I liked this better when I read the library book. After owning it it seems like one more fanatic pushing an agenda of supplements and psychobabble. I am not convinced all the supplements recommended are safe or beneficial and they can be very expensive. I kept wondering if he did not have ownership in the companies whose products he was promoting.

This is a book I have recommended to several people. Why? Well, I can't really break it all down here, but basically if you want an easy to understand readable book that offers a quiz to help you figure out which behaviors you see in yourself or another - this is it - and it then points you to what you can do via supplements and diet to modify and change your behavior by literally changing you brain's behavior. See? That sounds way, way more complicated than this book really is, so all I can tell you is read it.If you've ever thought, "I'd love to change X about myself but I can't seem to stop Y and Z!" this can help. If you've ever thought, "I can't figure out my child's behavior and I'm at my wits end!" This can help. If you want to learn how to change your brain - it's like... if your car's not running right because you've been putting the wrong kind of gas in it, that's this book. Just read it.Since it's hard to explain, I'd advise looking up Dr. Amen on YouTube and Google and dig into what he has to say. This was televised on PBS, so I'm sure you can find it. Then when your interest is piqued, get the book for reference. It can really help to make effective changes in your life or the life of someone you love.

My wife and I watched his pbs special and quickly wanted to follow it up with a joint reading of his book. We expected to get more detailed information about what to eat early on with some recipes thrown in to give us a real world idea. The information provided is interesting, and as some reviews mention it does kinda repeat. But when it comes down to actually putting this into practice, i hoped for some more help from the book. At the end of the nutriotion section there is a link for a shopping list and recipes ,"perfect", i thought, just what i hoped for. But no, the link is dead. I googled it and found nothing. In his appendix he says to visit the "CHange your brain, change your body" site for more info but its only a video and a tour calendar. THERE IS ZERO HELP WITHOUT PAYING FOR MORE. i've looked for pdfs on his site, checked his blog, looked at a site map, nothing, nada, zip, zilch. This ultimately feels like a giant informercial giving you just enough to get started but not enough to succeed.

Awwww, Dr. Amen is AWESOME!! He has dedicated his life's work to help us take care of our Brains!! If you break your leg they are going to x-ray it. They do CAT scans and MRIs and look at everything that may be wrong with us. And now Dr. Daniel Amen does brain scans (he has been doing this for some time now) and do they tell a story or what??!!! It's kind of like when they showed people a black lung from smoking. Everything we do and especially everything we EAT affects our BRAIN. If you care about maintaining your brain and taking care of your body you will buy this book and anything else this great doctor is trying to teach us.

This guy has some good ideas but when I got to a part where he says you should snack all day I closed the book. You spike insulin when you constantly feed your face. I know because I used to always snack and since I now follow Dr Eric Berg I've never felt better and have lost over 25 pounds since following that no snacking advice. So, phooey on this guy.

This book really opened my mind up to changing some habits of my own to help better grow and support my brain. It is full of great knowledge that really helped me better understand why we do the things we do and how it affects our mind for our overall health.

I don't believe that I will use this cookbook very much at all. There are almost as many full-page photographs as there are recipes. The ingredient lists are very hard to read, the lines seem to run into each other, and the recipes themselves are not your everyday kind of meals but more for special occasions and take either too many ingredients or take too long to prepare.

This book is totally about making our brains better and it clearly reads like it is on the mark to help us all be better physically and in our job performance. Nutrition is everything! Everything Dr. Amen says appears to be supported by recent science. Before reading this book I had heard about concussions, but I had no idea how a whack in the head 40 or 50 years ago, which at that time was just taken in stride la-ti-dah, could have caused someone to later be so screwed up- whether by temper tantrums, lack of focus, addiction, or depression. So many people have ended up with better lives because of this book- they identified their personal deficiencies and then changed their eating and other behavior by following his vitamin and nutrition plans which are set out to deal with specific behaviors. As a result of my reading this, I am following this program gung ho and , now that they have opened clincs in Atlanta and NYC, I will definitely try to get there to have a pet scan of my brain and be analyzed. ( I have whacked it more than a few times- Once at the end of a softball practice I even got hit with a bat at full speed!) Previously thelocations of the clincis were major hauls,( California and DC) These new locations will make it easier. I wish they would open one in New England. Maybe at Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, where gambling addictions are ramapant, or, BETTER YET, at UMass Lowell at the new Health Sciences training facilities it is presently constructing. You have nothing to lose by buying this book, and every thing to gain.

