Sindbad was my hero as a child and read every book that I could find at 12 years old. So after 40 years later, I opened Sindbad's story back up and Muhsin Mahdi's translation is as close as possible. Sindbad was a fantastic sailor and his engaging and beautiful words as a hero helps this modern world--to be a religious, honest man doing the best we can and God helps us out along the way!

Muhsin Mahdi has truly revived the spirit of the story with the '..Nights' in a remarkably electric and vivid fashion! This is the best of the best. No more cluttered or muddy allusions to trip over due to an author's choice of words. . The stories of Sinbad are told in so literal and exciting a fashion to read now, and even again and again. I feeeel like I've been t here before. A masterpiece of splendid delight.

This was a quick read over the course of multiple plane flights using my iPad. Each story contains pieces of morality hidden in the passages. The various poems can get a little tiring and repetitive, but for the most part they do not distract from the story. The overall behavior of the characters can seem a little repetitive as well. However, this classic tale will take you to a forgotten time full of magic and mystery. Come see the darker side of stories involving Sinbad the sailor and Aladin.

Sindbad and Other Stories from the Arabian Nights edited from several of the oldest Arabic versions of the stories by Muhsin Mahdi and translated into English by Husain Haddawy is by far the best edition and the best translation of the familiar stories. If you were introduced to the stories as children's stories or by way of Richard Burton's purposely anachronistic English translation, you will be surprised by how fresh the stories seem when you read Mahdi's and Haddawy's excellent version. The stories are told using a tone that one can easily imagine as that used by an accomplished story-teller enchanting a crowd of listeners.

I did a lot of research when choosing a translation of the 1001 nights, and according to numerous experts this is the one to have at this point in time, especially if you haven't read these stories before.

Their are two parts to the "Arabian Nights" stories. My daughter was looking for a particular story so I bought both books. She read them within two weeks and set them on the shelf, satisfied. This is better if you can find these at the library as you won't re-read them but if you can't find them consider asking the library if they could get it and possibly buy it for them. A good set of stories to read.

Amazon sent me this without the dust jacket. I ordered it with Volume 1 (same translator) and I'm still waiting for the jacket! The books sit on my shelf side-by-side and it looks silly. Plus I thought I paid for the whole book, jacket included, so why didn't I get what I paid for?

Ahhhhh better that going to the movies. Great adventures and descriptive. A gem

This book has everything you need to do successful fluid art work.Recipes, techniques, and supplies for anyone's budget! You don't have to be an established "artist" to do this and it's so much fun! I started out the non-archival route and did the swipe method resulting in "The Cosmic Pickle" among other masterpieces. I'm glad there is a chapter with selling advice.

This book is written by a self-taught mixed-media artist. The book includes examples of his artworks which I liked and found them very useful in the context of the technique explanation.The book starts with a brief history of fluid art. The history starts with Savid Siqueiros, but unfortunately does not show any of his artwork. I was able to locate his work on internet as I wanted to see what his art looked like to influence so many other artists.Then the book describes how to set up your own studio, including the safety equipment such as fire extinguisher. I liked that the author included photos of his own studio as well as the price of the equipment.Finally, the author moves to explaining the technique he uses. The explanations were clear and useful, and the artwork itself is beautiful.One thing I found a little distracting is that the text of every line in this book is centered, rather than using the traditional type setting technique of filling each line start to end. However, I was enjoying the content and the formatting annoyance was minor.Ali Julia review

OMG! What a treat to "step inside" Rick's art studio for an easy-to-follow course on paint pouring. Just like his paints, there was an easy flow of information - color photos in each section, list of actual products and brands that he uses, friendly layout and sequencing, a glossary, other artists to check out, and how to set prices when selling artwork. He thought of everything. And I love his sense of humor. My favorite visual aid is the analogy chart to help us remember the 4 components of a paint pouring "journey": vehicle, passengers, luggage, and destination. This book has totally boosted my confidence! I'm grateful.

Rick's book is an excellent collection of recipes and method recommendations. He begins with a very brief history of the art form and then lists a few recipes followed by short chapters describing a variety of techniques. At the end of the listing is an extensive glossary of terms.The reason I gave this book 3 stars is because it reads more like a white paper - notes for a presentation. The entire book took me about half an hour to read. There were photos of Rick's finished art, which is nice. It would be helpful to have more photos from the actual process.I read this book on my iPhone using the Kindle app. The text was centered and page breaks were inconsistent and sporadic. There were inconsistent gaps in the text making the aesthetic appearance of this book a little distracting. The photos were small and difficult to see.If you are looking for a short book to use as a quick reference guide while creating your liquid pouring art, this book will meet your needs.I received this book for free in exchange of my fair and honest review.

