“Oil and Marble” delivers what I like best about good historical fiction. By breathing life into iconic historical figures, Ms. Storey reminds us that history didn’t just happen, but is the product of very human preferences, choices, and actions. The story itself was gracefully written, but also thoroughly entertaining. As a bonus, I also learned about Italian politics and Renaissance art. I especially appreciated the author’s knowledge of the “mechanics” of art, which gave this casual art observer better insight into the artistic process and what makes art great. I highly recommend this book.

I am not an art expert but I do have basic knowledge. When I started to read this book I was afraid that Ms. Storey would not be able to bring these artists to life for me. I was afraid it would be solely a history story with rather wooden characters. How wrong I was, I now have new insights into these two great artists, they are no longer just names but living breathing men. This is a great read and I thoroughly recommend it.

I understand the need of historical fiction writers to take creative license in their works, but the way in which Oil and Marble recounts the lives of Leonardo and Michelangelo is not a “historical fiction,” it is a “fictional history.”For example, the author, Stephanie Storey, portrays Michelangelo as an unknown (almost naive), aspiring artist when he sculpted “La Pieta,” in Rome. In actuality, at that time, he was already recognized as a genial sculptor, and one of the most prominent artists in Florence.Also, the book suggests long-lived animosity between Michelangelo, and his father (as well as his family), as a result of his desire to be an artist. The reality is that, initially, his family opposed Michelangelo’s desire to become a painter and sculptor. Eventually, however, they accepted his powerful artistic drive. In fact, it was his own father who placed Michelangelo as an intern, at age 13, under the tutelage of Ghirlandaio; a highly reknowned Florentine artist. Hence, the endless pages claiming a lifetime of abuse and rejection endured by Michelangelo at the hands of his family do not make sense, whatsoever, and are unbearable to read.Likewise, Michelangelo did not always live as a destitute artist before he sculpted the David, as the author suggests. In fact, Michelangelo was adopted by Lorenzo de’ Medici, at around 16 years of age. Thus, he lived as royalty for the next four years until the death of Lorenzo.Equally misleading is the author’s narrative of an episode about a snow statue. According to Giorgio Vasari, Michelangelo’s biographer, he created a snow statue for Piero de’ Medici. Reportedly, however, the statue inspired admiration and awe, rather than ridicule and derision, as Storey incorrectly depicted. And, unlike she stated, this was absolutely not the reason he departed from Florence.In the same vein, there are a number of inaccuracies related to Leonardo.Storey indicates that “Oil and Marble is based on twenty years of research and grounded in real history...,” but she grossly misrepresents facts, and botches Italian words and phrases.She also states, “I have taken artistic license to tell the story of these two characters who have lived in my imagination for over two decades.”In summary, if you want to read about characters imagined by the author, you will be fine; but, do not rely on this book to learn about the real history of Leonardo and Michelangelo, including their lives, interactions, motivations, etc. Pure BS.

Having very recently returned from a trip to Florence I dipped into this book, hoping it would teach me more about the city and the artists of the Renaissance. I am so glad I did. I kept returning to the twenty pictures I had taken of David and experiencing with anticipation and frustration the setbacks, the insecurity, the disrespect suffered by Michelangelo. We know he was a genius, but in this book he is shown as a young man inflamed by his passion for sculpture who is almost consumed by his desperate need to create, to be acknowledged by his family and his city, with little else in his world except the need to turn marble into immortal art. Leonardo da Vinci is shown as older, more vain, more sophisticated, more complicated and complex and finally more interesting. Also a genius, his adversary is primarily internal. He never completes any project. He is already famous and recognized as a genius and in art mad Italy, he is constantly being saved from his own follies. His greatest adversary is his own mind. He has so many ideas,he is on the one hand remote from the normal pressures of life, and, on the other, intensely lonely, competitive, and obsessed with his questions, his engineering designs, his need to conquer flight, and his own alienation from his father. The rivalry between possibly the two greatest artists of the millenium and the coincidence that their greatest masterpieces, the Mona Lisa and David, were both created at virtually the same time in the city of Florence, is the tension within this book. As well some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance are supplementary characters. Some of the story is fiction, but the two men and their art are real and the writer has brought them both to life on the page.

What can I say as a Dane being born in Copenhagen, but left in 1966 and only been back on vacation. I bought this book to refresh myself as taking a larger group of American soccer players to Copenhagen next year to play O70 soccer. The book gives a good overview of what a tourist must see in and out of Copenhagen, and that is no doubt why Kronborg (or Hamlet's) Castle 35 km North of Copenhagen was notincluded, while the excellent modern art Museum Louisiana is just close by. It is a good book for people who have to spend a few days in Copenhagen, but of course there is more to see in the rest of the country too. And I always love Loney Planet's going below the normal tourist surface.

