Haley Sweetland Edwards is a correspondent at Time. Previously, she was an editor at the Washington Monthly, where she wrote about policy and regulation. From 2009 to 2012, she lived and worked in the Middle East and the former Soviet Union, where she wrote for The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, and The New Republic, among other publications. A masterpiece of a subject unknown to most. Ms. Edwards could have written this in a dry, academic style. But instead, after, as they say in the movies, an "establishing shot", (in this case a scene setting introduction,) the story unfolds in a suspenseful manner. The reporting, writing, research and documentation are first class,AAAA at the top. This girl is headed for the big leagues or maybe she is there already?

Anyone thinking of having an opinion on the TPP or NAFTA should read and re-read this book, masterfully written by Haley Sweetland Edwards who has a knack for placing an obscure topic into human context. Edwards tells fascinating stories about the people who shape global trade, illustrating the many ways Investor-State Dispute Settlement clauses reshape the balance of power worldwide.Lest anyone think this is just a book for policy obsessives, anyone with an appreciation for great writing will come away smiling. Edwards writes with wit and manages to present the material without bludgeoning the reader with opinion. A close reader will find clever turns of phrase and even a feeling of suspense. Great journalism lives!In "Shadow Courts," Edwards makes global trade policy riveting. Her cogent clear writing gives a clear understanding of a difficult topic. I strongly recommend it.

Learning the nuances and quiet power of these courts is more than a bit shocking, and definitely though provoking, but this is no conspiracy theory... it's a gut-check for policy wonks and everyday voters alike. Reading this reminded me of how important and challenging it is to be in informed citizen in our increasingly complex global community.

This is a fascinating topic, and one which I didn't even know existed prior to reading this book. I found the writing to be clear & journalistic in style, and it made for an easy read. My only complaint is that the book is too short--I'd really like to learn more about these international tribunals. What's their current status--it seems that they have been challenged in many countries?

Trade is the flash issue of the 2016 election and no book better explains the perils of the trade deals pending before congress than Edwards' "Shadow Courts." Reading about trade issues, particularly ISDS, is usually about as interesting as watching paint dry but Edwards weaves fascinating anecdotes with impressive data to create the most digestible book on trade ever. High recommend!!!

Goddess Athena's story begins with Zeus' first wife, Metis. When Zeus hears the prophecy that his offspring with Metis will one day overthrow him, he decides to destroy Metis. Unfortunately, his plans backfire and Athena is born anyway, springing from his head, fully-formed and as an adult woman. Athena will become the Goddess of Wisdom and also the Goddess of War, fighting alongside her friend, Nike. I know, right? I'm in total book nerd nirvana! One of the major perks is that I can easily take books out and see what's new in the world of books. This book was sitting on the "New Fiction" shelves and I noticed it right away as I was waiting for my first training shift so I picked it up and I was very happy with this quick selection.This was a very impressive debut novel that kept my attention right from the beginning. There was something utterly riveting about this book. It was paced perfectly and had many twists and turns, many of which I didn't see coming. All in all, a great read.Going into this book I was assuming that it would be a suspenseful read -- and it was. But it was so much more. It was a mystery and suspense plus a slight nod to the supernatural. I also appreciated that the author took the time to delve into the world of depression, loss, and obsession and how quickly she got me immersed into Ruby's life.There were some slight drawbacks though. While I'm an avid reader even I wasn't able to 'get' all of the literary references (and there were quite a few). Not fully understanding the references didn't hinder me from keeping up with the plot but I also don't like that niggling feeling of not quite getting something.Also, the ending was not predictable per se but everything seemed to work out a little too perfectly for the antagonist's evil plans with some coincidences that perhaps were a little far-fetched. But it's fiction, right? Plus, I have to admit that I enjoyed connecting the dots with the early parts of the story as we neared the end of the suspense.There were several twists that I didn't see coming and a couple that I did but overall I really enjoyed this page turner. This was a very impressive debut novel that I thoroughly enjoyed because it engaged me and took me along a very different road than I was expecting. I eagerly look forward to reading more from this author.My Rating: 4/5 stars