I don't condone plagiarism. Therefore, I'll be returning this book. The author apologized that her team and writers didn't credit people. So who wrote the book? She admitted to this and it can be found online. A lot of Christian writers use ghost writers. That's fine. Did she and her publisher skip the taking of other writers words and claiming them as her idea as no one will notice? I'm very disappointed.

Regurgitated content from Girl, Wash Your Face and all her other social media. Nothing important or relevant to anyone with their own mind and opinions.

This is Rachel's second book and just like her first book it is being marketed to both a Christian and secular audience. But the contents give one cause for alarm as there are many anti-biblical principles and thought processes that raise some serious red flags. Just like her first book, she is putting herself and her life above all else and presenting this as the way to live even if you are a Christian.(which is secular humanism). If you read reviews on the Gospel Coalition and elsewhere they will confirm that the principles touted in this and her previous book are not Biblical. It's very sad to see people with a platform use it for personal glory and advancement and then claim to be a Christian. Once again, if this were being marketed to an exclusive secular audience then the views presented would be pretty typical. If you're a Christian however, you will find the contents to be contrary to the Bible.

Very disappointed with the language in this book!

It's like every motivational and self help speaker you ever listened to got quoted (but not necessarily credited) here.And sadly, for a book published by a Christian publisher and authored by a professing believer, there is a noticeable lack of Biblical support, some profanity, and ideas that just aren't compatible with the Christian walk.I just can't recommend this to anyone.

I read this book a few weeks ago and I had to jump on here and write a review for those looking to purchase now that it’s officually available. First let me start by saying I’m usually the person who will read a book in one day. But I spread this one out so I could savor it and really absorb what our pal Rach was saying. If you are a woman with dreams and goals then you should read this book. Even if you’re not a woman or you don’t have dreams and goals then you should still read this book. Rachel Hollis gives you information that, if you’re like me, you already know in the back of your mind. But she makes you think about it in a new perspective. And she encourages and inspires you to take action. A must read for anyone looking to do better in any regard. 10/10 is recommend this to everyone.

Amazing Book! Got both the Audible and the actual book and I love listening to Rachel read the book to me. This is what I did with Girl, Wash Your Face and I now hear her in my head motivating me. I totally recommend this book if you feel that you are to be doing bigger and better things with your life but you can’t get past yourself.

I have been getting Kim Jacob's beautiful calendar for about ten years now. I try to make myself get something different, but her artwork is absolutely beautiful, soothing, relaxing, and fun. It's the kind of art you wish you could climb into. I am working on getting my birthdays and such moved over to the new year's calendar, so here I have last year's and this year's next to each other. Every single page of every single calendar is wonderful.This calendar is nice quality and has plenty of writing space for birthdays and appointments, whatever you need to "calendar." I'm very happy to have this beautiful calendar again and I will likely continue purchasing it each year, as it always brings joy. You will be happy you made the choice to purchase this, if you do. Highly recommended!!Also, this year is her 30th anniversary calendar. Wish I would have found my first one 30 years ago! Truly dreamy and just gorgeous.