Frederick Douglass: The Lion Who Wrote History

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—This picture book biography draws on Frederick Douglass's autobiographies to examine his motivations and his lasting impact on U.S. history. Using erasers and oil on board, Cooper conveys Douglass's determination, portraying him as strong and serious even as a child. The artwork depicts Douglass's growing awareness that a life outside of slavery might be possible. The events covered are well chosen to give young readers insight into the essence of his life and accomplishments. In a child-appropriate manner, the text describes beatings, but the illustrations do not show scars. When Douglass was 16, his owner realized that the teen's independent spirit might be problematic. The owner sent Douglass to another man, Edward Covey, whose mistreatment of slaves often caused them to back down. In a dramatic spread, Douglass is shown standing over Covey as the older man crouches on the ground, Douglass clearly the victor in their confrontation: an image that emphasizes the spirit that drove him to stand up for himself and other African Americans through the abolitionist movement. A time line provides context and further details about Douglass's life. VERDICT Although this title is similar in scope to Doreen Rappaport's Frederick's Journey, the two books complement each other. Recommended for collections looking to further explore Douglass's legacy.—Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA

Wonderful book for middle schoolers and up.

Great way for the little one's to learn about history.

Customer service fabulous!

The late Walter Dean Myers shows readers the upbringing of American hero, Frederick Douglass. Douglass was born a slave in Maryland. He was first taught about reading by the mistress of the house, but she soon stopped teaching him. Frederick grew up helping to care for the family who owned him and learned from the children of the family how to speak clearly. He also learned the differences between his life as a slave and their plans for happy futures. So Douglass taught himself to read. He was hired out to work in the shipyards where he met sailors who were free black men. He fell in love with a free woman and made his way North to freedom, posing as a sailor. Once free in the North, he started to speak out against slavery, becoming the legendary orator he is famous for being.Myers draws a complete picture of Douglass here. He shows readers the differences between slavery and freedom with a clarity that is vastly helpful. He doesn’t linger on the violence of slavery but it is also not lessened or ignored. He strikes just the right balance for a young audience. As the book continues, one sees Douglass grow up, learn many things and then not only head to freedom himself but argue that slavery should be abolished. There is real courage on these pages, risks taken for a real life, and an understanding that Douglass himself was an incredible individual. The illustrations by award-willing Cooper are exceptional. Done with erasers and oils on board, they have a beautiful texture to them, almost hazy with the historical significance of what they are depicting. There are images of love, others of violence, others of freedom newly found. As Douglass grows up on the pages he becomes more and more the icon visually as well.Strong and important, this picture book biography is inspiring. Appropriate for ages 7-9.

I recently read this with my almost 7 yr old, and it was a great introduction to start a conversation on slavery. Personally, I would not read it to a child much younger. The illustrations are beautiful and I really enjoyed reading it with my son.

Very pleased with this book that is in great condition. Thanks!

David Breashears co-director and leader of the Everest IMAX Filming Expedition Wren looks at everything with the eyes and ears of an intrepid reporter and a man of great integrity and disarming humor. He describes the beauty of the home countryside he traverses and introduces us to a variety of colorful characters. Most poignant are the moments on the trail when he is reminded of a powerful, dangerous, or comical moment in one of the many far-flung places he went as a foreign correspondent.Evan Thomas author of John Paul Jones: Sailor, Hero, Father of the American Navy A foreign correspondent walks out of his office at the New York Times and heads uptown -- for four hundered miles by foot. A fascinating journey with lots of adventures by a keen-eyed and honest man. You'll want to go with him.David Roberts author of Four Against the Arctic and Escape from Lucania A charming account of a long walk into retirement, this memoir gains depth and complexity as trailside incidents trigger flashbacks from Chris Wren's years as a foreign correspondent in some of the most dangerous places on Earth.Roger Rosenblatt Where Christopher Wren walks is always an exotic country, even when the terrain is the Bronx, Westchester, and Vermont. He brings a first-class foreign correspondent's eye and meditative memory to the familiar, which becomes wonderfully strange. Best of all, he brings his love of adventure to the adventure of his life. What great luck that he asked us along.

This book started out somewhat slow for me.I even questioned the author's writing ability at first. But a couple of chapters in it gained momentum and my interest. I enjoyed the book very much.

I have yet to hike the Appalachian trail, and I'm only 41, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has some wisdom well worth sharing, as well as a very candid view of his experience. I didn't feel he was in denial at all. Rather, he was realizing that 65 isn't so old, after all. This book is about the physical AND emotional journey into retirement. If you are interested in human nature as well as mother nature, chances are you will enjoy it. I gave it 5 stars to make up for some of those 2 star submissions. I've given it to my Mom, who has read it and enjoyed it and plans to give it to my sister. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes it's way to my Dad after that ... Enjoy.

A well written and interesting story. I'm glad I read it.

Liked the read. 5 stars for the trail stories, just didn't love the tangents about his (albeit impressive) life as a journalist. A noble and unique perspective about the transition from NYC professional to Vermont retiree.

