My nine-year-old daughter got interested in Greek mythology after reading the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series of books by Rick Riordan. Her curiosity has led her to learn more about the different elements of Greek mythology - who were the Titans, the Gods and Goddesses, etc. I spent some time with her at our public library, trying to find books on Greek mythology that would not be too difficult or complex for her to understand, and this series of books fit the bill perfectly.Each book focuses on one Greek god or goddess and his/her role in Greek mythology. Goddess Athena's story begins with Zeus' first wife, Metis. When Zeus hears the prophecy that his offspring with Metis will one day overthrow him, he decides to destroy Metis. Unfortunately, his plans backfire and Athena is born anyway, springing from his head, fully-formed and as an adult woman. Athena will become the Goddess of Wisdom and also the Goddess of War, fighting alongside her friend, Nike. In addition, Athena is also depicted as the Goddess of Crafts and how her rivalry with Arachne resulted in Arachne being cursed to live out her life in the form of a spider.Each of the books in this series begins with a portrait chart of the major characters featured in each book, and ends with a family tree, as well as an index and additional resources. Within the book, there are also footnotes on different aspects pertaining to the mythology of a particular god or goddess, adding to the knowledge. The information is pretty basic though, which is apt considering the target audience is children, so anyone looking for an in-depth exploration needs to find other resources. On the whole, I'd recommend this series as a primer on Greek mythology for children in elementary-middle school.