I just finished "Soul, Self, and Society." What a joy, very much like what I felt when reading Louis Menand's "The Metaphysical Club." In Rubin's hands, like Menand's, every sentence moves us forward. Even before reflecting critically upon his central arguments, the reader is thoroughly engaged and even dazzled by wonderfully fresh framings of familiar topics.... and the prose! Does anyone else writing today use use thrilling vocabulary with such ease and lack of pretension? Tesselates, abrading realities, imbricating, quondam (adj), chthonic survival, diadem of definitude, supererogatory, cabin (verb). And then the philological tidbits: chattel-cattle, shire-reeve.In addition, Rubin writes with a combination of seriousness and humor seldom found in this sort of discussion: "To attribute the beginning of the process by which the Church's influence declined to St. Francis, who never expressed anything but reverence for the priesthood and papacy, would be indulging an excessive thirst for paradox." Or, "...ten percent thought that Noah's wife was Joan of Arc."And Rubin gathers so many seemingly disparate yet pivotal moments of Western experience: Wordsworth's daffodils, Roland, Rodrigo Díaz el Cid.Rubin also summons many lingering, disturbing truths we must survive, such as Alan Turing's fate. He writes with the clarity of a great teacher, varying his sentence structure to land, forcefully and unexpectedly, on his central points: "The principle of equality does not obviate the need to make difficult choices, of course; it is morality not magic." Or simply brilliant insights: "The crimes of child abuse, spousal abuse, and marital rape are products of High Modernity and its morality of self-fulfillment."Rubin's argument is so wonderfully clear: Western society organized itself first around a morality first of honor, then of higher purposes,and finally of self-fulfillment. In brilliant application of contemporary usage to an ancient custom, Rubin refers to the "outsourcing" of government in the Early Middle Ages, each regional lord commanding his land and people with little national identity. To illustrate the code of honor and its evolution, Rubin discusses in some detail the famous "Poema de Myo Cid," how rough treatment from his king cannot shake el Cid's sense of duty to his lord. In the High Middle Ages, that code of honor shifts to a morality of "higher purposes," with ensuring eternal salvation by accepting one's place in the heavenly-ordained order here. Then, in the eighteenth century, with the American revolution, the third shift, to a morality of self-fulfillment, each man (and eventually each woman) entitled to define for himself or herself "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It is easy to see, following Rubin's analysis, how the social issues which so divide us are, in the end, competing attempts at self-fulfillment.One understands, reading Rubin's masterful study, how each of these moral orders endures, like Neanderthal DNA, in our bodies and in ourlives. Religious fanaticism, never completely absent from even the most advanced thinking, reminds us how the morality of higher purposes inspires pitiless abuse of those outside the tribe; tribal assertions to counter nationalism in its best sense abound on Texas bumper stickers screaming SECEDE; Catalans and Scots pursue "independence" even when sober economic analysis suggests the folly of separation. Gay marriage and reproductive rights, gender identification, shifting views of marriage and childbearing---all emerge as Rubin reminds us of the political implications of our founding principles.Only once in reading did I feel at odds with an assertion: John Paul II was for progressive Catholics not "associated with reform." Yes, he fought communists; he also squelched nuns and refused even to allow a discussion of birth control, celibate clergy, ordination of women, reconciliation for divorced Catholics. When his archives are finally opened, in the 2080s, we may, I fear, discover embarrassing truths, rather like what we now know of Father Pacelli''s manipulation of Pius XI and the Jewish question. And John Paul, inexplicably, refused to bring Father Maciel, founder of the Legionarios de Cristo, to account, a sick, predatory monster.Rubin has given us the vocabulary and conceptual framework to recognize the origins of our judgments, how our institutions have evolved at the intersection of morality and governance, and therefore how to interrogate those precepts and instantiations. Robert E. Lee came long after Roland, Oliveros, and Rodrigo Díaz, but his decision to hang with Virginia---home and hearth---comports very well with Rubin's description of that received notion of honor, of privatized governance. Lee no doubt viewed Jefferson Davis very much the way el Cid understood Alfonso VI.This book and its central theses should undergird and frame public policy discussions, informing political decisions:The reader ends this book in profound gratitude to Rubin's first-rate mind, submitting itself to the discipline of argument and ordered thought. J.S. Bach offering us a massive fugue.

Very informative and thoroughly enjoyable. Helped me to better understand why other people have certain world views and how their systems of morality developed over time. Helped me to put my own values and moral system in better perspective. In our diverse society and world, where we all need to cooperate and understand each other better, this book could not have come at a better time. I hope it is widely read.

I ended up giving this book away although I did like what I read of it. Edward Rubin has a great mind and I appreciate his writing this book.I just could not really get into it.

This is a wonderful and broad account of a fundamental transformation of society, with consequences that are apparent every day in the news. An underappreciated and brilliant scholar!

Orginal and wide-ranging with a fascinating historical sweep.

Highly comprehensible, Rubin's book provides an insightful and interesting examination of the history of the relationship between governance and morality and how morality continues to shape governance. What I find to be the most significant element is his focus on the shift from old morality to new morality in governance: old morality, that of higher purposes, vs. new morality, that of self-fulfillment. Essentially, laws that inhibit the social rights of others, according to Rubin, are of the old morality and wage a mental assault on the individual affected when their self-fulfillment is hindered. He suggests that governance of the old morality is actually immoral because of the restriction of rights that one needs in order to be self-actualized.This is a vital read for anyone interested in political science and progressive governance.

I just finished Rubin's Soul, Self, and Society. Although on a quite different topic, it reminds me of Steven Pinker's block buster, The Better Angels of our Nature: Why Violence has Declined. Both books are highly satisfying because their authors have been able to stand back and take a broad historical view of their topic, and tell us something new and really important: that we are not like our ancestors. Rubin shows how civilization has changed, that people's personalities have changed over the longue duree; once people were preoccupied with soul, and now they are preoccupied with self. His argument is convincing, but, at least for me, it is also challenging, and even frightening. I suspect that anyone who reads the book will have much the same reaction.