Other books can teach you to build hangman or snake, but this thing gives you the tools to go on and make something that is completely your own while resembling video games of the 16 bit era.I know next to nothing about coding, but this book helped without being condescending. The author provides all program listings, graphic and sound resources comprising the collateral support resources that are necessary for a professional software production. Every iteration of the project development is documented line-by-line. This is not a programming tutorial, but an example a user can follow to cut-and-paste, modify, and customize. I completed this book cover-to-cover and found sufficient latitude to adapt the game to my rudimentary gaming skills. I had complete freedom to change things.The only small learning bump I encountered was transitioning between the Python IDE (Integrated Development Environment) and the Pygame Zero run-time system that actually launches the program. I completed the entire project using the newly released Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, which is very inexpensive, works great, and very easy to use. To quote the author, “If you’re using a Raspberry Pi, Python and Pygame Zero are already installed.” Windows and Macintosh take a bit of tweaking.Mission Python offers a level of depth and sophistication from a programmatic perspective. Great care has been taken to organize, comment, and name functions and variables clearly. All audio and graphic resources are clearly labeled and accessible. The project is entirely organized using Python Lists and Dictionary data structures, which are features I find when working with Internet based systems making web based applications. Learning what Mission Python teaches, explains much about how more complex systems work. That’s very good.Finally, I purchase much from Amazon directly, but when it comes to No Starch Publications, I usually buy directly from the publisher. No Starch generally offers bundles that include not only hard copy, but ALL the major soft copy formats with no DRM (Digital Rights Management). This is extremely useful with programming publications where being able to copy complex code sequences directly from the book to the an IDE is a vital learning feature.I gave a copy of Mission Python to my eleven year old grandson to play with so we could do something together during the Christmas holidays. He had the book for about 3 weeks. When we arrived, I found he was finishing chapter 5. That is a huge endorsement for this work. I had a good time too, and I’m not eleven.

Mission Python by Sean McManus is a must read for people who want to learn Python. The fact that you can create an Adventure Game while learning is an added bonus.Sean's style is clear and the book is formatted really well which is important because the book is so densely packed with information and every resource needed. The presentation is systematic but never boring.I worked through the book with my 9 and 7 year olds and although at lot of it was above them they responded well to the images and clear diagrams in the book and the book helped me understand concepts and ideas so I could then distill it for my children. They are inspired to keep learning, programming and creating games.No starch press is one of our favourite publishers for tech and science related books and they have another winner with Mission Python.

I saw this book looking at Barns and Noble and thought this would be a good hobby. I never wrote any code or knew the first thing about it. All I knew is that the game you make looked cool and it was something to do at the end of the day.This book takes you step by step learning how to create every part of a game and what each piece of code means as you input it. So far the book has left nothing out in the explanation so I feel like I'm not just writing code but understanding what it does. This book is fantastic for beginers, people wanting to refresh their python skills, or people that just want a new hobby.One of best parts to me while learning this was when I got stuck. there was an area I could not get my code to work no matter how hard I tried. after hours of getting nowhere I emailed the author thinking I would not get a reply back. After less then 24 hours he emailed me back with the solution to my problem.I'm so happy I bought this book and I honestly cant recommend this more!

I was introduced to 7 Levels book about 4 years ago. At that time, I was struggling with how I was going to build my business. I wanted a business that was like me. One that was referral based and centered on doing good for others. To this day, I have read the book 5 times and I share the book in my office to agents that want an alternative to Cold calling. There is a way, and the strategies are in this book. Even after the 5th reading, I am continuing to find REAL strategies that will help me build a successful business I can be proud of. If I could have chosen 10 stars, I would have.

OMG, this book is soooo good! The best communication book I have read. Easy read too. Be sure and take notes while you read so you don't have to go back and do it! I had originally checked the book out from the library so I could not highlight it while I read it. I loved it so much I bought it!

I read a lot of books, and most of the ones I choose to read, I love. But this book right here! This book right here though!! This book was nothing short of AMAZING! So amazing that I read it all in one day and I am getting ready to take my second pass through it to write down detailed notes. Granted, I was disappointed to learn that this was a fictitious story. I was thinking this was a memoir of an actual person the entire time up until I got to the end. The story wrapped up so perfectly that I thought to myself, there is no way this is a true story and lo and behold it wasn't. I am sure this was made clear somewhere in the beginning; I just missed it entirely.With all that aside, this book is still fantastic and incredibly relevant to business professionals of all sorts. I am moving into Real Estate and this book will be my GO TO strategy for my business. I was already selling like this back when I was a sales consultant for artificial turf. But I wasn't doing it at the level explained in the book that is loaded with genius tactics, acronyms, strategies, and more. I think I could write a book on how great this book is.My biggest love for the book is the catchphrase that I am not officially adopting to rid myself of procrastination forever. "Do It Now." I am definitely going to purchase the Do It Now wristband to remind myself that life waits for nobody. Whatever it takes to be successful, whatever needs to get done to accomplish my goals, I need to "Do it now."I am interested in the products that they have for sale on the website. The 7 Levels action guide to the book is $500! Currently, that seems a bit steep for me. But given that the information in the $10 book version on Kindle could literally make my 6 figures in Real Estate I am pretty sure the action plan is worth the money. They don't do a great job in selling it though.

I bought this as a gift for my son and returned it without giving it. I was looking for something a little more hands-on / outdoor adventure / how-to type material for camping and such and this seemed to me to be mostly big glossy pictures with factoids about situations in a jungle, the arctic or similar extreme environments. The pictures are nice and I'm sure many could find it interesting in a National Geographic kind of way, but it's not at all a guide you'd throw in your pack for general (typical US forest) outdoor adventure.

I bought this book for my kids - 8, 10 & 15. It contains some very important and practical information. More importantly though, it is well written and interesting. We have spent a lot of time with this book since buying it. I like that you can skip around and only read the sections that you are interested in.As an adult, I too greatly enjoy this book!

It's a fun book to read a couple pages of every day with my 3 & 4 year old boys.

My 11 year old took one look inside and promptly tossed it aside. Not interesting at all for him, or for me. Where’s that old classic from the 1970’s “How to Survive in the Woods”?

Bought for my son who is a total outdoors kid. he loves it

This is great if you are looking to interest an outdoorsy kid! Has some great information in it with very vivid and descriptive pictures. Even shows you how to put together your pack effectively. Information is broken up into sections and looks less overwhelming than an adult field guide etc. Catches the attention of those not so into reading. Book and pages are thick and sturdy as well. Great product overall.