This book is so unbelievably bad. Now that I’ve skimmed through the final idiotic pages, I want my money back. Unfortunately, I read the stupid thing so I can’t return it. I was a rubbernecker at a train wreck.The novel morphs, about midway, from a 3-star read into a wtf? So, let’s start with the first half. The story would have been okay if it had stayed its course. Though the MC, Ruby, veers toward insufferable, I accepted her moping and inaction because I was led to believe she would move through her depression and confront whatever terrible thing had happened to her. I thought that was the point of the story -- a young literary student struggles with mental health issues like the writers she admires, Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. But no, that's not the point, as it turns out.Like I mentioned, the novel has an abrupt personality shift. A little over half way, it suddenly decides to be a Lifetime movie. All kinds of whack jobs come out of the woodwork and the plot gets all twisty and a bunch of blondes are suddenly trying to commit suicide or murder. Just completely ridiculous. It not only feels like a whole different story, but a whole different writer.Honestly, it was like the writer got the manuscript snatched away by a marketing team who tried to turn it into Snakes On A Plane, and, naturally failed. Sorry, but you can’t have Virginia Woolf and Syliva Plath as side characters in Lifetime movie. So I can’t help wondering: What the bleep happened here?

I would prefer to give this book 3 1/2 stars. Somewhere between good and really good. I purchased a copy of "The Butterfly Sisters" on Amazon after seeing it advertised on Goodreads. It's an easy book to read. I liked the author's writing style and the story was well-paced (until the end). I also liked the themes of women's literature, creativity, suicide, madness, New Orleans, ghosts, and the bittersweet angst of college romances. It even reminded me a bit at the beginning of "The Bell Jar," a novel that I'm fairly sure the author hoped to invoke.However, as other reviewers have noted, there were elements of the story that seemed far-fetched. And the ending was so convoluted and such a disappointment that it spoiled a novel that otherwise had the makings of an excellent read.About two-thirds of the way through this book, when Ruby meets and attends a lecture of Professor Barnard's, I thought to myself, "Wow, this is really good - a well-written novel of shared female empowerment." And although that theme wasn't completely shattered by the ending, the majority of it was.I found this novel frustrating because it started so well, got even better, and then fell off a ledge. It's hard not to wonder if some, if not all of the author's friends and editors who read through the manuscript didn't suggest a different ending that would be just as effective, but not so nearly convoluted and far-fetched.All in all, I hope Amy Gail Hansen continues to write. She shows a lot of promise and with more experience and an excellent editor, Hansen just might be able to create a novel that is an A+, rather than a B-.

As a person who has run afoul of these activists because of my refusal to cooperate with plans they had for my skills, and who has since been trying to make sense of their motives and behaviour, this book provides the most comprehensive and insightful explanation. Their framework of the three cultures is extremely useful here and jives so well with what I have seen and experienced. Here in Montreal, I have seen, from the point of observation of a central character (as their Trojan Horse), how these activists – very skilful populist demagogues – have managed to move this activism out from the campus and directly into the community through the use of social media. This has been going on since around 1990 and, by now, reaches an incredibly large audience in the city, especially among students from the city’s four universities – obviously their main target. This is an alarming turn of events in my opinion. Politically, I am left of centre and I am profoundly disturbed by the degree to which the mainstream left here in Montreal has been so easily seduced by the extreme left. They very much need to read this book. Thank you so much to both authors for providing readers with such clarity on this new social environment.

This book is solid but uninspiring. If you want to know the issues, the book is good. For some deep analysis of the issues, the book is quite weak. Why has the left in the US turned to identity politics and left-fascism? What is wrong with the strategy of shaming members of privileged groups and rejecting free speech and civil discourse? No answers here.I have nothing but systematic contempt for this new strategy on the Left. As a young member of the Left I fought against the Vietnam war, against racial and sexual discrimination, and for tolerance of diversity. We won LOTS of battles. The new authoritarian Left thinks it can move forward by shaming privileged groups into relinquishing their achieved positions. What a sick joke! The authoritarian Left is too pathetic for words.I am a scientist and an intellectual. I am proud of the contributions my generation of progressives made towards an emancipatory ethic and vision. The current authoritarian Left is completely intellectually bankrupt. There is not a single book or article that has any intellectual cogency. Just a bunch of dirty, racist bigots huddling together for warmth.What has brought this situation about? Frankly, I am still searching for answers.