Embracing retirement at the traditional age of 65, former correspondent Christopher Wren decides to leave his New York Times office (literally) and walk to his retirement home in northern Vermont. On his first day of walking he decides to visit an ATM machine, only to discover that his last several paychecks never made it into his bank account. So on this first, heralded day of his walk, he literally walks back home to his New York apartment, his wife and a home-cooked dinner. The money situation rectified, on Day Two, he makes it up to Yonkers. The adventure has begun. His roadside walking as a gutsy pedestrian in Westchester puts him at odds to an auto-filled world. In this region, sidewalks and dedicated hiking trails are few and far between. Instead, McMansions and auto-oriented travel are the norm. Wren longs for safer, open spaces but it actually takes him until Connecticut until he begins to connect with the landscape."Walking to Vermont" is as much a journey into Wren's past as an overseas correspondent as it is a journey into his future, lots of comparisons to many places are made. On this trip Wren wrestles with his vintage backpack bearing considerable weight. Listening to his body and by observing others, he increasingly lightens his load as the days and weeks go by. However, Wren is no purist. He isn't above staying at a motel or doing an overnight visit with a friend. As he moves onto the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail (which are co-extensive in the southern half of Vermont), Wren has become an expert at firing up his camp stove, a master at filtering water and a seasoned hiker. His encounters with day hikers, townspeople and through-hikers enrich this trip. It's an enjoyable journey which I enriched by following along with my collection of DeLorme maps.

One of those books you don't want to end. I think the less than quarter mile walk to a nearby strip center a challenge but this kept enthralled for the entire journey. Mr Wren doesn't just describe the rigors of trail hiking and the incentives of fellow walkers he interperces with historical information about the towns and bridges and monuments along the way. And he compares many of the rigors to experiences he has had all over the globe writing about wars and politics for the NYTimes. This is not the humor of Bill Bryson's Walk in the woods or Strayed's finding herself on the Pacific Crest trail but a readable tour of a narrow part of New England. Give it a few pages to start and you won't be disappointed.

I came across this book in the local library while waiting for my wife to choose some books. I read it over a two day period and basically couldn't put it down. It is essentially a book of contrasts in that the author walks out of Times Square, New York with all its bustle, through Harlem and out of the city to the north before entering country areas as he heads towards Vermont. Part of the book is in the City, part is on the Appalachian Trail and part is on the Vermont Long Trail. On the way he stays with friends, camps in shelters on the trail, filters his water, and then on the odd occasion stays in a nice hotel. I was interested in his observation that as soon as hikers entered the towns they would do what they needed to do such as have a good meal and then they would be anxious to be back on the trail again. Walking day after day is more like the world we evolved in rather than this artificial protective shell called civilization that we have built for ourselves. On the way there are interesting historical observations - who would have thought that George Washington would have paid $500 to have his horse rescued from a fall (and was he over charged - $500 was a lot of money in 1777).Despite the hardships on the trail you get a feeling that the author really came alive on this trip. The longest I have ever walked in one day is 20 miles and I have every admiration for the long distances covered here hiking day after day through what are often tough conditions. I have only done short hikes on the Appalachian Trail although I did a huge amount of hiking in England but whenever I look at a map of the Appalachian Trail you can see immediately that it is a tough hike with a lot of altitude changes. Wren met a lot of interesting people on the trip, many of whom were hiking alone which is probably the best way to do it.This is the kind of book that you could buy and then open up and read again five years later and I can recommend buying this one. I hope that Christopher Wren is enjoying his retirement in Vermont and that he still finds time to hike.

This is a must for anyone who loves the stunning and historical cover art of one of jazz' most legendary labels, Blue Note. There are literally hundreds of covers from some of the most acclaimed albums Blue Note ever released, and if you're anything like me you'll spend hours just flicking through it and feasting your eyes on the work of seminal designer Reid Miles, Blue Note stalwart and budding photgrapher Francis Wolff, and the many other famous or less well-known figures who played a part in creating the label's unique visual legacy, which is arguably just as important as its musical one.The beautiful full-colour photos of the covers range from 8.5" square, full-page shots, down to 3.25" squares arranged four to a page. Each album cover has its title and original catalogue number alongside, as well as the artist's name, the recording or release date, and the names of the cover designers or cover photographers. The covers are often arranged to highlight certain themes or styles that popped up over the course of the label's long historyThere are some short but informative essays at the beginning of the book on the label's founding, its major achievements and players, as well as its continuing influence today, written by the authors as well as those who were along on the ride such as Alfred Lion's wife, Ruth. There are a couple of small typos in the text, as on page 7 where it says Blue Note was founded in 1959, but in general they are very well written and lots of fun to read. At the end of the book there are also some rare and stunning black and white pictures (naturally!) of some of the artists who made Blue Note so famous. This is a book all jazz and cover art lovers will treasure forever.

This was a gift for my son who is a big fan of Blue Note records. I knew I had made a good purchase when he opened it and said, "This may have been a mistake!" He pored over the pages, pointing out the albums he had, the ones he wanted, and the ones he had been unaware of. This is a must for anyone that is a jazz fan!