On the basis of a preliminary draft, I found this book to be wonderfully informative and enjoyable to read. It explains what is behind a great many of our current political controversies in a detached, insightful way. The book also goes back into the historical past, and discusses literature, art, and social practices in the Middle Ages and Early Modern periods. For anyone who wants to understand the origins of modern government and morality, and how those origins affect today's world, I heartily recommend this book.

I really, really enjoyed the Social Leap. The book makes a very interesting and persuasive case that much of what makes us uniquely human—our psychology, intelligence and what we find meaningful in our lives—can be traced to our evolutionary past, and especially to how our chimp-like ancestors made the transition from trees to the savannah six million years ago.Our ancestors were forced from the safety of trees on to the savannah in Africa, and this was very dangerous. There were larger, faster, stronger predators in the savannah and it was only because of several lucky accidents—including especially the fact that we learned to cooperate—that we came to dominate the savannah and, subsequently, every environment we moved into.There is a lot of nuance and luck in our history and it is all told well in the Social Leap. We stood upright (became bipedal) and freed our hands to throw stones, make tools, and dominate larger creatures; we discovered fire which enabled us to release the nutrients in food and grow our brains; we learned how to divide labor and specialize. The book describes all of this and much more in way that is readable, interesting and thought-provoking. Psychology studies are described clearly and simply—something I haven’t found all that often in books of this type.The Social Leap also explains much of our current psychology. Why we ruminate endlessly about other people and social situations, for example, and why we aren’t as individuals terribly innovative (except in social situations). The last few chapters discuss what we can learn from evolutionary insights to improve our happiness and life satisfaction. And while I wasn’t persuaded by everything that is written about happiness, I do believe that though evolutionary insights may not be enough by themselves to inform a happy and productive life, they must be taken account of or we risk kidding ourselves about what will make us truly happy.There are many extremely interesting studies, theories and research described in the book. Some of my favorites:• We evolved to be upright and bipedal, which also enable us to throw stones. If you practice throwing stones, and especially if you throw stones in groups, you can be deadly, even against much stronger and larger animals.• Our intelligence and complexity of thought came about not to solve natural problems like hunting prey, but to navigate the far more complicated and dynamic situations that result interactions with other humans. Are others freeloading, are they plotting against me, is my mate cheating, etc. Social dynamics are extremely complicated, rapidly changing, and it is only by developing very sophisticated thinking that we could cope with this challenge.• The white around our pupils is evidence that we evolved so that others can tell what we are looking at. This helps drive cooperation, and surprisingly, is not true, for example, of chimpanzees.• Much of what we do to become good at things—like sports or chess or whatever—is motivated by our need to more sexually attractive than rivals.• We deceive ourselves in many ways, such as how attractive we are. This enables us to deceive others.• Leaders are more likely to become domineering, greedy, immoral and exploitative when resources can be monopolized.There is much, much more that I found deeply fascinating. And it is all clearly explained. This book gave me many new perspectives on my behavior and thinking patterns, and is one of the best I have read in a long time.