Someone had to say it. This is part of a growing literature that is deconstructing the extreme left that has essentially taken over much of higher education. I'd say it was a painful but necessary read for me, having gone to graduate school in my 60's and having been on the left for about half of my life.

This book did something in every chapter without fail--it made me stop reading, look up, and go, "So *thaaaat's* what that's called!" The authors have absolutely nailed what's going on in our culture and given a huge range of today's societal ills accurate, thoughtful, nuanced-but-still-clear-and-direct language. Reading this book, I understood why so many things that seem to start in a good place--a helpful, compassionate place--still give me a bit of a queasy feeling and fear of how it's all going to turn out. Our culture is changing in undeniable ways. Things that would have made our parents and grandparents blush with shame are now the first line of defense for today's young adults. Why? Ordinary struggles of life are now regarded as life-or-death traumas from which people old enough to vote, enlist, or marry require institutional protection. The authors are both college professors, but they write in exactly the way all college professors should--for a thoughtful audience that can handle their ideas but doesn't necessarily have their academic vocabulary. I highly recommend this book.

This book is written well, seemingly more for an academic audience, but is still a very thorough and in-depth review of much of the issue we face on college campuses. Should be read by all!

If you are looking for a history of the company and its rise to the forefront of Wall Street titans, this is the book. The authors had incredible access such as two years of interviews with Schwarzman himself. They exhaustively go through each deal, the personalities behind them, the infighting and the external negotiations that allowed Blackstone to separate itself from the rest of the pack. Considering the privileged access, I thought the authors criticized the firm and its leaders when appropriate.If you are looking for more of a general finance book or a thrilling read, this is not that book. Barbarians at the Gate is better for pure entertainment. Do not expect the same sort of roller coaster here but do expect a well written and comprehensive summary of the good and the bad within the company.I also do like the authors' strong defense of private equity in general. They do write for a publication called The Deal so they are biased but they provide coherent and important arguments showing the importance of strong investor control in the functioning of well managed companies.

Very readable book. I went thru the 300+ pages in five days of on and off reading, and it was very interesting to finally understand the mechanics behind some of the biggest LBO's ever. Also I learned a couple of financial things I did not know, and after saw the movie Wall Street with a different mindset, which made me understand it better. Having said that, the book was written in 2011-2012 and so it's dated. A new edition with the results of the years 2011-2014 would be interesting to analyze the results of the re-structuring these companies had since then.

This is one of the best-written books on the subject of finance (to use the term in its broadest sense) I have read. What makes this particular book a how-to on this sort of literature is simply this: everything in it is what as a reader I would like to know, and nothing else. The authors review the history of Blackstone through the eyes of the people who have made Blackstone what it is today. It paints a clear picture of the main characters, their background and motivations; competitive and regulatory landscape; the structures (sometimes fairly complex but never beyond comprehension) of the actual deals involved, as well as profits and losses. However, the story always moves at a very brisk pace, never getting bogged down in any more detail than strictly necessary. That, in my opinion, is the most impressive achievement of this book. I read the whole thing in three days because I simply couldn't put it down. Reading through the notes, I found out that it took three laborious years to write it. I came away feeling a personal sense of gratitude to the authors for their work and regret that there was no more pages left to read.

Riveting? No, some parts were tedious to an extreme. Readable? Yes, with fairly tight explanations of finance and techniques from the '80s to the present. My guess is the book should be a "must read" as an education process for the business. It will remain on my Kindle as a reference. It's a history lesson and a primer at the same time.