This book contains over 400 Blue Note album covers from the late 40's through the early 70's. The graphic design work is iconic, with the sweet spot being Reid Miles's tenure as chief graphic designer from 1956 to the mid 60's. These covers are especially important in an era when albums are distributed piecemeal and digitally, without cover art or liner notes.Much of the Blue Note catalog has passed into the public domain in the last few years, which has enabled the recent release of incredibly inexpensive multi-CD sets of "Eight Classic Albums" by Real Gone Jazz and other other labels. Since these CD sets are very bare-bones in their packaging and presentation, it's great to be able to view the original album covers. For someone like myself, who bought many of these albums when they came out, the book generates a flood of memories. For younger folks who may be new to the music, the book evokes the time and culture of jazz in the 50's and 60's and amply displays the true definition of "cool".

Great collection. If you're looking for inspiration in the use of color, type, layout, photography, or even illustration, you'll find it in these album covers. The designers of these covers really had a unique luxury, which was having a relatively large and fixed-size canvas, in which only a small amount of information needed to be conveyed, and they used it to great effect. The covers range in mood from cool to jubilant, but are always bold.As a web designer, I see seeds of ideas for navigation, page layout and colorways. My only complaint was the small size of the book - but I see from other reviews that there are similar full-size collections as well.

If you love Blue Note Vinyl you'll love this book, since I do, I certainly do.

Love this book. Perfect “coffee table” book. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Blue Note album art, particularly from the ‘60s. Well worth the price.

Exceeded my expectations! Perfect visual representation of America's original musical art form era of Jazz! Blue Note artwork and graphics should be a touring exhibit...or museum!

Very good album with covers of the famous Blue Note studio! With stories. Good gift for jazz lovers!

Excellent book and easy to reach Swift resource, runs through the majority and standard Swift api capabilities, but gives a little extra explanation that adds an extra perspective over the Swift book apple has.

I don’t like this book very much. To my taste, the examples and explanations aren’t enough simple, focused and clear as I would like to. The good professor makes a hard theme looks no so hard, and remark only the essentials. In at least one chapter, he uses code that he said “is out of this book scope” and do not explains it, so why he uses it? I don’t finish the reading, it bothers me.

It is a great book if you want to pickup swift from scratch, not so great if you really want to master it. I wish author spent more time covering more challenging topics like concurrency or memory management, instead there are pages of simple stuff with lots of unnecessary examples. Nevertheless, it is easy to read and not boring if you skip some stuff and I recommend this book beginners.

Like the author, I made a living programming in about a dozen languages and was pretty burned out until I encountered Swift. After decades of making a living designing and coding in assembly, Java, C/C++, JavaScript, PostScript, Fortran, PL/1, HyperCard, and some proprietary languages, Swift, and the author’s explanation of it, provide a breath of fresh air.The author explains the principles behind, and examples of how to use, the unique and powerful features of Swift. The chapter on protocol oriented programming is particularly helpful.Apple’s developer reference documentation is so well written and comprehensive that it is difficult to find a book that can provide additional guidance. This book does.

Good item, thank you!

I like it’s explanation of ideas and I think you will too.

Duran Duran was - and still is - my favorite band of all time, so of course I was interested in reading a book about my favorite band member. Wow. What we make up and believe happens "behind the scenes" when you are a young teenager is so not reality. John Taylor's account of his childhood years, then taking the reader through the band's beginnings, through the band's success and fame, to where he is today - all through his eyes - is absolutely wonderful. He writes with such courage, selflessness, down-to-earth raw candor that I have an entirely new type of respect for him (and the rest of the band). I truly appreciate him for writing his story and the powerful message it could bring to those "up and coming" today in the music/entertainment industry today. His words offer inspiration, hope, and of what it takes to be successful - hard work. Thank you, John, for writing your story ... I appreciate and respect you even more now at "40 something" years than I ever have. May you and your family continue to have peace and joy in your life.

My interest in Duran Duran was mainly rooted in their earlier dance tracks. They had a style that was edgier than most of the other bands from the new romantic and synth pop bands of the era. This book is the right balance between road stories, band history, personal growth and sex drugs and rock and roll. I bought it on a whim and listened to their musical output while reading it. Although Mr. Taylor made some of the same poor choices that instant fame and money brought to many of his peers, at least he owns them and there is little blame on circumstances or other people. Many of these rock royalty bios and autobiographies leave a bad taste at the end and possibly the need for a long shower! This one, however, left me feeling a great deal of respect for the author. He seems open and honest and that makes for a great read and a good life.