I just bought this book less than an hour ago (updated: I have now had the book for 24 hours). But I'm already running into problems. As an avid follower of anything that makes us human, I know I will enjoy this book even despite the faults. Hippel is charming and very knowledgeable. He focuses on aspects of human evolution that other scholars ignore. The writing is engaging and crisp. But there are some scientifically painful moments and I will highlight them as I read. So, this review will be updated as I move forward.The first real ouch comes right in the preface. It is there where Hippel is building his central ideas. But he does so in a fashion that strikes this reader as deceitful. In a section about the evolutionary roots of sharing and cooperation, Hippel talks about how chimps differ from humans in that they really have no rules at all when it comes to food sharing. He writes: "chimps who only watch the hunt are just as likely to end up with a monkey snack as chimps who join the hunting party. Their fellow chimps make little or no distinction between slackers and helpers. In sharp contrast, even children as young as four are attentive to who helps and who doesn’t." What!?!?? Everything I had ever read suggests the precise opposite. Nevertheless, I spent a half hour trying to find the evidence Hippel used to support this argument. Nothing to be found and his references aren't listed. I did, however, find considerable evidence to suggest that chimps do share food based on social networks and rules – quite the opposite of Hippel's conclusion. In chimps food sharing is based off of grooming relationships, barter, harassment, fear etc. Justice does matter. And it matters even in capuchins (as shown in a paper he does cite in his book). Yet, despite the deep academic consensus on this point, Hippel confidently cherry picks data (that I couldn't find) and states his claim in a way that sounds like it is a universally agreed upon conclusion. As such Hippel would either need to refute the other claims or at the least acknowledge they exist.Early into chapter one, Hippel is at it again. He writes about moments of his youth, how he and his friends would protect himself from hoards of dogs by throwing rocks. This is a fun observation and likely a human universal. But Hippel adds personal nuance to this story. And h confidently leads the reader into his theoretical web with an anecdote that strikes me as false. Hippel mentions that when he was in a group or even just with his brother they would (by instinct?) defend themselves by hurling rocks at groups of attacking stray dogs, but as soon as Hippel was alone he would respond (again by instinct?) in a different fashion – running to the nearest tree and climbing up before the dogs could reach him. Recall that the title of the book is the "Social Leap" so Hippel needs to make clear distinctions between a lone human and a social human. And so he does this hear. But wow. This is not science. Nor is it even likely true. Like Hippel I've been in numerous scary situations with packs of dogs (once I was in Chile facing a pack of fifty dogs running at me, fortunately they continued to run right by me) and the last thing I have ever thought when I have seen dogs running at me is to turn and run for a tree. Dogs are so fast. The last thing I've ever thought in those situations is to turn my back and run. Running away leads dogs to get even more aggressive. And even when alone, facing many packs of dogs (as I did once late at night in Holland) like Hippel, I have merely pretended to reach down for a rock and the dogs turn in their tracks - precisely as Hippel describes. So, while its an interesting observation that Hippel makes, it feels entirely contrived, and certainly is based on nothing more than personal anecdote – not quite the data one requires for scientific inquiry. At this stage in the book we need science and statistics not invention. Show us a study which shows that little boys run for the trees when they are alone and then stand their ground when they are in pairs. Otherwise risk alienating the reader.Moving forward we continue to run into more striking problems. Hippel pushes forward with his somewhat fishy notions of group selection – a topic that is not well supported by academics. And he does this using bogus data. On page 31 he writes about humans having evolved the sclera (the whites of our eyes) and how chimps don’t have them. This is just patently false. And I’ve posted a still from the recent documentary “Rise of the Warrior Apes” showing the chimp Pincer with eye whites precisely as they exist in humans. Worse, Hippel reaches far outside the evidence and claims that the sclera evolved for reasons of group selection. While this is an interesting guess, there is no evidence to back this up. And so once again he uses false information and then bundles that up in conjecture. Worse, this is further used to bolster his suspect ideas of group selection.That said, I do agree with some of Hippel's stronger points. I really enjoy how he underlines the fatalistic (not deterministic) nature of many aspects of human evolution. He avoids the cliches of "proto-humans climbed downed the trees and took over the land." Instead he rightfully notes that proto-humans were likely victims of many disasters. And so instead of us leaving the trees the trees left us. And he investigates the geological history to build this argument. This work is very satisfying. Further, he claims that cooperation is one of the most powerful innovations of humanity – the Social Leap. It is just unfortunate that he appears to be building the evolution of cooperation on conjecture and perhaps even a fair amount of weed smoke.On page 28, he takes a deep dive into the work of Barbara Isaac who suggested in a paper from 1987 that stone throwing played a much more significant role in human evolution than scholars have noted. I suspect Isaac is right about this. But Isaac's writing is much more cautious. She is quick to point out how little data there is. And when she cites the work of historians she is careful to note the problems with the citations. Hippel grabs from her paper readily, using many of her citations, but leaves out her caution. This is dangerous. Because as Hippel suggests in his dog story, stone throwing appears ideally suited for defense, but Hippel goes forward to suggest that it is a powerful method for hunting as well. But the evidence for stone use in hunting is scant. And personally it just feels wrong. Even a great major league pitcher like Nolan Ryan or Roger Clemens would likely find hunting difficult by throwing stones.I reserve my red highlighter pen for suspect writing. I use blue for great stuff. I use yellow for interesting. And again, while Hippel delivers a fun book, where I have used both the blue and the yellow often, there is just far too much red to recommend this book highly.That said, I am still very excited to continue reading and digging deeper into this book. He is a fun thinker and I have enjoyed his focus on Australopithecus and the transition to the savannah. This is very fresh stuff.As such, I will continue adding to this review....stay tuned.

This was an amazing book. Professor Hippel brilliantly explains why we are how we are. It helped me understand my self better as a human being.More folks should read this!

An interesting perspective on what makes us human and how our psychology today was shaped by our earliest ancestors. A good read for anyone wanting to learn more about evolutionary psychology and discover the evolutionary basis for happiness in our modern lives.

Contains lots of interesting facts about the history of humans that I didn't know about. Also provides insight into the way we evolved socially. Books is a perfect length, not too long not too short.
