who is just a crack up and I’m leaving it to you to figure her out.The artwork is fun and very cartoonish. I love that the story and art flow so seamlessly together and more than once it had me laughing out loud. For me this graphic novel is much more character driven than the plot, but it did still raise some social, personal, and moral issues which I enjoyed. These girls are so much fun and entertaining. I can’t wait to watch them grow through this journey they’re on.

She has been featured frequently as a nutrition and cooking expert in the Kansas City media. Lisa knows first-hand the struggles of chronic illness. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 2008, chronic Lyme disease in 2012, and mycotoxin illness in 2014. Lisa has successfully utilized a Functional Medicine approach to address her illnesses head-on. Therapeutic nutrition has been one of her greatest allies on her healing path. It's Lisa's desire to empower and inspire you to become an advocate for your own health and learn how to harness the healing power of food and healthful lifestyle changes. Jill Grunewald, HNC, Integrative Nutrition and Hormone Coach, is a thyroid health and autoimmunity specialist. For nearly a decade, she has successfully guided her clients with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's to health and vitality. Since graduating from nutrition school in 2006, she has taken part in many courses lead by members of the functional medicine community. In early 2018, she'll graduate with a certificate from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, in partnership with the prestigious Institute for Functional Medicine. Jill has suffered from alopecia (autoimmune hair loss), off and on, since 1982 and in early 2008, was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. She knew that taking thyroid drugs ''for life,'' with no consideration for why her thyroid was under-functioning or what to do about her immune dysregulation was not the answer, so she immersed herself in learning everything she could about autoimmunity and hypothyroidism and how to manage these conditions with whole foods, botanicals, lifestyle modifications, and other natural therapies. Jill's Hashimoto's remains successfully managed without thyroid drugs. And unlike many with alopecia, her bald spots always grow back. In her coaching practice, Healthful Elements, Jill not only specializes in hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's, but also other autoimmune conditions (especially alopecia and Graves'), adrenal dysfunction/HPA axis dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), perimenopause/menopause, and pre-diabetes/diabetes. Jill has written for various publications, blogs, and online magazines, including Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, and Experience Life magazine and has contributed to articles in Self and Shape magazines. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, Mark, and daughter, Harriet.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book, and when it was finally released, I was not disappointed at all. So much information is in this book, and if you're like me, someone who always had questions about the best foods for my thyroid, weight loss, slow metabolism, etc., this book answers all those questions and more. And the recipes are fantastic and truly delicious! I'm so glad there is finally a fully explained thyroid book for those of us who suffer from thyroid issues and have many questions about how to best care for our thyroids. Thanks, guys for a great book. It's truly appreciated ... something I really needed. I will also be giving one away for a gift as well.

I have Hashimoto's and have been managing my thyroid issues through medication. However, I have been unable to lose the extra weight I've gained even though I've tried counting calories, intermittent fasting, extra exercise, etc. I bought this book to try something new and appreciated the format of the book with an educational half explaining how autoimmune diseases work and specificity towards thyroid issues. Additionally, the second half of the book came with great recipes I could easily incorporate. I am now finishing up my third and last week on the elimination diet explained in the book and am feeling wonderful. I feel more energetic, lighter and have gotten into a wonderful pattern of eating well and less. And I'm excited that I've already lost over 6 stubborn pounds. I'm not excessively overweight but I'm not at my ideal weight and this is the first time in five years I'm finally approaching a weight I'm happier at. I feel good again and this book helped me get there. And now I'm curious to find what foods I might be sensitive to, introducing them back one food group at a time next week.

I have been following Jill Grunewald for a few years now, one of the authors of this book and really enjoy her approach to health. She is one of the few people in the health space that I will take the time to read the newsletter or blog post that comes into my email box. I am always learning from her and because of this I purchased The Essential Thyroid Cookbook to support her work and to see what she has to say in regards to thyroid health.I purchased this book more for the information it provided on thyroid health than for the recipes. It is a really well done book all around and different from all the other thyroid books I've come across. So if you think you've read it all on thyroid health think again and check this book out as it providesa sustainable approach to eating for thyroid and immune health.

Excellent cookbook for people with Hashimoto's and thyroid disease. My favorite part is that at the end of each recipe, they give the options for autoimmune paleo and vegan readers so it makes it easy if you are doing an kind of cleanse or elimination provocation diet.

The first half of the cookbook is full of awesome & helpful info. The second half is all yummy recipes. It's so nice to have a thyroid diet plan that isn't so miserably strict. I also really appreciate the optimism and friendly tone of the authors.

What you're looking at is an incredible resource for over 30 million people suffering from the "silent epidemic": Thyroid dysfunction. This is a carefully researched book made up of condition-specific information carefully packaged in digestible sections. Jill's careful, wise voice leads the reader through the maze of Thyroid tests, what to eat and what to avoid and does some hefty myth busting when it comes to goitrogenic foods and supplementation. She gives the reader some armor to take to their doctor's appointment with factual data supported by years of experience and practice with real clients. Lisa's recipes are fun, easy, and delicious. They follow the rules of good cooking- being easy to cook and containing a few ingredients. I can't wait to incorporate these into my menu planning. This is a superb cookbook. This is an extraordinary thyroid health guide. There is no doubt that the information within this book has been carefully nurtured by people who care about women's health. The mindful creation of this book sends the message that there is hope for 30 million people struggling with Thyroid issues. Half of the book is dedicated to informing the reader about all aspects of thyroid care, and directing the reader to a wealth of information online to support even more lifestyle changes that can help to improve function of this do-it-all gland. This book is a must for Thyroid sufferers looking for the answers to their health struggles.I'm a lifelong hypothyroid patient. I feel like I finally have an accessible resource to take my health to the next level. I feel fortunate for the thorough presentation of data to support a complete lifestyle upgrade with my health at the forefront of all my lifestyle choices. Jill and Lisa are an amazing team who have surrounded themselves with the right people to send the message to the world: You have the right to ask questions of your healthcare practitioner, and you have the authority to choose better foods to support your health. Well done![I received an advance copy of this cookbook in exchange for an honest review]

I can't say enough about Jill and this book! The information in this book is a gold mine for anyone who is suffering with an autoimmune disease. I have had AU(alopecia universalis) for 4 years and have been given no hope from the plethora of doctors I have seen. I bought this book, and started the Elimination Provocation diet 2 months ago and Lo and Behold, I HAVE HAIR!!! My fingernails have gone from pitted and tearing, to strong and healthy! And as if that were not enough, I have lost 15 pounds, eating MORE food than I was before! I feel great and am taking control of my health thanks in large part to the information in this book. It is a total health game changer! As I told Jill, there will never be enough thanks!Joan Leece

Love this cookbook and the wealth of information it gives you, in easy to understand words. Some books are so scientific but they were able to relate things that made sense. I also love their approach and the recipes are great!