I don't feel compelled to write reviews very often. But I do tonight. Just turned my tablet off, having finished my kindle version of this book, got out of bed, it's close to midnight, but yes. That's how nice it was to read this book. OK, so you might say it's commercial. You might say he is just trying to milk the golden calf just a little longer. It might be true. Or not. I like to think not. I can hear a most authentic voice coming out of these pages - of a young man's rise to stardom and him getting totally lost. Oh so lost. The lovely part is this - there IS someone watching over us from above or perhaps it was Mom Jean's prayers that finally came through and helped him pull out of it all. This is a fantastic story how a lost soul finds peace. Despite of stardom. For those of us who has "followed" JT for many years, since he was plastered on our walls and up until now when we all have grey hairs and a few more wrinkles - well, it's been a blast to hear his voice coming through and getting to know him a little better in these pages. Well done John - that was a very good read.

As a teen in the 80s, I was "in love" with John Taylor and pretty much most of the band as most young girls were. I never knew about his battles and looking back, it amazes me at all that happened but how well the publicity managers did their jobs. It's hard to imagine how he could have made it through so much, and at times, I found myself asking, "how is he even still here?" Thankfully...he is and sometimes you just know that things happen for a reason that we cannot begin to understand yet our lives play out day by day to the tune of a play written out long before we drew a first breath. Yes, JT, you are right where you are meant to be and thanks for sharing your story so honestly and openly. It helps the teen in me who drove 5hrs to see your final 2016 US date in Durant realize that yes, he and the guys are human. There are songs on Paper Gods that speak to me, especially Pressure Off as I deal with my mom's third battle with a rare form of cancer that we know, ultimately, will win the war in this life, but not the next. Thanks for helping me through my own battles, and for always being there when I turn on my playlist.

This is a great read for any fan of Duran Duran and John Taylor. I preordered the download and started reading it at midnight, Pacific Time. I couldn't put it down until I HAD to go to sleep at 4 am. I finished it this afternoon.John's writing is very engaging and honest. He has a flair for getting straight to the point that is unexpected and refreshing. He also had the sense to know who would be reading this book (fans) and didn't go over what were already well known details of the early years. Instead, he brings us his eyes, his perception, and his story in a way that is brutally honest and a little more than critical of his years in addiction.Yes, as others have said, he doesn't dish down and dirty details but I'm okay with that. I thought he was too classy to go down that road and and didn't expect him to talk poorly of anyone in the band. Perhaps that's because he truly takes full responsibility for his own actions and has the compassion to know that his perspective was the only truth he knew to write about. And we learn plenty of truth about his downward spiral into cocaine, alcohol and fame addiction. It was a long ride for John. Those who had similar experiences in the early 80's might be surprised that it took him so long to get to rehab. He stayed in that bubble for a very long time. I'm glad he made it out.I was getting a bit worried when I hit 60% done and he was still in 1985. I wanted to know about the years when he left the band and worried he would completely skim over it. And he does do that just a little but somehow he covered just enough that I did not feel lacking when I was done. I have been waiting for this book since early this year so I had built up some expectations. But as John reiterates from recovery, expectations are just disappointments under construction. Go in reading this book with that in mind and you will find an excellent memoir.