I am a huge fan of biographies on successful and interesting people. I thought this book on Steve Schwarzman would be one of those. I wasn't entirely wrong. The book does chronological many of the Blackstone deals and it is interesting to see how the company came into fruition but the details and interesting facts about Steve Schwarzman are simply not there. I'm not sure what reader would find this book too interesting but I am an avid reader of business books and I think this book was just ok. Thanks

This book is a fairly quick read that lays out the history of Blackstone and the origins of some of its spinoffs. Overall, I would say this book reads like a reporter's account of the facts of the situation. It does not have anywhere near the level of detail of an insider or someone that had intimate knowledge of the doings or workings of this firm. For that reason, i was a little disappointed with this book as it did not describe what has made this one of the great players in finance. Sure there is discussion of the leadership's obsessions with this or that and some color of the roles some of the senior players had in the direction of the firm, but I struggled to identify what was the critical element, other than the leadership's, or more specifically Schwartzman's, relentless pursuit of success that made this a great firm. It certainly appeared the author relied a great deal or was heavily influenced by Schwartzman's account and as such I was left wanting and believing as with so many other books written by reporters, not industry experts or insiders, that they lacked an understanding of the true dynamic within the organization. In the author's defense, there is a fair amount of criticism of the firm throughout the book. The most critical part revealed the culture of the firm which is described as a revolving door where talented individuals are not nurtured, but sooner or later get frustrated and trade away. Not too unusual on Wall Street, but the author describes this turnover as far more excessive than normal and given some of the talent that left, it is pretty hard to believe Blackstone has achieved all it has given some of these departures. Its a quick read that would be helpful to understand the firm if you are doing business with them, but this certainly would not qualify as a definitive account of this remarkable firm.

Very clever. I had the common belief these take over merchants we greedy SOB's (and some of the CEO's are still pretty disgusting in my book) But the author brings out some surprising facts and figures that made me truly re-evaluate my convictions. Excellent material. It will live on my shelf for a long time and be read again.

I am a fan of Sarah Knight’s anti-guru insights and can relate much to the material, especially as a fellow child-free, recovering perfectionist. An enjoyable read as usual, but I had a hard time connecting with this one, as opposed to her first two books which I LOVED. This one had a more of an approach insinuating arrogance is bliss, and perhaps I have somewhat of a personality clash here (not entirely) but I did have some valuable takeways.

It was fun and juicy during the first chapter and by the 2 and 3 chapters a pattern was emerging. No real substance or answers. Basically the same message repeated for 6 cd's "Be yourself and/but don't be rude about it! She does have an easy to listen to voice and cute personality so I listened longer than I wanted to.

I love Sarah Knight and within the last week have read her first two books and I am already 60 pages into You Do You, as an anti-guru She speaks her mind and I can relate to everything she shares. As a recovering perfectionist its refreshing to hear someone say all of the things I have thought, I have been practicing many of her ways before I knew she existed so its comforting to know someone else out there thinks like i do... and enjoys cursing as much as I do .

She really has helped me with my confidence and general attitude. I’m also take to heart to be less judgmental of others and accepting that we are all going to like and want different things and that’s OK. Now if I could just work on my constant body dissatisfaction, I’d love to see Sarah write a book delving into how to not care about society’s view of body image. This is one I’ve struggled with since my teens.

I love this book! It definitely makes me feel like I'm not the only one who is an antisocial social :)

Save your money (but more importantly your precious time) and just read the title of this book and follow the extremely important advice of being yourself. "Just be yourself" or "you do you," or any other variation on that theme is truly sound advice for almost anyone. This narrator's (author's) voice and attitude are difficult to endure. Maybe if you read the book yourself instead of having it read to you by the smarmy author you could pretend you're hearing it in the voice of James Earl Jones or Judy Dench and it would become a 5-star read all of the sudden. Also, you would need to be drunk.

I originally got You Do You because it was on sale and I thought I had read her first book, The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F***. (It turns out that I had actually read Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*, which is also good, but now I'm going to have to read Sarah Knight's book, since I enjoyed this one so much.)This book was hilarious. If you're offended by foul language, you might want to skip it. I certainly wouldn't read it aloud at work, but I found it hilarious. She also gave a lot of really good, useful advice, while making it fun to read. I learned a lot and was reminded of things that I already knew. She's vulnerable and shares her experiences, which made me feel heard and less alone.I highly recommend it. It's a fun read. I'll let you know how her other books are when I get to them, too.

Hilarious and well written. More people need to read this. I like the philosophy, since so many people are in each other's business. You do you!