Review

Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review-Gnosticism is a label applied to a collection of religious ideas that has long exerted a certain appeal to public intellectuals and controversialists, ranging from the theologian Marcion in the 2nd century AD to literary critic Harold Bloom in our time. What attracts them, I suppose, is the conviction that the highest truths are available only to a small circle of initiates -- the Greek term gnostokoi can be translated as "those who understand divine matters, knowing what the gods know."The latest to unfurl the banner of Gnosticism is John Lamb Lash, who describes the Gnostics of the ancient world as "the elite of Pagan intellectuals" and declares that their writings are "the explosive charge that can blow the institution of the Faith off its foundations, for good and all." By "the Faith," he means the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition in its entirety, and he intends to do nothing less than convert his readers into latter-day Gnostics.Lash, whose publisher describes him as "an exponent of the practice of mythology," rejects much of the contemporary scholarship on Gnosticism. For example, he dismisses the work of Princeton historian Elaine Pagels, author of The Gnostic Gospels, because she places the texts discovered at the Egyptian archeological site of Nag Hammadi within the context of early Christianity. Such an approach, he insists, "has hampered understanding of who the Gnostics were, and why they protest so vehemently against the rise of Christianity."Lash seeks to rescue Gnosticism from the dustbin of Christian history and restore it to its rightful place amid the splendors of pagan antiquity. To signal his admiration for the fecund religious imagination of paganism, he capitalizes the word "Pagan" as if it were a single faith rather than a phantasmagorical assortment of beliefs and practices. But he does point out that Gnosticism itself shouldn't be described as a religion or even a sect, if only because gnostokos was "the generic term for any person learned in divine matters." Above all, he insists that Gnosticism represents the path toward "spiritual deep ecology," symbolized by today's adherents of the Greek earth goddess Gaia. Not in His Image is perhaps best compared to Robert Graves' The White Goddess, an earlier and only slightly less eccentric effort to find and explain the linkages among the fantastic variety of religious experiences in the ancient world. Like Graves, Lash is a self-invented scholar who has read widely and thought deeply. (He is the author of Quest for the Zodiac, The Hero and The Seeker's Handbook, and the co-founder of metahistory.org with a former wife, Joanna Harcourt-Smith, who lived with Timothy Leary in the 1970s. And he is general executor of the estate of Jack Kerouac's daughter, Jan, to whom he also was once married.) He confidently issues pronouncements about what he calls "the wholesale genocide of Pagan culture" and prescriptions for the spiritual salvation of the world.Lash offers this work as a corrective to the "scholarly specialization" that condemns the Gnostics to "an obscure and uncertain place on the margins of the history of religion." Along the way, he seeks to repudiate what he sees as the pigheadedness of the academic establishment. Thus, for example, he condemns biblical scholars who do not see the continuities that Lash detects between the early Christians and the religious community at Qumran. He calls them "Zaddikites," but they are better known to the lay reader as the custodians of the Dead Sea Scrolls: "They fail to realize that the message of love in the charming miracle tales of the New Testament is a sugar coating on the bitter cyanide of Zaddikite ravings."But Lash is not concerned merely with scolding biblical scholars. His goal is to melt down the religious and philosophical ideas of antiquity and recast them as a serviceable faith for our world. In place of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition, which he links to "the religious schizophrenia of the ancient Hebrews" and which he flatly condemns as "annihilation theology," he proposes that we embrace Gnosticism and what he dubs "Gaian ethics," which he describes as "not a call to faith in God, but faith in the human species."Lash is capable of explaining the mind-bending concepts of Gnosticism and pagan mystery cults with bracing clarity and startling insight. At moments, however, he slips into a kind of New Age rant as baffling as any mystical text. "What we seek in 'Gaia theory' is a live imaginal dimension," he writes in one such passage, "not a scaffolding of cybernetic general systems cogitation." Or: "Gnosis, taken as a path of experimental mysticism, and the Sophianic vision, taken as a guiding narrative for co-evolution, can provide the spiritual dimension for deep ecology independently of the three mainstream religions derived from the Abrahamic tradition."Even he acknowledges that his book can be "a long haul and a lot to follow" and that his line of reasoning "demands exceptional concentration from the likes of us, many of whom cannot stay in the moment for three minutes at a time."Lash's arguments are often lively and entertaining, even when they aren't convincing. When he contends that Celtic civilization spread to the far corners of the ancient world -- "An apocryphal legend claims that John the Baptist was a Celt," he writes, "and Mary Magdalene was Circassian, half Celt, half Jewish" -- he is reduced to citing the film "Lawrence of Arabia" to support the proposition that "Celtic half-breeds survived in the Levant down into the early twentieth century."And when he considers what he calls the "sci-fi theology" of the ancient Gnostics, he comes uncomfortably close to affirming that the otherworldly "Archons" of Gnostic myth were authentic extraterrestrials."It is worth noting that the first great UFO wave of the twentieth century occurred in the summer and fall of 1947 when Jean Doresse was in Cairo examining the Nag Hammadi Codices, at the very moment the first Dead Sea Scrolls were found," Lash writes. "This was also the year that the CIA was founded, with the dual intention (according to UFO conspiracy buffs) to co-opt alien technology and cut a deal with the aliens, allowing them to experiment covertly on human subjects.... In fact, a CIA agent named Miles Copeland was dispatched to Damascus to examine and photograph some of the first scroll fragments to be unearthed."At one telling moment at the outset of his book, Lash describes how his life was transformed when, in early adolescence, he was reading a copy of Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra in the back seat of the family car on the way back from an orthodontist's appointment in upstate New York. "I swore to finish what Nietzsche had begun," he declares. "I vowed to think through and live out his critique of Christianity to the end."With Not in His Image he keeps that vow. But when Lash invites us to embrace the "high strangeness" of what he calls the "ET/Archon" hypothesis "with the Gnostic theory of alien intrusion" -- "the stranger it gets, the more sense it makes," he insists -- he passes wholly through the looking glass. (Jonathan Kirsch)"John Lash's Not In His Image presents a fascinating view of meanings in a sacred history long--and wrongly--suppressed. It demands profound correction of what Western civilization has been taught to call religion. It is a book that should be read by everyone."--Barbara G. Walker, author of The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, Feminist Fairy Tales, and others."This remarkable book introduces a Gnostic approach to Sophia-Gaia, the feminine wisdom principle embodied by the earth, vividly soliciting us to embrace Her revival for our survival. When the human race revered the fertility of the earth, the perennial philosophy of human kindness and good sense, as embodied in the common laws of indigenous people the world over, was equally prominent in ancient Europe. Gyncentric societies did not know the taint of sexual apartheid; mystery cults were participatory, experiential and peaceful. The erudition and mindfulness of the Pagan world have been hugely underestimated, since the onslaught of patriarchy, symbolized by the flood, destroyed a much larger civilization than we have been lead to believe. Initiated in antediluvian times with the arrival of misogynic sky gods, it took the three monotheistic religions to achieve the undoing of the sophisticated way of life of our forebears. In Gnostic terms, evil came from outside of the matrix of the earth, from another dimension or parallel universe. Entities of this parallel dimension managed to insinuate themselves into our world. It may come as a shock to many, that the Gnostics held Yahweh to be such an entity, facilitating the promotion of the perpetrator-victim ethos of Salvationism, held to be an abomination and a fateful error. John Lash presents the stark contrast between the tenets of retribution and exploitation - of the feminine , and the ethos of illuminism, with its emphasis on personal experience and communion with nature, within the framework of a vast body of knowledge, reaching from the classic authors of antiquity to present-day proponents of eco-science and eco-spirituality. A fascinating read."--Susanne G. Seiler, Gaia Media News. Basel, Switzerland"Sometimes a book changes the world. Not In His Image is such a book. It is clear, stimulating, well-researched, and sure to outrage the experts. Take it from a scientist: the 'experts' are often wrong. In fact, a hallmark of breakthroughs is that they are usually well-researched and outrage 'experts.' Science shows the importance of trusting clear thinking about direct evidence. This book is full of both. Get it. Improve not just your own life, but civilization's chances for survival." --Roger Payne, Ph.D., MacArthur Fellow, president of Ocean Alliance, author of Among Whales"John Lamb Lash's Not in His Image is a rare achievement, combining impeccable scholarship with remarkable visionary insight. In a breathtaking tour de force, the author provides a profound analysis of the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and their connections to the patriarchal system. He identifies the deep roots of the intrinsic problems of these three religions-- perpetrator-victim emphasis and salvationist ideology--and points out their relationship to the alienation and agony of modern humanity. This book is a must for everybody who is trying to understand the psychospiritual currents underlying the present global crisis." --Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of Psychology of the Future and The Cosmic Game"Not In His Image is a brilliantly subversive and provocative work of scholarship and passion that overturns everything you ever believed about Christianity. The gnostic mysteries have found a new and eloquent champion in John Lash." --Graham Hancock, author of Fingerprints of the Gods"An extraordinary and profound book. Not In His Image a blessing, and a warning that we must cease taking the terrible advice of Christianity … and that we must instead re-inhabit our own joyful, painful, mortal, beautiful bodies and fight for our lives and for the lives of those we love. This book points the way home."--Derrick Jensen, from the afterword"What we know about the divine comes by way of three paths--through the spectacle of nature, through the testimony of spiritual seekers, and through our own inner experience, as in meditation and mystical communion. John Lamb Lash seeks to renew our understanding of all three paths, and thus to renew our sense of the divine. In particular, he challenges the otherworldly creeds that have come down to us in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and to recover the earth-based religions that preceded them. Those ecologically wise religions flourished, he reminds us, not only among the native peoples of the Western Hemisphere but also in ancient Europe. By reclaiming this pagan heritage, he argues, we can begin to cure the pathologies of genocide, war, and environmental degradation that afflict the modern world." --Scott Russell Sanders, author of A Private History of Awe"Not In His Image is a stunning book. It should cause quite a furor. Lash's historical and anthropological erudition are breathtaking." --Colin Wilson, author of Atlantis and the Kingdom of the Neanderthals: 100,000 Years of Lost History and The Outsider"John Lash's heretical book is a precious act of spiritual disobedience that seeks to save the world from Salvationism. Lash opens new ground between myth and ecology, and helps one feel what the planet feels. He proposes direct knowing and moving beyond belief, and advocates animism as a proposition to test. He leaves the future open and in need of human imagination. Humanity is implicated in the future of the living planet, but Lash exercises caution when making suppositions about our role as a species. This book is learned, courageous, and full of insights. Some may find it challenging and even shocking, but it is an important read for those interested in life on earth. It is made for readers to chew on, rather than believe."--Jeremy Narby, anthropologist, author of The Cosmic Serpent, DNA and the Origins of Knowledge and Intelligence in Nature: An Inquiry into Knowledge

this is a serious read. If you are interested in early Christianity and the way it was perceived at that time, then this will tell you. here's a hint: not so well, lol. This book has led me to some other books about the same subject. the author has written a book that can be read by just about anyone, as long as they aren't drunk on the kool aid of Christ.

Author John Lash is a careful and particularly insightful researcher with a unique perspective and voice, who has uncovered previously-hidden information coming from the deep past that is of paramount importance to humans today and has the potential to change the world for the better, if only the world at large would attend closely to it. Indeed, it may be that humanity's response to the information in Not in His Image (NIHI), and related intel propagated before and since by Lash, could be the most important key factor in determining whether humankind goes extinct or evolves into a more sustainable form - a union of intelligence, imagination and instinct expressed through animal bodies (with opposable thumbs) - that can enjoy lasting success.I would rate Not in His Image as the most potentially transformative book, on an individual level, in my personal experience, and I have read many books that have such potential and were written to promote healing and growth through deeper understanding of what makes us human and what makes society tick, including both its necessary and beneficial aspects and its very significant downsides, i.e. "the evil that men [and women] do."Of course followers of the Abahamic religions, especially Christianity, will find it difficult to read this book with an open mind, and negative reviews from that camp are understandable and somewhat predictable. In fact, Lash courageously sets himself up as a target by taking a stand for, and arguing for, a set of positions that are generally pretty far outside of the mainstream and form an overall worldview that is opposed to the mainstream in many ways. And why does he do that? It seems clear to me that he ardently believes not only that his positions are correct but that it's of vital importance to "get the message out" regarding them and to share with others the knowledge, reasoning and experiences that underlie his views. Those ends are clearly more important to him than the personal consequence of being loathed by people who take issue with his ideas and find him distasteful precisely because he presents a case for those ideas in a very persuasive and eloquent way. "He's extremely eloquent ... therefore extremely dangerous," wrote an FBI agent about Native American activist John Trudell. It's clear that some people feel the same way about Lash because he effectively demolishes the ideologies to which they're attached and with which they identify, clearly exposing those ideologies for what they really are.I think anyone approaching material such as this does well to entertain the question, "Where is mainstream thinking, and where are mainstream values and their expressions, taking us as a species? What are they permitting or inducing us to do to the biosphere, the web of life on which we depend for our own existence?" - and then to consider the absolute necessity of making profound, carefully-selected and well-understood adjustments, individually and (preferably) as a species. The individual may feel that he or she does not have the power to change society, but if individuals do not at least start changing their own lives and outlooks for the better, society surely won't change in corresponding or similar ways.No one really likes to have it pointed out that they are on a path by which they're damaging themselves and contributing to the downfall of their species (indeed, unimaginable destruction - that we don't have to imagine because it is occurring incrementally in the news day by day, so all we really have to do is pay attention); but that unpleasant exposure, and especially the exposure of root causes, is a necessary concomitant of laying the groundwork for pointing out that there is a better path, and outlining that path. (NIHI actually does all of this and more.)The "new" path really won't work, and cannot work, if polluted and deviated by mixing it with aspects the "old" path, regardless of people's tendency to overlook and justify harmful aspects of the way we've been used to doing things. That's why it is necessary to throw those harmful aspects into sharp relief. It's also worth noting that the positive evolutionary path Lash promotes is not something that he has personally invented, a completely new and fresh innovation; rather, it's a path that our ancestors were actually on, a long time ago, from which they were deviated by insidious ideology, to our harm and sorrow today. The process of deviation was so thorough and successful in its effect that the details of what was lost were buried, hidden and largely forgotten; and, to the best of my knowledge, they have not been reassembled and set forth previously in modern times with the degree of clarity found in NIHI. Certainly I don't know of any book other than the one under discussion that exposes those details and the bigger picture to which they logically add up effectively and clearly enough to induce such a profound alteration in a person's understanding of the world, its problems and their (real, feasible and uniquely effective) solutions, motivating him or her to very well-defined life-changing positive action undertaken with confidence and assurance. While those effects are definitely not guaranteed, some readers do experience them - as I know from personal experience. In short and simple terms, anyone who hasn't read this book needs to do so. It is potentially the most important and life-changing book you will ever read. I can't recommend it too highly.

I'm a voracious reader. Nearing 50 years of age, I've read thousands of books. I can honestly say, without question, this is my absolute favorite. It has changed how I live my life and how I look at everything. My lifelong search for truth was rewarded with this book. It answers so many questions, and all the pieces seem to fall into place after reading it. It is a bit "wordy", so if you are not very educated, like me, you may want to have a dictionary nearby, but I can't fault this wonderful author for being intelligent and having a large vocabulary, especially after he has written a book like this that has impacted my entire life in such a positive way. There is no way I can articulate to you guys the significance and importance of this work. All I can say is, you have to get this book.

Sophia as wisdom wants a place to take root....sophia's desire translates to what i call the greet feeling, when energy moves like a river in my body...it is a recognition tool to truth and wisdom perfectly married to humanity.. i am in supreme awe that this feeling has been articulated in such a precise fashion as presented in this book...john lash possesses great capacity as an extraordinary listener to wisdom itself and write it down for others like me to pick up one day gifted through my friend durga... and have so many huge wonderings be answered and confirmed by wisdom itself...her method of communication for me is energetic call and response...marco polo..intuition works.. imagination...another great gift...and john brilliantly distinguishes the archonic version...fantasy...and last, sophia's choice as she dreamed the earth...and her correction.. has become humanities model as the way through this big mess of a modern world... i have never responded to one of these reviews in my life, until now...my name is asha..email as follows..ropkey@gmail.com
